Upon returning home late, Tianying was immediately confronted by Duan Tianci, who was waiting angrily. He chastised her for openly associating with Xu Xingcheng, accusing her of being naive and vulnerable to a wealthy playboy who wouldn't be serious about her. Tianying calmly informed him that she was now Xu Xingcheng's girlfriend, a decision she had carefully considered, and requested that he stop interfering.
Tianci, enraged, sputtered that she was meant to marry someone stable who would always be by her side, implicitly referring to himself. Growing tired of his unreasonable accusations, Tianying dismissed him and retreated to her room. Meanwhile, Xu Ruian summoned his son, Xu Xingcheng, sternly questioning his neglect of police duties for an "actress."
Xu Xingcheng defended Peking Opera as an art form and asserted his right to personal freedom, having already sacrificed his dream to become a police officer for his father. Xu Ruian, however, declared that Xu Xingcheng could have any freedom, even "three wives and four concubines," but only after marrying Hong Lan, reminding him that he must prioritize his responsibilities. Concurrently, Duan Tianci discovered Nine-Aged Red suffering from a severe coughing fit, spitting blood.
Nine-Aged Red, sensing his own mortality, voiced his hope that Tianying and Tianci would lead the troupe together. Duan Tianci anxiously confessed that Tianying was dating Xu Xingcheng, warning that she might marry someone else if the truth was not revealed. Nine-Aged Red was furious at Tianying's actions and regretted bringing the troupe to Dongjiang, realizing it was time to tell her the long-held secret.
Hong Lan later joined Luo Fusheng for a walk, playfully attempting to "psychologically counsel" him to move past his heartbreak and embrace new beginnings. Luo Fusheng, though inwardly pained, feigned indifference and even offered blessings to Xu Xingcheng and Tianying. Delighted, Hong Lan produced a ring she had bought, asking him to put it on her finger. Luo Fusheng, uncomfortable, deftly avoided her overt gesture by insisting such a significant act required a grander setting and a more formal proposal.
He then diverted her attention by suggesting they move on to a "third stage of therapy": finding a good meal. Later, Xu Xingcheng created a magical, romantic evening for Tianying, with candlelight and music, inviting her to dance in a place he described as "their own world" under the stars. He recounted how he personally lit every candle, symbolizing the stars he illuminated for her.
Deeply moved, Tianying gave him her cherished necklace, worn since childhood and more precious than her life, asking him to keep it as a symbol of her presence. Xu Xingcheng vowed to wear it over his heart, connecting their souls. As he leaned in to kiss her, Duan Tianci suddenly burst in, shouting that Nine-Aged Red was "dying." Shocked, Tianying abruptly left her romantic evening to rush home with her brother.
At home, Nine-Aged Red confronted Tianying, angrily accusing her of hiding her relationship with Xu Xingcheng. He then revealed the shocking truth: Tianying was not his biological daughter. He explained that years ago, Tianci found a young, unconscious Tianying in the forest, and he and his late wife adopted her with the intention that she would eventually marry Tianci and inherit the troupe.
He desperately pleaded with her, highlighting their life-saving and nurturing grace, and Tianci's devoted care, begging her to give up Xu Xingcheng and marry Tianci to secure the troupe's future. Overwhelmed and horrified by the revelation and her adoptive father's fervent pleas, Tianying tore herself away and fled to her room, distraught. Tianying spent the night weeping in her room, torn between her love for Xu Xingcheng and her immense gratitude towards her adoptive family.
The next morning, to her utter dismay, she found Nine-Aged Red, Duan Tianci, and all the Brothers of the troupe kneeling in the courtyard, imploring her to marry Tianci. Nine-Aged Red threatened to remain kneeling indefinitely until she agreed. Unable to bear such a sight, Tianying pleaded with them to rise, promising to visit the temple to consult her unknown biological parents before giving her final answer.
She then went to the temple, kneeling and pouring out her heart to her unknown birth parents. She reflected on Nine-Aged Red's profound kindness and upbringing, acknowledging the immense debt she owed him. However, she also voiced her deep love for Xu Xingcheng and her yearning to be with him, expressing her profound dilemma and asking for guidance on which path to choose.
That morning, Xu Xingcheng woke up in high spirits, but his joy vanished when he discovered a newspaper announcing his engagement to Hong Lan. He angrily confronted Xu Ruian, outraged that his marriage had been arranged and publicly declared without his consent. Xu Ruian coldly asserted his power, stating that he controlled the media and threatened to either "save or destroy" Tianying if Xu Xingcheng didn't comply, emphasizing that his son was nothing without the Xu family.
He even mockingly suggested Tianying could become a concubine after his marriage to Hong Lan. Xu Xingcheng found his father's attitude reprehensible but felt powerless to resist. Meanwhile, Hong Lan also fiercely resisted her forced engagement, first threatening to commit suicide with scissors, then declaring a hunger strike. When she disappeared from the family mansion, her father, Hong Zhengbao, accurately surmised she had gone to Luo Fusheng and sent men to retrieve her.
Luo Fusheng had just seen a newspaper announcing Xu Xingcheng and Hong Lan's engagement, and his subordinate, Luo Cheng, was suggesting it might clear the path for Luo Fusheng and Tianying. Just then, Hong Lan appeared, discreetly signaling him from a corner, and he quickly led her away to a private location. Separately, Xu Xingyuan was painting a portrait of Lin Qikai, who felt a little self-conscious.
Xu Xingyuan reassured him, admitting she was nervous herself, as it was her first time painting him so openly. When Lin Qikai remarked that the portrait made him look more handsome than he truly was, Xu Xingyuan earnestly insisted that in her eyes, he was indeed that remarkable, a beauty that no brush could fully capture. Despite his modesty, Xu Xingyuan maintained her admiration, and they continued their session.
