Wu Wangyan and Lu Wuyi reveal to Wu Shiguang and his companions that they, too, were deceived by the fox demon, Xiaowei. Lu Wuyi explains that the "heart-ripping" deaths are actually a fatal backlash triggered when the person under the spell tears the love talisman themselves. Xiaowei exploited this secret to manipulate Wei Qing into destroying his own charm, causing his death.
The sisters further explain that the Ice Curse is actually the "Never-Ending Curse," the most severe punishment of the Formless Moon sect. Members of the sect use surnames based on forms of moonlight—such as Wu for mist, Lu for dew, and Bing for ice. Once a member betrays the sect, the moonlight transforms into their surname to hunt them forever. Since Xiaowei’s true surname is Bing, the Ice Curse pursues her; if caught, she would be shattered into frozen shards.
To survive, she must hide in the shadows during the full moon. While the group waits, Wu Wangyan reveals a "moon phase" mark on her arm, which she calls "Wangyue" (Full Moon). She explains that these marks are innate to the nine-tailed fox tribe and stay with them through every reincarnation. Xiaowei bears the "Kui" (Waning Moon) mark and, years ago, branded her human savior with the same mark so she could find him across his many lifetimes.
This explains why Weimiao Pavilion required guests to undress—it was a way for Xiaowei to search for this specific brand. Meanwhile, Ji Ling accompanies Lu Wuyi as she admires flowers. She explains that her moon phase is "Hui," representing the invisible new moon, which is why she bears no mark. Instead, her sister gave her a hollow Jade Jue to represent her hidden phase.
When Ji Ling wipes her hands, Lu Wuyi denies they have met before, though her racing heart betrays her. Ji Ling, however, clearly remembers her as the girl who always carried a rag doll. Their moment is interrupted by Li Jie, and Lu Wuyi hands over a note Xiaowei used to lure her to the dye workshop for investigation. As night falls, the group gathers for the "Spirit Purification and Guidance" ritual.
Wu Shiguang orders Yu Shengwei, Luo Wei, and Liu Weixue to stay in the courtyard until dawn. During the ritual, Wu Shiguang and Ji Ling discover a mark on the sole of Wei Qing’s foot that resembles the waning moon, though they keep the find quiet. The suspects soon begin to move under the sisters' watch.
Liu Weixue heads to the latrine with Wu Shiguang, while Yu Shengwei goes to her room for a cloak and Luo Wei goes to the dye workshop. Wu Shiguang becomes suspicious when Liu Weixue fakes a fall and complains about puddles in the corridor, even though Wu Wangyan observes that the floor is perfectly dry.
Simultaneously, Li Jie confronts Luo Wei in the workshop with a note that matches her handwriting, but she argues she only learned to write by copying Wei Qing’s scripts. Amidst the tension, word arrives that Yu Shengwei has been critically injured after her heart was attacked. As the truth comes to light, the group exposes Xiaowei, who has been posing as Liu Weixue all along.
They had pieced the clues together: the "frostbite" on his foot from the Ice Curse which he faked as a sprain, his uncharacteristic preference for sleeping on tussah silk, and a trick that proved he had lost his sense of smell—a side effect of Xiaowei severing her spiritual tail. A devastated Xiaowei denies hurting Yu Shengwei.
She reveals that she had initially mistaken an old scar on Wei Qing’s foot for the moon mark, realizing only too late that Yu Shengwei was the true reincarnation of her savior, Wang Sheng. To save Yu Shengwei from the Fox-Allure Spell's backlash, Xiaowei had tried to make Wei Qing fall for her friend Luo Wei so his feelings for his wife would vanish, thus neutralizing the curse.
However, Xiaowei claims she did not switch the final talisman that killed Wei Qing; instead, she accuses Luo Wei of stealing and switching it first. Ji Ling and Li Jie then arrive with four objects—including a bundle, chestnut cakes, and a shadow puppet—claiming these items hold the final secret to the murder case.
