Gu Jinzhao overheard her father, Gu Dezhao, discussing her upcoming coming-of-age ceremony with her cousin, Ji Yao. Gu Dezhao heartlessly refused to contribute a single copper to the event, suggesting that since the Ji family enjoyed grand displays, they should also prepare the gifts for him to present to his own daughter. Overwhelmed by his cold calculation, Gu Jinzhao realized that parental love was a matter of fortune that could not be forced.

Encountering a man with a lantern outside, she snatched it and used the flame to incinerate the gift list and preparations her grandmother had made, vowing to never again expect love from those who did not offer it. Later, Madam Ji discussed the importance of the ceremony with Gu Jinzhao, explaining it was a vital rite for her future marriage prospects.

When Gu Jinzhao and Ji Yao began their usual bickering, Madam Ji jokingly suggested they should simply marry each other. Startled by the prospect, Gu Jinzhao quickly relented and agreed to the ceremony. As they left, they encountered the enigmatic Chen Yanyun. Ji Yao hurried Gu Jinzhao away, warning her that Chen was a dangerous man.

He explained that Chen was pushing a controversial New Tax Edict and had sought refuge at the Ji estate under the guise of illness to escape the wrath of powerful nobles who might hire assassins to stop him. Gu Jinzhao’s mood darkened further when she overheard servants gossiping about how her parents refused to host her ceremony, leaving her to rely on her maternal grandmother’s charity. Seeking solitude, she took a boat to the back hill, reflecting on her past.

When she was only a month old, a fortune teller claimed she would hinder her father’s career, leading Gu Dezhao to cast her away. Years later, when she tried to return home, he had barred her from the gates. Meanwhile, in the same secluded area, the heir of Prince Ruichang confronted Chen Yanyun, demanding he sign a petition to abolish the New Tax Edict.

When Chen refused, he revealed he had brought hidden soldiers and had the heir killed on the spot. Gu Jinzhao, who had fallen asleep on her boat after drinking, woke up just in time to witness the killing. Terrified, she fell into the water. When she regained consciousness at the Ji residence, Ji Yao informed her that Chen Xuanqing had saved her. Madam Ji thanked the young man, but after he left, Ji Yao voiced his suspicions.

He noted that Chen Xuanqing’s clothes were perfectly dry when he supposedly pulled her from the lake, suggesting the true savior was likely Chen Yanyun. Realizing Chen Yanyun must have used his nephew as a cover, Madam Ji ordered that they maintain the lie to avoid political complications, as long as Gu Jinzhao claimed she saw nothing.

Chen Yanyun eventually instructed his nephew, Chen Xuanqing, to deliver imperial medicinal wine to Gu Jinzhao to help her recover, reminding him to stay silent about the rescue. When Chen Xuanqing delivered the gift, Gu Jinzhao presented him with an ancient Duan inkstone and Xuanyuan ink as a token of gratitude. However, her suspicions remained. When she later encountered Chen Yanyun, his silhouette seemed hauntingly familiar.

He mentioned the incident with the lantern from the night she burned the gift list, confirming he was the man she had met at the door. Gu Jinzhao began to wonder if her memories of the back hill were real or merely shadows of a drunken night. Behind the scenes, Madam Ji revealed she was guarding 114 boxes of secret government files salvaged from the water, protected by mutes.

She assured Chen Yanyun that Gu Jinzhao was a carefree girl who hadn't seen anything. Chen Yanyun then informed her that his mother would act as the lead officiant for Gu Jinzhao’s ceremony—a great social honor—but insisted that once the rite was finished, Gu Jinzhao must be sent to the capital. Madam Ji, though hesitant, was forced to agree. On the day of the ceremony, Gu Jinzhao’s cousin arrived in Tongzhou accompanied by Ye Xian, the heir of Marquis Changxing.

During the event, an imperial decree arrived, promoting Chen Yanyun to Director of the Crown Prince's Household and Chief Revenue Censor. As guests flocked to congratulate him, Gu Jinzhao realized that Chen Yanyun had calculated this timing perfectly, using her debut ceremony as a stage for his own political triumph. The atmosphere grew tense when Gu Dezhao attempted to reclaim his daughter to take her back to the capital.

Madam Ji saw through him, knowing he only wanted to avoid being impeached for "abandoning his daughter" during the ongoing review of official conduct. To defy him, Gu Jinzhao intentionally approached Chen Yanyun and provoked her father, knowing he would never dare to discipline her in the presence of such a high-ranking official. Defeated, her father was forced to back down.

Before the day ended, Chen Yanyun sent word through a maid that he and Gu Jinzhao were now "even" for his intrusion on her ceremony. As she left, Gu Jinzhao ignored a greeting from Ye Xian, while Chen Yanyun dismissed the heir as a mere traveler.
