Pei Qian sits aboard a private plane, listening to news reports about his conglomerate, the Tengda Group. The broadcast details his latest venture: the acquisition of a 1. 3-hectare vineyard in Burgundy, France. Media outlets describe Pei Qian as a legendary, low-key figure whose unpredictable business maneuvers are impossible to replicate. To Pei Qian, however, this vast empire feels like a dream—one that began with a very different intention eight years ago.

In 2022, Pei Qian was a struggling employee at Fuhui. His career there ended abruptly when his "Fuhui Job-Security Survival Manual"—a list of grievances against the firm—was discovered. His manager, unimpressed by his "active thinking," fired him without severance pay. While contemplating his future over a meal, Pei Qian witnessed a customer bullying a small black cat. He intervened, rescued the creature, and named it Yintang.

Unbeknownst to him, Pei Qian was being observed by Mr. Sima, the chairman of the powerful Jinghong Group. Seeing potential in Pei Qian’s unconventional mindset, Mr. Sima sent his special assistant, Xin Hailu, to recruit him. Pei Qian was invited onto a private jet where Mr. Sima offered him a bizarre investment: Pei Qian would start a company with one million yuan in capital.

If the company turned a profit, Pei Qian would receive only a modest base salary of 5,000 yuan. However, if the company lost money, the exact amount of that loss would be paid to Pei Qian as a personal bonus. Suspecting a scam, Pei Qian called the police, but they confirmed that Mr. Sima and Xin Hailu were legitimate. Realizing he had everything to gain from failure, Pei Qian signed the confidential agreement.

He decided to focus on the gaming industry, reasoning that failed games result in worthless code and total financial loss. Xin Hailu was assigned to the new company, Tengda, as his special assistant to monitor his moves. Pei Qian immediately hired his best friend, Ma Yang, a perpetual underachiever who had recently failed at running a relative's fruit stall by "rounding down" a customer's bill far too generously.

Ma Yang convinced himself that Pei Qian was a "rich kid" who had finally stopped pretending to be poor and eagerly joined as General Manager. To ensure the company’s failure, Pei Qian selected an office in the Shenhua International tower with a reputation for ruining previous tenants. He insisted on paying the full asking price and ordered the most expensive equipment available—executive chairs, sit-stand desks, and computers with high-end RTX 4090 graphics cards—to burn through his capital.

While he tried to give Ma Yang a 50,000 yuan monthly salary, Xin Hailu intervened, and they eventually settled on 10,000 yuan. Pei Qian’s next recruit was Bao Xu, a legendary "net cafe camper" who hadn't left his gaming seat since graduation. Bao Xu joined the team as a game tester. At the company’s opening, Pei Qian insisted on a yellow ribbon for the cutting ceremony, secretly hoping the color symbolized the company "going bust" as quickly as possible.

A month later, a prominent game reviewer named Teacher Qiao stumbled upon Tengda’s first release, "The Lonely Road", priced at only one yuan. The game appeared incredibly lazy; the first level consisted of nothing but holding down a key to drive in a straight line through static scenery. However, the second level proved to be a psychological nightmare, featuring illogical turns and no brakes. Fuelled by spite, Teacher Qiao and his assistant spent eight grueling hours mastering the mechanics.

When they finally cleared the level, a message flashed on the screen: "Congratulations, you've wasted eight precious hours of your life." Furious at the mockery, Teacher Qiao noted the creator: Tengda Games.
