Hong Lan led Luo Fusheng to a church, revealing that she had run away from home. She confessed her long-held romantic feelings for him, explaining that she admired his handsomeness, bravery, and righteousness, and understood him completely, even his flaws. She explained that her past mischievous behavior stemmed from his "Elm head" inability to grasp her affections and his attempts to push her toward Xu Xingcheng.

Hong Lan shared that her mother passed away when she was very young, and she felt unwelcome at home after her father remarried, finding solace and security only when she was with Luo Fusheng. She explicitly stated her desire for a romantic relationship, not a familial one, and asked him to consider reciprocating her feelings. When Luo Fusheng began to respond, Hong Lan quickly stopped him, fearing a rejection that would extinguish her hope.

To lighten the mood, Luo Fusheng reminded her of a childhood incident where she tried to push Xu Xingcheng into the water but fell in herself. He recounted how she later told their teacher a "water monster" had stolen her homework, resulting in a punishment. Hong Lan, embarrassed, tried to deny it, but eventually conceded.

Despite Luo Fusheng's attempts to cheer her up, Hong Lan remained resolute about not returning home until her father canceled her engagement with the Xu family. Soon after, Hong Zhengbao called Luo Fusheng, demanding to know Hong Lan's whereabouts. Luo Fusheng tried to explain that Hong Lan needed time to accept the arranged marriage. Enraged, Hong Lan snatched the phone and hung up, much to her father's fury on the other end.

Luo Fusheng then advised Hong Lan that her "threatening tricks" were transparent to her father, and while acknowledging her right to be upset, he urged her to appreciate her father's love, even if his methods were flawed. Hong Lan retorted that her marriage to Xu Xingcheng would only benefit Luo Fusheng and Tianying, causing Luo Fusheng to abruptly leave, arranging for someone to protect her. Meanwhile, Tianying had spent a day and night kneeling in a temple, seeking clarity.

A master advised her to let go of worldly worries to find her heart's true desire. Tianci found her there, worried, and tried to persuade her to marry him, emphasizing their childhood bond. Tianying politely refused, reiterating that she only saw him as a brother.

Tianci then produced a newspaper announcing Xu Xingcheng’s engagement to Hong Lan, claiming Xu Xingcheng was unreliable and that such a match was unsuitable due to Tianying's humble background in a small troupe compared to the Xu family's prominent status. He urged her to remember the kindness he and Jiusu Hong had shown her over the years.

Back at the troupe, Jiusu Hong, in visibly failing health, tearfully pleaded with Tianying, stating that his only wish before he died was to see her marry Tianci and inherit the troupe together. Overwhelmed by her adoptive father's distress and the collective pleas of her fellow troupe members, Tianying reluctantly agreed. Just as she made this difficult decision, Xu Xingcheng arrived at the troupe, desperately calling for Tianying to explain the engagement.

Tianci smugly turned him away, telling Xu Xingcheng that Tianying did not wish to see him and reminding him of his impending marriage to Hong Lan. Tianying watched, heartbroken, from inside, realizing there was no turning back. Xu Xingcheng, devastated by the news and Tianying's apparent rejection, sought solace in alcohol, lamenting his helplessness and sorrow.

Luo Fusheng found him, noting the Peking Opera playing—"A Gathering of Heroes, Borrowing the East Wind"—an art form Xu Xingcheng had studied since falling in love with Tianying. Xu Xingcheng admitted that his father had orchestrated the engagement and had always controlled his life's decisions. He confessed his feelings of inadequacy and guilt towards Luo Fusheng (for loving the same girl), Hong Lan (for the unwanted engagement), and especially Tianying (for his inability to be with her).

Luo Fusheng strongly rebuked him, pointing out Hong Lan's courage in running away to defy her arranged marriage. He chastised Xu Xingcheng for his passive drinking, urging him to reclaim the unyielding spirit of a leader he once possessed. Luo Fusheng declared that if Xu Xingcheng succumbed to his father's will and gave up Tianying, he would be betraying their friendship and his own ideals.

Xu Xingcheng insisted he hadn't given up, citing his decision to become a police officer for Tianying's sake and his willingness to sacrifice his life for her. However, he expressed despair that Tianying would not see him. Determined to save their love, Luo Fusheng went to Tianying's home, slipping in through a window.

He explained that Xu Xingcheng's engagement was not his will and encouraged her to meet him to clarify things, urging her not to give up on their love. Although Tianying acknowledged Xu Xingcheng's innocence, she felt their relationship was doomed by fate. Luo Fusheng, however, refused to believe in fate and convinced her to meet Xu Xingcheng one last time.

When Tianying finally appeared, Xu Xingcheng was overcome with relief and immediately apologized for his drinking, reaffirming his love and explaining that the engagement was entirely his father's doing. He passionately proposed that they elope, suggesting they could go to Europe to escape their families and societal constraints, reminding her of their dreams of a life together.

Tearfully, Tianying confessed that she had forgotten those dreams and, with a heavy heart, broke up with him, announcing that she was to marry Tianci the next day. A shocked Xu Xingcheng learned that Tianying was an orphan, whose life had been saved by Tianci and who was then adopted by Jiusu Hong, and that her marriage to Tianci was a lifelong obligation to repay their immense kindness, a debt she felt she could never settle.

Xu Xingcheng, distraught, vowed to only marry her and begged her not to leave. Despite his desperate pleas and promise, Tianying remained firm, believing their separation was inevitable. She implored him to forget her, accept his marriage to Hong Lan, and take care of himself. As Luo Fusheng walked Tianying home, he urged her once more to reconsider her decision.

Tianying, her face devoid of hope, replied that she would never regret her choice, making a final request for Luo Fusheng to look after Xu Xingcheng. When Luo Fusheng questioned her own happiness, she sadly stated that her happiness was a small price to pay for the sake of fulfilling her duties to others.
