Xu Yuetao (Olivia Gray), a concubine-born daughter, originally intended to fail the palace selection to escape her family’s control. However, due to false intelligence from her fiancé Zhu Chengjin (Jeff Reid), she unexpectedly passed. Once inside the palace, she endured repeated persecutions from her legitimate elder sister Xu Yuerong and the imperial consort, even being forced to eat alongside eunuchs. In her despair, Yuetao received help from the eunuch Jing Hongzhui (Lucas Jones). Using her resemblance to the emperor’s former love and her own cunning, she gradually gained favor, rising from a minor consort to imperial consort.
Along the way, Yuetao discovered Zhu Chengjin had long betrayed her. A series of devastating blows—including her mother’s murder and the death of her child—pushed her into darkness. Together with Jing Hongzhui, she orchestrated the downfall of the imperial consort, deposed the empress, and exacted revenge on all her enemies. Though Yuetao ascended to the position of Empress Dowager, she lost all family and true love. Only Jing Hongzhui remained by her side, and together they reached the pinnacle of power, yet remained trapped in the solitude and fate of palace intrigues.
