To escape her arranged marriage to the Liu family, Gu Jinchao presents Ye Xian with a plan that avoids involving the power of the Marquis’s residence. She gives him her "nominal talisman", explaining that she has been under the protection of Taoist Priest Qingxu since infancy. Years ago, a single word from this priest convinced her father, Gu Dezhao, to send her away to Tongzhou.
Knowing the priest is motivated by money, Jinchao believes she can bribe him to help her just as her father once did. Before Ye Xian departs, Jinchao notices his hand injuries and learns he was punished by Chen Yanyun for helping her out of the palace. Ye Xian promises to send updates through Li Xianhuai. As Ye Xian scales the wall to leave, he is spotted by Gu Lan.
Consumed by jealousy, Gu Lan rants to her maid, Zi Ling, noting that Ye Xian—newly appointed as the Crown Prince’s study companion—has visited Jinchao four or five times in just over a month, whereas Gu Lan only sees the young Marquis once a year during New Year celebrations.
Meanwhile, Chen Yanyun receives a set of valuable gifts from Jinchao: a jade carving of a carriage and a set of "Four Gentlemen" (plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum) jade paperweights—two green and two white. He perceives the carriage as a test regarding his previous surveillance of her, while the paperweights serve as a declaration of her innocence ("clear and white") and a subtle thank-you for releasing Ye Xian.
Chen Yanyun reflects that while Jinchao is exceptionally clever, she is ultimately a young girl living in constant fear. In the Xuanmiao Temple, Ye Xian uses the talisman to secure a deal with Taoist Priest Qingxu. Soon after, Gu Dezhao announces that the priest has found the horoscopes of Jinchao and Liu Xiancheng to be a terrible match, claiming Liu "clashes with his relatives."
To save face, Gu Dezhao tells the Liu family that Jinchao’s grandmother is simply too reluctant to let her marry so young. Jinchao seizes the moment to mention that someone has been spending money to ruin her reputation. This prompts Mother Zhao, a servant of Jinchao's mother (Lady Han), to reveal Liu Xiancheng’s depravity, exposing his numerous concubines and mistresses. The truth causes Lady Han to explode in anger at Song Myuhua (Song Myuhua), who had hidden the facts.
Although Lady Han orders Song Myuhua and Mother Zhou to be beaten and exiled to a farm, Song Myuhua successfully manipulates Gu Dezhao’s emotions. She reminds him that she was the daughter of a fourth-rank official who sacrificed her status and family to become his concubine. Gu Dezhao softens and cancels the exile.
Lady Han faints from the stress, and Song Myuhua follows up with a "bitter meat" tactic, returning the household management tablets and keys to Lady Han to make Gu Dezhao feel even more guilty for doubting her. Song Myuhua then urges Gu Lan to target Chen Xuanqing for marriage, believing the adopted scholar is a perfect match for a concubine's daughter.
The Chen family prepares for a celebration as Chen Xuanqing has become the "Jieyuan" (top scholar) and the Fourth Master, Chen Yanying, has also passed the exams. Chen Yanyun, wary of political scrutiny during his tax reforms, convinces his mother to turn the grand feast into a modest chrysanthemum-viewing party. However, the arrogant Fourth Master orders his servant, Yu Zhu, to invite all his failed classmates just to gloat.
When Yu Zhu tries to advise against such vanity, the Fourth Master beats him to death. An enraged Chen Yanyun confronts him, revealing he knows that the Fourth Master also murdered their younger brother, Xiao Wu, years ago out of jealousy. He gives Yanying a choice: withdraw from the imperial examinations permanently or be turned over to the authorities.
On the day of the party, the Crown Prince, feeling stifled in the palace, sneaks out with Ye Xian to the Chen residence. He adopts the alias "Wang Zhang," pretending to be Ye Xian’s cousin. Although Chen Yanyun immediately sees through the disguise, he is forced to play along to avoid a scene, assigning Chen Xuanqing to accompany them. During the festivities, the guests play a riddle game with high-stakes prizes.
Gu Jinchao offers a precious five-colored willow leaf vase, while Ye Xian shocks everyone by putting up a "Rumi" firearm. When Ye Xian playfully points the weapon at Chen Xuanqing, Jinchao quickly intervenes, reminding him that causing a scene would be an insult to the hostess, Old Madam Chen. Ye Xian backs down, though he continues to tease Jinchao about her fear of death. Observing from the shadows, Chen Yanyun orders extra security for the Prince.
To ensure Chen Xuanqing is not outshined during the game, Chen Yanyun sends over the same jade paperweights Jinchao gave him, realizing she had used the gift as an excuse to support the Chen family.
