Si Yuanlong easily wins a bet against Han Zhao and invites her to participate in a volunteer charity event. Though initially uninterested, Han Zhao immediately changes her mind when she learns that Ye Qian will also be attending. Ye Qian visits a hair salon to find Chen Zhi and informs him that the dismembered remains found by the police belong to his father, Chen Daning. Chen Zhi reacts with cold indifference, revealing a deep-seated animosity toward his father.
He describes Chen Daning as a man loathed by the entire village, noting that his only close associate was the mentally challenged widow of the late Xie Hanguo. Chen Zhi suggests that his father was likely just swindling the woman for the inheritance left by her late husband, an oil mill owner who died in a highway accident years ago. The widow has a reclusive, solitary son named Xie Wenle.
Back at the station, Jiao Lei identifies the vehicle used to dump the remains from surveillance footage. The van is registered to Li Dong. When the police attempt to apprehend Li Dong at a market, he panics and flees. His escape is cut short when Dan Qing’s car accidentally clips him, allowing the officers to move in. During questioning, Li Dong denies knowing Chen Daning but admits to an illegal business partnership with Xie Wenle.
Xie renders cooking oil from meat scraps provided by Li Dong. Li Dong explains he only fled because he thought the police were raiding his illegal oil operation. Leng Qiming leads a team to Shipu Village to find Xie Wenle. After a pursuit that leads to a mountain cave, Xie Wenle—armed with an axe and muttering incoherently—attacks Leng Qiming. The police manage to subdue him after a shot is fired.
Under interrogation, a motive for the murder is uncovered: Chen Daning had been extorting 30,000 yuan from Xie Wenle for gambling debts, threatening to report the illegal oil mill to the police. He taunted Xie with the prospect of being locked in a "dark room," a psychological trigger for Xie, who had been traumatized by such imprisonment as a child. To ensure Xie is not faking his mental instability, the police arrange for a professional psychiatric evaluation.
Meanwhile, a police dog leads the team to the backyard, where Chen Daning’s severed head is found buried beneath the floor of the very "dark room" mentioned during the investigation. In a separate development, Niu Bosheng visits the station to present Leng Qiming with a commendation banner. Having been cleared of the false accusations made by Wu Da, Niu is deeply grateful for the police's diligence.
Although Leng Qiming considers it his basic duty and tries to decline, Niu insists on the gesture. As one case closes, another opens when the body of a young woman is discovered in the Sishui River. The victim is covered in silt, leading the forensic team to theorize she may have been sucked into the suction pipe of an illegal sand dredger.
Ye Qian begins coordinating with field officers to track down modified dredging vessels that operate under the cover of night, using his father's connections in the local fishing community to gather leads. Later that evening, Dan Qing invites Ye Qian to dinner. During the meal, she brings up a promise he once made to "always stand on the side of light." Ye Qian is persuaded to drink a small amount of red wine, unaware that Dan Qing has drugged it. After Ye Qian leaves the restaurant in a heavily sedated state, the wine glass is surreptitiously removed to destroy any evidence of the tampering.
