Tianying tearfully prepared for Nine-year-old Hong's funeral, memories of his strict yet loving nature flooding her mind. Though not her biological father and insistent on her marriage, he had raised her with care. She was grateful to Luo Fusheng for allowing her to see her father one last time. Tianci volunteered to handle the practical arrangements for his dad's burial, including the coffin.
In a flashback, Tianying recalled a moment when Nine-year-old Hong publicly disciplined her during practice, explaining that in the troupe, there were no special allowances for women, only the strict relationship between master and apprentice. He then privately expressed his deep affection, saying he only punished her for show to maintain rules, and confessed he couldn't bear to truly hurt her.
He once told her that the gongs and drums sounding were like army drums, and he wished to die on stage, fearless and always striving for success. He also stressed the importance of self-respect for performers, who are often looked down upon, and urged her to think deeply about her actions. Tianying remembered him wishing for her to sing well and marry a good man someday.
Back in the present, Tianying told Luo Fusheng she wanted to handle her father's funeral herself, feeling it was the last thing she could do for him. Luo Fusheng, concerned for her as a "weak girl" enduring so much, offered his full support if she needed anything. Meanwhile, a drunk Xu Xingcheng angrily confronted Luo Fusheng, blaming him for everything.
He believed that if Luo Fusheng hadn't intervened with his revolver, he and Tianying would have already fled on a ship. Now, he had lost Tianying and was branded a murderer, all thanks to Luo Fusheng. Luo Fusheng tried to explain that he had only wanted to bring Tianying out for Xu Xingcheng before the wedding, so they could talk and not miss each other, never foreseeing such a tragic outcome.
Unconvinced, Xu Xingcheng accused Luo Fusheng of being selfish and hypocritical, believing he deliberately kept Tianying by his side to prevent their happiness. He asserted that Luo Fusheng had ruined everyone's lives, including his own. Xu Xingcheng then cursed Luo Fusheng, claiming he deserved to lose Hong Lan, who loved him, and Tianying, who loved Xu Xingcheng but was forced to marry Tianci, as a just retribution.
Luo Fusheng, still considering Xu Xingcheng his brother, urged him to go home and sober up, promising to visit him the next day. However, Xu Xingcheng vehemently refused, declaring that their brotherhood was over and he would expose Luo Fusheng's "hypocritical mask." Upon returning home, Xu Xingcheng was met by Xu Ruian, who was aware of the wedding robbery. Xu Ruian dismissed his son's actions, emphasizing that true power allows one to control anyone's life and obtain their desires.
Xu Xingcheng questioned how his father always seemed to anticipate his every move, feeling controlled. Xu Ruian proudly stated that his superior ability and power enabled him to control his son, but framed it as a lesson in wielding power. He advised Xu Xingcheng to be grateful for a powerful father and to step on his shoulders to gain more power and control over others' lives, including the woman he couldn't have.
Xu Ruian acknowledged Xu Xingcheng's current hatred but assured him that he would eventually understand his father's love once he surpassed him in power. The troupe removed their festive red decorations and set up a memorial hall for Nine-year-old Hong. Luo Fusheng, worried about Tianying, stayed outside the troupe's premises. Boss Ma arrived and complained about the bad luck a funeral would bring to his venue.
He insisted that Nine-year-old Hong could be buried in three days, but demanded an unfair 1:9 profit split for all future performances at his Dragon Father Theater. Luo Fusheng attempted to argue, but Tianying quickly accepted the harsh terms. She explained to Luo Fusheng that without Boss Ma's venue, the troupe would have no place in Dongjiang, and they couldn't forget their beginnings.
She believed that with hard work and determination, the troupe would not fall and could still honor her father's spirit. Seeing her resolve, Boss Ma relented and allowed the funeral to proceed. During the funeral, Luo Fusheng paid his respects to Nine-year-old Hong, identifying himself as a devoted fan of his performances and expressing sorrow that his plays were cut short. Xu Xingcheng then arrived with flowers to offer his condolences.
Enraged, Tianci lunged at Xu Xingcheng, accusing him of being his father's killer. Tianying intervened, pulling Tianci back. She then confronted Xu Xingcheng, telling him that neither she nor the troupe would accept his sentiments, sincere or not. She ordered him to leave and never return, emphasizing that her father's dying wish was for her to stay away from him. She explained that seeing him constantly reminded her of her own role in her father's death.
Xu Xingcheng desperately apologized, admitting his selfishness during the wedding robbery. He claimed he had mistakenly believed Nine-year-old Hong was merely staging a dramatic act and insisted he was trying to be a good policeman. Tianying, however, remained resolute, stating that she could not be with him. She revealed that she had intended to repay her father's nurturing kindness with her own life, but instead had inadvertently caused his death, leaving her with no peace.
She pleaded with him to disappear from her life. Xu Xingcheng's final, desperate question was whether she had ever truly wanted to leave with him, to which Tianying firmly replied that there was no possibility between them. Heartbroken and enraged, Xu Xingcheng left, vowing that everyone would pay for the "funeral of their love." Elsewhere, Hong Lan informed Hong Zhengbao about Xu Xingcheng's wedding robbery and elopement attempt, hoping this would lead her father to cancel their engagement.
Hong Zhengbao was initially startled but quickly relaxed upon learning Xu Xingcheng had failed. He believed Xu Xingcheng's failure showed he had "pulled back from the brink" and insisted that Hong Lan still marry him. He argued that by forgiving Xu Xingcheng, the Hong family would gain significant leverage over the Xu family, ensuring Hong Lan would not suffer in her marriage.
Despite Hong Lan's pleas for her own happiness and her father's earlier apology, he firmly declared that the marriage was non-negotiable, stating he wanted his daughter to have a "good home." After the funeral, Tianying remained inconsolable, wishing she could rewind time to when her father was alive, even if it meant enduring his scoldings.
Luo Fusheng took her to a courtyard that reminded her of where she and her father first settled in Dongjiang, though she lamented that those times were gone forever. Luo Fusheng then put on a shadow play for her. Through the puppet of "Nine-year-old Hong," he reminded Tianying that her father was watching her from above and she must not be lazy in her training.
The "father" in the play assured her that she owed no one, that she had brought him joy, and had taken over the troupe, doing more than enough. He emphasized that her life was her own, and she must live it strongly and bravely to ensure his happiness. Moved to tears, Tianying promised to work harder. Luo Fusheng then handed her a letter, which was her suicide note.
He gently reiterated that her father was watching her from heaven, and if she didn't live her life well, she would be letting him down the most. Tianying tore up the letter, declaring she would no longer run away. She vowed to pull herself together for her father and uphold the troupe, sincerely thanking Luo Fusheng. Later, Tianci was seen alone, expressing his sadness that Nine-year-old Hong was gone.
He worried about the future of the troupe without their "big tree," recalling how they had always relied on him, sheltered from troubles. He also lamented that Tianying, his intended wife, was suffering alone and seemed distant, unable to share her feelings with him.
