Meng Xue became increasingly anxious when Mudong (Mr. Xu’s company) delayed giving her a definite answer. Mr. Xu’s assistant informed Cindy (likely representing Meng Xue’s side) that Mr. Xu was unavailable today and his schedule for tomorrow would be confirmed later. Mr. Xu instructed his assistant Elsa to continue delaying Meng Xue, confident that his ongoing plans had not been discovered.

He emphasized the importance of finalizing a contract with Mr. Sun, noting that this strategic move would inevitably strain relations with the headquarters. Elsa reaffirmed her trust in Mr. Xu's judgment of the market and people, to which Mr. Xu hoped Chuck would concur. Meanwhile, Su Yunjin, having received a contract from Elsa, completed and emailed it to Mr. Xu, who thanked her for her hard work before she left the office.

At the hospital, Zhou Ziyi was enthusiastically playing a guessing game on his phone with Meng Xue and Song Ming, jokingly celebrating his winnings. Cheng Zheng and Su Yunjin arrived, but a nurse soon asked all visitors to leave as visiting hours were over. After Song Ming and Meng Xue departed, Zhou Ziyi complained to Cheng Zheng and Su Yunjin about the lack of timely food, crediting Meng Xue for bringing him sustenance.

Cheng Zheng scolded Zhou Ziyi for eating so much right after surgery, but Zhou Ziyi countered that his leg was injured, not his stomach, and that eating would help him recover in a couple of weeks. He then revealed that doctors had informed him he could no longer play football, but he claimed it was a convenient excuse, as he had already considered quitting. Mo Yuhua, who had been diligently caring for him, then walked into the room.

Zhou Ziyi suggested his visitors create a schedule to avoid overwhelming him or leaving him lonely. Mo Yuhua then excused herself to get his evening medication. Cheng Zheng greeted Mo Yuhua, reassuring her of their continued friendship. Su Yunjin, noticing Mo Yuhua's subdued demeanor, invited her for a walk outside to talk. During their walk, Mo Yuhua nostalgically recalled their carefree university days.

Su Yunjin apologized for not informing her about Zhou Ziyi's marriage sooner, believing it might have spared Mo Yuhua some pain. Mo Yuhua, however, stated that she needed to experience things for herself to truly understand. Su Yunjin questioned why Mo Yuhua continued to entertain Zhou Ziyi’s thoughtless gestures, such as accepting the necklace he gave her.

Mo Yuhua explained that Zhou Ziyi had given it to her to bring himself peace of mind, and she had accepted it for his sake, reiterating that she would never try to break up his family. She confessed that while she was heartbroken by his marriage, she could accept it, having grown accustomed to his indifference to her feelings over the years.

However, his act of giving her the necklace as a thoughtful gesture was what truly devastated her, as it symbolized his clear intention to sever their ambiguous connection. Su Yunjin urged her to stop clinging to a hopeless relationship and prioritize her own well-being. Mo Yuhua assured Su Yunjin that she would manage her situation and told her to focus on her own happy life with Cheng Zheng.

Su Yunjin, feeling slightly defensive, clarified that while she and Cheng Zheng lived together, they slept in separate rooms because her mother was staying with them. Mo Yuhua playfully teased her, suggesting she was happier because she had stayed in Zhou Ziyi's room (as a caretaker) the previous night. As they left the hospital, Meng Xue requested a ride from Cheng Zheng, citing difficulty finding a taxi. Cheng Zheng agreed.

Meng Xue suggested dropping Su Yunjin at the university first, but Cheng Zheng insisted on taking Meng Xue to her hotel first, after which he and Su Yunjin would go home. Overhearing this, Meng Xue was visibly surprised to learn that Cheng Zheng and Su Yunjin were living together. Cheng Zheng then dropped Su Yunjin at her company.

During his drive with Meng Xue to her hotel, Meng Xue implied that Su Yunjin's sudden return to work was a warning gesture aimed at her. Cheng Zheng dismissed this, noting Su Yunjin’s usual dedication to her work. At the hotel, Meng Xue initiated a conversation, questioning if Cheng Zheng's long pursuit of Su Yunjin was fueled by a grudge.

