Ji Ling presents four specific items to unravel the mystery of the fox demon murder. He explains that Yu Shengwei never truly loved Wei Qing and only married him due to the influence of a love talisman. To escape her stifling life in the mansion without being pursued by her family or the authorities, she planned to fake her death with the help of her trusted companion, Luo Wei.

Their elaborate scheme involved using shadow puppets to draw the household away while Luo Wei displayed a fox-embroidered cloth. To make the "fox demon" vanish before the witnesses' eyes, they used a massive kite. The silver threads of the embroidery were attached to the kite, and as it ascended, the threads were pulled back through the needle holes, causing the image to disappear.

Xiaowei had originally helped them to buy time for the escape, but human malice proved more dangerous than any demon. Luo Wei, consumed by greed and a desire to seize the Wei family fortune, betrayed Yu Shengwei. She used a unique weapon to mimic demonic wounds and killed her friend, framing the fox demon for the crime. Fingerprints found on a heated red candle at the scene linked her to the murder.

Before she died, Yu Shengwei took out a bag of chestnut cakes, realizing too late that the care she had received came from Xiaowei, as Luo Wei knew nothing about the cakes. When confronted, Luo Wei revealed a tattoo that resembled the moon mark and defended her actions by lamenting the struggles of the poor in the old town. She accused the Shilin Sect of only protecting the elite.

However, Wu Shiguang condemned her ingratitude, noting that Yu Shengwei was the one who had rescued her from that very misery. Following the revelation, Xiaowei handed over the gift register containing the death curse. As Wu Shiguang burned the document, the curse lifted, and the group's senses of smell and taste were restored. While Luo Wei was taken away by the authorities, Xiaowei attempted to use her demonic energy to revive Yu Shengwei, which only triggered the Never-Ending Curse.

Wu Wangyan and Lu Wuyi stepped in to protect her from the encroaching ice. Discussing the situation later, Wu Shiguang and Ji Ling reflected on Xiaowei's futile devotion. Yu Shengwei was no longer the Wang Sheng of the past and held no memory of her. Xiaowei had spent centuries searching for her benefactor, even enduring the agony of losing her tail and performing grueling manual tasks like making chestnut cakes by hand just to bring her joy.

Lu Wuyi observed that demons' tears are often seen as fakes meant to mimic humanity, while Wu Wangyan recalled their long history serving the Fox Queen and the goddess Nuwa as part of the Formless Moon Sect. To gain entry into the Shilin Sect, Wu Shiguang offered to help Ji Ling bring Xiaowei in as the culprit of the heart-ripping cases. Ji Ling returned Wu Shiguang's Cosmic Pouch, which contained his subordinate, a weasel demon named You Chi.

The little demon, whose name was derived from the first thing he ever stole—a ruler—was teased for his small ears but remained a loyal spy for his master. Xiaowei revealed that her recent actions were influenced by a butterfly demon named Yuan Wuhuo. He had promised her information on Wang Sheng's whereabouts in exchange for the nine-tailed power she had lent to the Dragon Deity and the secret to reversing the love talisman.

Using the Heavenly Sticks, a divine tool that grants knowledge at the cost of one's lifespan and power, Yuan Wuhuo had orchestrated the recent chaos in Luo'an. Outside, Wu Shiguang learned from Wu Wangyan that rumors were spreading about the Dragon Deity's power being the only cure for the love talisman's curse. Desperate citizens were swarming the Dragon Deity Temple, unaware that Ji Ling, the last dragon son known as Chi Wen, had lost his strength.

After other powerful entities like Wu Zhiqi and Han Ba reclaimed their energy from his ring, Ji Ling was left vulnerable, relying on the protection of the Shilin Sect while hiding from the demons that sought his life.
