Nanny Zhou suggests to Lady Song that they should intimidate Gu Jinzhao to establish who truly holds power in the household. However, Gu Jinzhao turns the tables by arriving under the pretext of learning how to brew medicine, noting that Lady Song supposedly performs this task for Lady Han every day. Forced into a corner by her own lies, Lady Song tries to brew the medicine but nearly starts a fire due to her incompetence.
Gu Dezhao arrives to find the chaotic scene, and Gu Jinzhao immediately exposes the deception, explaining that Nanny Zhou lied about Lady Song’s daily contributions, which resulted in the spilled medicine and the dangerous fire. Gu Jinzhao then brings up a painful memory from nine years ago. She reveals that she traveled alone to the capital at the age of six to see her parents, only to be refused entry and chased away.
She describes how Nanny Zhou pushed her and pinched her neck until it was swollen while Gu Dezhao watched. Fearing that his own role in abandoning his daughter would be exposed to Lady Han, Gu Dezhao feigns outrage at the "wicked servant" for defying her superiors. Although he initially orders ten strokes for Nanny Zhou, Gu Jinzhao insists on twenty, forcing him to play along with her performance to appease her grievance.
After the punishment, Gu Jinzhao tells her maid that her father only punished Nanny Zhou to silence her and protect his own reputation, as he was the one who originally ordered her exclusion from the manor. Meanwhile, Lady Song has Gu Lan apply ointment to Nanny Zhou’s wounds. Gu Lan criticizes them for their constant lying, but Nanny Zhou warns her that as a daughter of a concubine, her comfortable life depends on keeping the legitimate daughter, Gu Jinzhao, away.
She describes Gu Jinzhao as cunning and ruthless, urging Gu Lan to fight for her status before it is too late. At the Bureau of Justice, Chen Yanyun visits the imprisoned Nie Fengming. While Nie Fengming puts on a show of defiance for any onlookers, it is revealed through their history that they are secret allies. Chen reveals that the Emperor has officially launched the land equalization policy nationwide, starting with a trial in Tongzhou.
Despite their shared goal to save the dynasty, the Emperor sentences Nie Fengming to be flogged to death for his public insolence against the late emperor. Chen Yanyun watches in silence as his friend is led to his execution, hiding their connection to ensure their long-term plans do not fail. Chen Yanyun later meets with his allies to discuss the next steps.
They acknowledge that while Nie Fengming’s disruption helped launch the policy, the main obstacle remains Grand Secretary Fan Chuan. Chen Yanyun proposes targeting Fan Chuan’s right-hand man, the Vice Minister of Revenue, Lin Xianzhong. He plans to use the upcoming birthday banquet for Lin’s wife to execute his scheme.
During the banquet, Gu Jinzhao overhears guests whispering about the dangerous situation in Tongzhou, mentioning that her grandmother's home has been set on fire and that the elderly woman must test her food with silver needles to avoid poisoning. Worried, Gu Jinzhao follows Chen Yanyun to a secluded backyard. She witnesses him blackmailing Lin Xianzhong, revealing that the Bureau of Justice has captured Su Yuanhang, who confessed to purchasing 30,000 mu of land for Lin at a suspiciously low price.
Chen Yanyun also reveals he knows Lin has been secretly investigating Fan Chuan’s family for leverage. Chen Yanyun notices Gu Jinzhao and questions her presence. When she begs for her grandmother’s safety, Chen Yanyun tells her that the Tongzhou trial is the first step of the New Tax Edict and must succeed at any cost.
He emphasizes that the Ji family must show their resolve through sacrifice, and Gu Jinzhao realizes she is being used as a symbol of that commitment. Ye Xian interrupts the conversation, warning Gu Jinzhao to stay away from Chen Yanyun. He points out that since the Gu family belongs to Fan Chuan’s faction, they could be ruined if Lin Xianzhong falls. Gu Jinzhao decides to protect her father from being implicated.
During the banquet, she deliberately undermines and humiliates Gu Dezhao in front of the other guests, mocking his reliance on a concubine to manage his household and his extravagant spending on bird’s nests for his mistress. Ashamed and angry, Gu Dezhao leaves the banquet early, unknowingly avoiding the Bureau of Justice's raid. Later, Chen Yanyun captures Lin’s butler, Lin Wu, ensuring he has caught the Vice Minister red-handed. Back at the manor, Gu Jinzhao writes a letter to her grandmother.
Knowing Chen Yanyun will intercept it, she expresses her wariness of him and asks about any events involving him during her past coming-of-age ceremony. Chen Yanyun reads the letter and realizes she is signaling her cooperation and silence. Meanwhile, Gu Dezhao, relieved to have escaped the political fallout, instructs Lady Song to find a matchmaker for Gu Jinzhao. He intends to marry her to the son of Liu Siyu, believing Liu is destined to replace the fallen Lin Xianzhong as the next Vice Minister of Revenue.
