Years ago, Uncle Kun (Liang Zhaokun) visited an orphanage to adopt a child. His attention was drawn to a boy named Xiao Qi, who became uncontrollably violent and enraged at the sight of blood. Seeing this innate darkness, Uncle Kun decided he was the one.

After taking him home, he addressed the boy's habit of painting his face, telling him that if he wanted to wear a mask, he should weld it to his skin forever and stop using fake pigments. To prove the boy's coldness, Uncle Kun cut the boy's hand; Xiao Qi remained unfazed as the blood flowed. Kun then promised to send the boy to the place most suitable for his "talents": the police academy.

Upon his graduation and entry into the police force, the young man, now known as Zhou Ziheng, received his first major assignment from Uncle Kun. The crime boss identified Guan Renjie as a significant threat who was constantly planting undercover agents within the Cangfeng organization. While reviewing Guan's files, Zhou Ziheng noticed a photograph of Guan's adopted daughter, Hao Yu.

To infiltrate Guan's inner circle, Zhou orchestrated a scene where a vagrant he had hired harassed Hao Yu on her way home, allowing Zhou to step in and play the hero. The plan worked; Guan Renjie later questioned why Zhou was in that precinct, and Zhou claimed he was investigating the 2002 Cangfeng smuggling case. Grateful for his daughter’s rescue, Guan invited him to dinner. Zhou Ziheng was careful to tie up loose ends.

He met with the vagrant he had hired for the staged attack and provided him with food secretly laced with poison, killing him to ensure silence. Meanwhile, Zhou’s career progressed, but his superiors eventually questioned his closeness to Hao Yu. They warned him that her biological family had a messy history involving bribery and debt—her parents had attempted to bribe an official, and her brother had committed suicide over gambling debts.

Zhou dismissed their concerns, insisting he and Hao Yu were merely ordinary friends and that she was only showing gratitude. The relationship eventually reached a turning point when Hao Yu called for a meeting. She suggested that their clandestine "situationship" should end, especially now that Zhou had a significant career opportunity.

Though he put on a front of reluctant heartbreak, Zhou was secretly relieved that she had initiated the breakup, as he had already been looking for a way to discard her. Soon after, Uncle Kun ordered him to eliminate Guan Renjie. On the day of the planned hit, Zhou arrived early and saw Hao Yu entering the location. Despite her presence, he coordinated with his associate, Jiali, to have a man named Weihao proceed with the assassination.

Following the incident, Zhou appeared before Uncle Kun with a broken leg, claiming he had injured himself so he would have a legitimate excuse to stop monitoring the Cangfeng organization. However, the alliance between them was far from stable. Uncle Kun revealed that he had been recording all their conversations and threatened to expose Zhou to his police superiors. He even mocked the "heroic" scars on Zhou’s neck, knowing they were not actually sustained in the line of duty.

Furious at being treated like a "dog" on a leash, Zhou vowed to find a way to break free and destroy his handler. Zhou Ziheng struggled to crack Guan Renjie’s phone until he remembered a poetry riddle game he used to play with Hao Yu. He sent her a message with a classic verse by Su Shi regarding the dead and living drifting apart ("Ten years, dead and living dim and draw apart"), which successfully gained her trust.

During their meeting, Hao Yu, still harboring feelings, revealed that she had been the one feeding intel on Cangfeng to Guan Renjie. Realizing she still trusted him, Zhou decided to exploit her emotions to take down both Uncle Kun and his rival, Ji Zhijie. He then approached his superior, Officer Lin, claiming a reliable source had confirmed a major deal between Ji Zhijie and a contact named Suchart, requesting maximum backup for a sting operation.

Meanwhile, during a typhoon that caused a power outage at his residence, Ji Zhijie sat with Hao Yu by candlelight. He reflected on his own grim childhood, recalling how he was abandoned in a storage locker and spent his early years scavenging for food in trash heaps. He told Hao Yu how Uncle Kun had chosen him because he was a "wolf" who dared to fight back, unlike Kun's other "sons" who were like "dogs."

Despite his violent past, he confessed that meeting her had made him forget what it was like to live as a monster. He shared his dream of escaping to the UK with her to start a simple life, even proposing to her with a ring. As the time for the smuggling deal approached, Ji Zhijie prepared to leave.

He instructed his man, Feihu, to take Hao Yu to the airport first, promising to meet her there once his business was concluded. Little did he know, Zhou Ziheng was listening to their conversation through a hidden bug, consumed by rage.

As Ji set off into the storm for the transaction, Zhou and the police were already closing in, fueled by Zhou's ambition to wipe out the Cangfeng organization, eliminate Kun and Ji, and reclaim Hao Yu as the ultimate victor.
