The city of Luo'an is gripped by terror as a gruesome series of murders occurs every seven days. Each victim is found with their heart ripped out, leading to rumors of a malevolent demon. To ensure the safety of his upcoming wedding, Wei Qing, the head of the prominent Wei mansion, hires demon hunters from the prestigious Shilin Sect to guard his estate.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, a fox demon named Lu Wuyi arrives at the mansion, using her magic to bewitch the bride, Yu Shengwei, into accepting her as a long-lost cousin named Yu Wei. Meanwhile, the independent demon hunter Wu Shiguang and his companion, a low-ranking weasel demon named You Chi, stage a fake kidnapping at the Dragon Deity Temple.

By "rescuing" the bride, Wu Shiguang hopes to gain entry to the mansion to track a mysterious broken-tail fox he encountered previously. Although Wu Shiguang catches Wei Qing's attention, Lu Wuyi cleverly sabotages him. She publicly admires the hunter's handsome features and suggests he serve as the bride's inseparable protector, which sparks Wei Qing's jealousy. The master of the house promptly dismisses Wu Shiguang, but the hunter remains suspicious of the "cousin."

As the seven-day murder cycle approaches, Wu Shiguang sneaks back into the mansion, knocks out Wei Qing, and uses skin-painting magic to take the groom's place. Lu Wuyi witnesses this deception and alerts her sister, Wu Wangyan, the high priestess of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan. The sisters are in Luo'an to capture a renegade named Xiaowei, a broken-tail fox who stole the Dragon Deity’s power.

Realizing the groom is an impostor, Wu Wangyan decides to replace the bride to face him directly. On the wedding day, two official Shilin Sect hunters, Ji Ling and Li Jie, arrive. Lacking a proper wedding gift, they are barred from the ceremony and forced to scale the walls. While lurking on the roof, they observe the mansion's steward, Luo Wei, behaving suspiciously.

Inside the bridal chamber, Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan finally drop their disguises, and a fierce battle erupts between the spear-wielding hunter and the sword-wielding fox priestess. Ji Ling and Li Jie jump into the fray, leading to a chaotic four-way struggle in the courtyard. To create an opening for escape, Wu Wangyan takes Lu Wuyi hostage, though it is merely a ruse between the sisters.

Wu Shiguang uses his enchanted Buddhist beads and blood-red silk threads to bind Wu Wangyan. In the confusion, the soft-hearted Ji Ling is easily swayed by Lu Wuyi’s distressed act, but the stern Li Jie remains focused, pushing the fox girl toward Wu Shiguang. Their confrontation is interrupted by a blood-curdling scream. Rushing to a side room, the hunters find a guest named Li Mao dead, his heart missing, while his wife, Tao Xi, is found cowering in terror.

Li Mao’s hand grips a scrap of paper with the words "Weimiao Pavilion" written on it. Along the corridor, Ji Ling and Li Jie discover another body encased in frost. Though the ice magic resembles Wu Wangyan’s techniques, the fact that she was bound during the murder suggests another culprit is at work. Wu Shiguang spots a fox shadow and pursues it into a weaving workshop.

He catches the creature in a magical net, but a sudden burst of ice allows the broken-tail fox to escape into a loft. Inside the room, Wu Shiguang finds Yu Shengwei, the steward Luo Wei, and the cousin Liu Weixue already present.

You Chi provides background on the trio: the bride is a master of animal embroidery; the steward Luo Wei appeared suddenly to save the family from bankruptcy and is rumored to love Wei Qing; and Liu Weixue is a martial artist who fled a wedding and avoids the battlefield. With the fox sisters and the Shilin hunters also gathering in the loft, Wu Shiguang declares that the heart-stealing fox is hiding among them. Just as the tension reaches its peak, a strange noise echoes from a nearby box, drawing everyone's attention.
