During their high school years, Su Yunjin sat in front of Cheng Zheng in class. He often pushed her to study harder, particularly in science subjects, a display of attention that stirred discomfort and jealousy in Meng Xue. One day, Cheng Zheng playfully threw a crumpled paper ball at Su Yunjin during class, leading their teacher to send both of them to the blackboard to solve a math problem. Su Yunjin, struggling with math, felt embarrassed.

To spare her, Cheng Zheng deliberately claimed he couldn't solve the problem, which angered the teacher who then punished both to stand at the back of the classroom for the remainder of the lesson. After class, Su Yunjin confronted Cheng Zheng, demanding to know why he had thrown the paper ball at her, believing he was causing trouble for her. Cheng Zheng simply stated he was returning a paper ball she had supposedly left on his desk.

He then patiently began to explain the math problem they had been assigned, detailing the substitution method and even an alternative approach he had developed. He told her to simply memorize the formulas if she was "that stupid" and to ask him questions instead of trying to figure things out on her own, claiming her brain couldn't manage it. This display of attention and help intensified Meng Xue's jealousy.

Su Yunjin later confided in her close friend and deskmate, Mo Yuhua, lamenting her perceived lack of intelligence. She observed how Cheng Zheng effortlessly excelled despite his playful demeanor, while she struggled even after diligently completing all the practice problems Mo Yuhua gave her. She confessed to feeling "a little bit stupid" and unsuitable for science, envying Mo Yuhua and Cheng Zheng's natural talent, believing they were destined for great universities.

Mo Yuhua reassured her, encouraging her to persevere in her chosen science path. She reminded Su Yunjin that understanding a problem might not come instantly and that "happiness has many definitions." Su Yunjin shared her own definition of happiness: to study hard, get into university, and be able to care for her parents in the future. One day, Su Yunjin, experiencing her menstrual period, was rushing to the restroom when Cheng Zheng playfully blocked her path.

In the scramble, her sanitary pad accidentally fell to the floor, causing her immense embarrassment. Classmates gathered, creating a spectacle, until Cheng Zheng tried to disperse them, calling them "nosy." Cheng Zheng's friend, Zhou Ziyi, advised him to steer clear of Su Yunjin during this "irritable" time for women.

However, seeing Su Yunjin in pain, Cheng Zheng feigned a sudden stomachache to get permission from the teacher to use the restroom, only to discreetly fill a bottle with hot water for her. Meng Xue observed Cheng Zheng's attentiveness, which made her very displeased. Later, while Su Yunjin was working her part-time job at Ringer Bookstore, Cheng Zheng arrived, ostensibly to borrow a book. He specifically requested "The Swordsman" from a high shelf.

Su Yunjin explained that books for loan were kept higher up, while those for in-store reading were lower. As she stood on a stool to retrieve the book, Cheng Zheng noticed she seemed unwell and, concerned, offered to help. Despite her protests, he insisted. In a clumsy moment, Su Yunjin lost her balance and fell, with Cheng Zheng catching her. They tumbled to the floor amidst a cascade of books.

The bookstore owner reprimanded them, telling them to clean up the mess. Once alone, Su Yunjin, still reeling from the incident, angrily confronted Cheng Zheng. She confessed her confusion about how she might have offended him and pleaded with him to stop bothering her. She stated that her life was already chaotic enough and she wanted no further connection with him, asking him to pretend she didn't exist for the next two years and to avoid contact after graduation.

Cheng Zheng was stunned, realizing she completely misunderstood his intentions, exclaiming, "How is it possible that I dislike you?" During a parent-teacher meeting, Su Yunjin's parents traveled to attend. Cheng Zheng greeted them warmly, introducing himself as Su Yunjin's classmate who sat directly behind her, and guided them to her desk.

Before the meeting officially began, Meng Xue, in front of Su Yunjin's father, pointed out Su Yunjin as "the one who sits in front of Cheng Zheng" and disparaged her academic performance, stating her science grades were "so-so" and Cheng Zheng's kind tutoring "wasn't doing much good." Moments later, Su Yunjin's father suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where Su Yunjin tearfully sat by his bedside.

Her father, once awake, expressed regret for putting pressure on her and reminded her of her future responsibility to care for their family. Su Yunjin, now resolved, promised him she would study diligently to secure a good future. After his collapse, Cheng Zheng, aware of her family's financial struggles, looked up her father's symptoms to alleviate her worries and offered to tutor her in mathematics. Su Yunjin accepted his offer, despite her earlier request for him to stay away.

Cheng Zheng teasingly reminded her of her previous stance but agreed to tutor her on "one condition," which he said he would reveal later. Years later, Mo Yuhua, now an accomplished doctor, received a phone call from Su Yunjin, still her close friend. Mo Yuhua recounted just finishing a surgery for a premature birth, expressing her dislike for the emotional family scenes that followed. Su Yunjin revealed she was going shopping for clothes.

Mo Yuhua, however, quickly deduced that Su Yunjin's true motivation was not just the upcoming wedding of Meng Xue and Song Ming, but to look her best for a potential reunion with Cheng Zheng. Mo Yuhua, understanding Su Yunjin's heart, wisely advised her to seriously consider her path this time, warning against repeating past patterns and wasting more years. Meanwhile, Cheng Zheng and Zhou Ziyi, now mature and charming men, were also shopping for suits for the wedding.

Zhou Ziyi, who had helped arrange the wedding, complained about the effort involved and joked about being among the few remaining unmarried men serving as groomsmen. On the day of Meng Xue and Song Ming's wedding, Su Yunjin and Mo Yuhua arrived. As Su Yunjin nervously scanned the venue, Mo Yuhua, seeing her friend's anxiety, mentioned that Cheng Zheng and Zhou Ziyi were groomsmen and likely already inside.

Mo Yuhua then spotted Zhou Ziyi, and a sense of awkwardness washed over her due to her long-standing, unrequited feelings for him. Zhou Ziyi approached her, complimenting her dress and remarking on how much she had changed, jokingly saying he might have fallen for her sooner if he had met her like this years ago.

Mo Yuhua, unaffected, retorted that he would have made her happier if he said she looked better in her doctor's white coat, adding that he "really didn't know her." Zhou Ziyi admitted it had been a long time and found it difficult to greet her without sounding awkward, to which Mo Yuhua simply replied that she had kept up with his news.

Zhou Ziyi attempted to call Cheng Zheng, but received no answer, commenting that Cheng Zheng was "not as reliable as me now." Su Yunjin, sitting alone at a table, still hadn't seen Cheng Zheng, pondering that perhaps his absence might not be a bad thing after all.
