When Chen Yanyun and his men rushed over, they found that all of Ye Xian's followers had died, and Ye Xian himself had been pierced through the chest with a spear. Recalling his past memories with Ye Xian, Chen Yanyun brought his body back. Gu Jinzhao, who was waiting anxiously, felt a wave of relief upon seeing Chen Yanyun's return, only to be utterly shocked and devastated to find Ye Xian's lifeless body being carried back.
Chen Yanyun had sustained injuries, but after an examination, the doctor assured them it was not serious. While Ji Yao kept watch over Ye Xian, he saw Gu Jinzhao approach and asked about Chen Yanyun's condition. Gu Jinzhao replied that Chen Yanyun had regained consciousness and was doing fine. Ji Yao then left to give her some time alone with Ye Xian.
Weeping by his side, Gu Jinzhao noticed something in Ye Xian's bosom and pulled out several letters he had written. Gu Jinzhao opened the letter Ye Xian had addressed to her. In it, Ye Xian wrote that if she was reading this, it meant he was already gone. He expressed how happy he had been during his time there, revealing that a doctor had previously told him he only had three years left to live.
To die in battle was a worthy end with no regrets. He noted that by dying now, she would remember him forever, giving him one final victory over "Chen San" (Chen Yanyun). He also asked her to look after his beloved cat. Meanwhile, the reinforcements arrived, filled with regret that they had not come sooner to save the young lord. The reinforcements asked Chen Yanyun about their next steps, suggesting he return to the capital.
However, Chen Yanyun pointed out that if he returned alive, the Prime Minister's collusion with the Chunyuan Cult would be exposed prematurely, throwing the imperial court into chaos and jeopardizing any hope of sending reinforcements. He concluded that the only viable option was to fake his own death. Gu Jinzhao and the others returned to the city gate with a coffin.
Old Lady Chen and her family were already waiting there, with Second Lady Chen explaining that her mother insisted on coming despite everyone's attempts to stop her. Overcome with grief at the sight of the coffin, Old Lady Chen broke down. Gu Jinzhao urged them to return to the residence first, as the city gate was not a suitable place to talk.
Just then, the Prime Minister arrived with a group of officials, declaring that Chen Yanyun had died for his country and demanding his body be sent to Xuanmiao Temple so officials could pay their respects. Gu Jinzhao refused. Drawing a dagger and pointing it at herself, she warned the Prime Minister not to stop her from taking Chen Yanyun back to the residence.
She declared that with Chen Yanyun gone, she, as his widow, had nothing left to fear, including death. Reluctantly, the Prime Minister backed down. After they returned to the residence, Gu Lan and the others came to offer their comfort, and Xue Qinglan offered her condolences. Learning that the relatives from her ancestral home had not yet arrived, Gu Jinzhao sent someone to fetch them, insisting that Old Lady Gu and Fifth Aunt must come.
Gu Jinzhao then met with Old Lady Chen and revealed the truth that Chen Yanyun was still alive. Deeply moved, Old Lady Chen tearfully confessed her regrets, admitting she had pressured Chen Yanyun too much and apologized for failing him. Gu Jinzhao comforted her, suggesting she save these words to tell Chen Yanyun in person when he safely returned. Soon, Fifth Aunt arrived, confused as to why Gu Jinzhao had summoned her.
Gu Jinzhao met with her and delivered the tragic news of Ye Xian's death in battle. Fifth Aunt, who was actually Ye Xian's sister, was devastated by the news. Gu Jinzhao then presented the letters Ye Xian had left behind, including one written to his sister and another addressed to the Emperor.