Cheng Zheng clarified that his initial feelings might have been a whim, but he was grateful Su Yunjin had made him wait. This patience, he explained, allowed his affection to deepen, preventing his early, perhaps “opinionated,” devotion from becoming a mere joke. Meng Xue affirmed his sentiment, calling him the best. Meanwhile, Su Yunjin, still at the office late into the night, confronted Mr Xu, who was also working.

She showed him Meng Xue's email, pointing out the stark differences between Meng Xue's proposed contract and the one Elsa had provided earlier. Mr Xu then revealed that he had no intention of partnering with Meng Xue's company and that the contract Su Yunjin had prepared was for a different, undisclosed client. He admitted to leveraging the animosity between Su Yunjin and Cindy to delay the project, which allowed him to successfully secure alternative business partners.

He even acknowledged that Su Yunjin's less-than-perfect performance during a prior meeting with Chuck had inadvertently benefited his scheme. Su Yunjin felt used, but Mr Xu asserted that she had "helped" him. When she pressed why he hadn't simply rejected Meng Xue's proposal from the outset, he invited her for coffee. At the coffee shop, Mr Xu explained his business philosophy: results supersede process, especially with international headquarters.

He dismissed Su Yunjin's "guilt" as immaturity, claiming everyone, including Chuck and Cindy, harbored selfish motives that he skillfully exploited. He encouraged Su Yunjin to cultivate her own self-interest beyond merely excelling at tasks, emphasizing that strategic choices often outweigh sheer effort. Su Yunjin then realized her significant involvement in the project was less about her performance and more about her complex relationship with Meng Xue.

Mr Xu confirmed her innate capability, recalling how she fiercely defended someone she valued at an earlier reception, demonstrating a quality he sought beyond mere technical skill. He then sent her home, expecting Cindy to be at the office the next day. Separately, Mr Xu received a message indicating his wife planned to visit Shanghai next week and wished to meet him, to which he agreed. Cheng Zheng returned to the office to pick up Su Yunjin.

Playfully, he recounted to her Meng Xue’s emotional declaration about her years of persistence stemming from his initial rejection, and how he simply told Meng Xue to go home. They then drove home together, their affection evident. Elsewhere, Song Ming found Meng Xue at her hotel.

They decided to share a drink at a bar, where Meng Xue expressed her disappointment, sharing Cheng Zheng’s candid explanation that he was grateful Su Yunjin had made him wait, preventing his initial romantic impulses from becoming a superficial joke. Song Ming, who had long harbored unrequited feelings for Meng Xue since high school, listened intently to her complaints.

He noted the similarities in callousness between Cheng Zheng and Zhou Ziyi, urging Meng Xue not to let herself become like Mo Yuhua in her prolonged suffering. At home, Shen Juan cooked noodles for Zhang Yue. She remarked that it had been a long time since she tasted his cooking. He apologized for his recent busyness, explaining that his intense focus on work was meant to free her from burdens.

Zhang Yue, however, countered that while she was indeed free, she was not happy, spending her days idling at home and questioning if he found her content. When Shen Juan defended himself by stating he was merely working and not engaging in illicit affairs, Zhang Yue angrily compared his behavior to that of her father. She recalled her parents' late-night arguments, where her father would plausibly deny any wrongdoing, which she found disgusting.

She accused Shen Juan of neglecting his family responsibilities and her needs for companionship and affection, reminding him that their marriage's initial reasons were clear, but she had hoped for genuine emotional connection over time, which now seemed absent from his gaze. Shen Juan acknowledged his failures, admitting to an avoidance mentality and pride over his early career success, which led him to prioritize work at the expense of their relationship.

He confessed that her significant help had ironically wounded his self-esteem, driving him to work even harder. Despite his apologies, Zhang Yue, observing his smart attire, told him to attend to his business, adding that he need not report his whereabouts. She concluded by stating she would sleep in the master bedroom that night, subtly indicating he usually slept elsewhere, and planned to watch some TV. Shen Juan then left for work.
