Tianying and Tianci arrived at a pawnbroker, hoping to redeem a necklace. Tianying reminded the boss that they had agreed on an original price redemption if done within ten days, but he was now demanding a 3% daily interest. Tianci vouched for his sister's trustworthiness, but the boss insisted his public notice stated otherwise, denying any prior agreement for original price redemption.
He claimed he'd done them a favor by valuing the item highly for their emergency, and now they should pay up or he would sell the necklace after ten days to the highest bidder. Tianying revealed she didn't even have enough to cover the interest. Frustrated, Tianci remarked that Dongjiang was a difficult place, and without evidence, they were at a disadvantage. Their combined money was nowhere near enough, so they decided to leave and figure out another solution.
Shortly after they left, Luo Fusheng emerged from an inner room, where he had overheard their entire conversation. The pawnbroker, now all smiles, greeted Luo Fusheng warmly. Luo Fusheng expressed interest in the necklace Tianying had just tried to redeem. Despite the pawnbroker's attempts to offer him more valuable items, Luo Fusheng insisted on the necklace, stating it "had a connection" with him. He paid the boss a small sum and took the necklace.
Desperate to raise funds, Tianci ventured into a casino alone. He initially won some money, which made him overconfident, leading him to gamble larger sums. Unbeknownst to him, he was being targeted by the casino's owner, Hou Li, who was cheating. Tianci eventually lost everything and was forced to sign an IOU for one hundred yuan, a substantial amount. Meanwhile, Xu Xingcheng presented Tianying with a bouquet of flowers and invited her out.
Tianying initially wanted to discuss their relationship and create some distance. She tried to refuse his friendship, pointing out that he was the Police Chief's son and would likely become a policeman, a profession she viewed negatively due to her experiences in Dongjiang. However, Xu Xingcheng clarified that he had no intention of becoming a policeman; instead, he aspired to be a doctor, using a scalpel to heal people and address the injustices, poverty, and suffering in Dongjiang.
Touched by his earnest ideal, Tianying's perception of him changed. She then shared her own dream of becoming a renowned movie actress, like a butterfly. They made a pinky promise to return to the flower fields to celebrate once their respective dreams were realized. As a souvenir, Xu Xingcheng gave Tianying a bracelet, hoping it would remind her of him every day. Tianying was delighted by their outing and the prospect of future dates. Tianying's happiness was short-lived.
Upon returning home, she was met with the news that Tianci was in trouble. She rushed back to the casino, learning about his one hundred yuan debt. She reprimanded him for gambling, but Tianci explained he had only gone to win money to redeem her necklace, and to provide for their master and junior siblings. He insisted that the casino staff had cheated him, swearing he had seen their deceptive moves, honed by his theatrical training.
He confessed that he was also forced to sign the IOU in their master Jiuzuihong's name, fearing it would ruin their master's reputation. Despite his clear account, Tianci felt powerless against the casino's overwhelming numbers. Tianying, however, refused to let it go. Feeling that their troupe had been constantly bullied since arriving in Dongjiang, she was determined to seek justice. Tianying confronted Hou Li, challenging him to a game.
She proposed that if Tianci could identify the cards, it would prove Hou Li was cheating, and the IOU should be returned with an apology. At that moment, Luo Fusheng, who had already sent Luo Cheng to investigate Hou Li's suspicious casino, arrived. He offered to represent the casino in the challenge himself. Luo Fusheng mocked Hou Li for letting a young girl challenge his authority and suggested that refusing would make the casino appear guilty.
He boasted about his superior card-shuffling skills, asserting that his participation would lend credibility to the game. Tianying eagerly accepted the challenge. Luo Fusheng explained the rules: he would shuffle the cards three times, and Tianci would have to correctly identify the designated card each time to win. Luo Fusheng demonstrated incredibly fast hand movements, but Tianci's rigorous training had given him keen eyesight.
He successfully identified the card all three times, winning the game and earning the respect of the onlookers. Luo Fusheng declared that the results proved Hou Li was cheating and demanded he return the IOU and apologize. Hou Li, however, refused, citing that the casino was the Hong family's business, a "public matter" that Luo Fusheng, as the Hongmen's second-in-command, had no authority to decide without their elder master's approval. Luo Fusheng then declared it a "private matter."
He pulled a confused Tianying to his side, embraced her tightly, and publicly kissed her. He announced to everyone that Tianying was his woman, therefore he had to ensure she got her IOU back and received an apology. Cornered and humiliated, Hou Li reluctantly returned the IOU and offered a grudging apology, though he clearly resented Luo Fusheng. Outside the casino, Tianying confronted Luo Fusheng, grateful for his help but feeling violated by his actions. She demanded the IOU.
Luo Fusheng, however, teased her, claiming he was the one who had been "violated" after saving her life and getting "hurt." He then "threatened" her, saying if she didn't get on his motorcycle, he would never return the IOU and would even use it to ruin her master Jiuzuihong's reputation at their opera troupe. Despite Tianci's worried protests from the casino entrance, Tianying reluctantly agreed and rode off with Luo Fusheng.
They arrived at a quiet pier, a place Luo Fusheng frequented when he needed peace. He presented his terms for returning the IOU: Tianying had to grant him three wishes. For the first wish, he demanded she sing for him anytime he desired, anywhere, until he was satisfied and praised her performance with a "good" approval. Tianying expressed concern that he might unfairly refuse to be satisfied, but Luo Fusheng playfully admitted to being a rogue.
After Tianying called him various insults, she finally agreed. Pleased, Luo Fusheng tore up the IOU on the spot and, to Tianying's surprise, also returned her necklace, which he had bought from the pawnbroker. Meanwhile, Xu Ruian prepared a lavish welcome-home banquet for his son, Xu Xingcheng, inviting prominent families from Dongjiang, including the Hongmen and the Lin family. Lin Daoshan, accompanied by his son Lin Qikai, was filled with seething resentment.
He made it clear to Lin Qikai that only out of respect for the Xu family would he sit at the same table as the Hong family. Lin Daoshan recounted how Hong Zhengbao was responsible for the death of his second wife, Anni, and the disappearance of their young daughter, Lin Ruomeng. Lin Qikai, who held Anni and Ruomeng dear, affirmed his understanding, sharing his enduring grief over Ruomeng's disappearance and his persistent belief that she was still alive.
He estimated that Ruomeng would now be twenty-two years old. As the Xu family's banquet was about to begin, Lin Daoshan and Lin Qikai departed for the event. Back at their quarters, Tianci anxiously asked Tianying if Luo Fusheng had harmed her. Tianying assured him that she was fine and that Luo Fusheng had indeed torn up the IOU. Tianci was relieved but then asked how Luo Fusheng had come to possess her necklace. Tianying simply said it was "a long story" as she needed to prepare for her upcoming performance.
