Recap episodio 39 di A Splendid Match
> Recap di A Splendid Match
The brutal battle at Tiger Roar Gorge ends in devastating silence. When Chen Yanyun and his remaining forces finally reach the site, they are met with a grim scene of carnage. Ye Xian’s soldiers lie dead across the battlefield, and the young lord himself has perished, his chest impaled by a spear. Moved by their complicated history, Chen Yanyun brings Ye Xian’s body back.
Gu Jinzhao, who has been waiting anxiously, feels a momentary wave of relief upon seeing Chen Yanyun return alive, only to be struck with profound shock and grief as Ye Xian’s lifeless body is carried in. Chen Yanyun, though wounded in the conflict, is treated by a physician who assures everyone that his injuries are not life-threatening. While Ji Yao keeps watch over Ye Xian’s body, Gu Jinzhao comes to check on them.
She reassures Ji Yao that Chen Yanyun has regained consciousness and is out of danger. Ji Yao then quietly slips away to leave her alone with the deceased. Left in the quiet room, Gu Jinzhao breaks down in tears. As she mourns, she notices several letters hidden inside Ye Xian's robes and gently pulls them out. Opening the letter addressed to her, Gu Jinzhao reads Ye Xian’s final words.
He writes that if she is reading this, he has met his end. He shares that his time at the border brought him genuine happiness, and reveals that a physician had long ago diagnosed him with a terminal heart ailment, giving him less than three years to live. Rather than fading away quietly, dying heroically on the battlefield was the honorable end he desired, leaving him with no regrets.
In a final touch of his signature playfulness, he notes that by dying, he has ensured she will never forget him, finally marking a victory over Chen Yanyun. He asks her to look after his mother, his strong-willed sister, and help prepare a wedding gift for the devoted Xue Qinglan when she marries, while also entrusting his beloved cat, Baopu, to her care. Soon after, the imperial reinforcements arrive.
Their commander laments their late arrival, wishing they could have saved the young lord, and urges Chen Yanyun to return to the capital. However, Chen Yanyun refuses. He explains that with Shicheng and Menyuan already lost, the barbarians are gathering more forces to siege Yi County. The imperial court must immediately dispatch its elite forces to defend the border, a task that requires a unified Grand Secretariat.
If Chen Yanyun returns alive, his teacher Lord Fu’s treacherous collusion with the Chunyuan Cult will be exposed, plunging the court into chaos and paralyzing military deployments. He concludes that the only way to save the realm is to fake his own death. Gu Jinzhao leads the somber funeral procession back to the capital. At the capital's gates, a grieving Old Madame Chen and Second Lady Chen are waiting.
The family's mourning is abruptly interrupted when the scheming Lord Fu arrives with a cohort of officials. Lord Fu hypocritically praises Chen Yanyun’s sacrifice and demands that the coffin be delivered to Xuanmiao Temple for public mourning. Recognizing his political trap, Gu Jinzhao fiercely refuses.
Drawing a dagger against her own neck, she declares that as a widow who has already lost her husband, she has nothing left to fear, and threatens to end her life on the spot if they try to stop her. Unwilling to face the public backlash of driving a loyal minister’s widow to suicide, Lord Fu relents and allows them to proceed to the Chen mansion. At the border, Chen Yanyun remains confident in Gu Jinzhao's ability to secure reinforcements.
Back in the capital, Gu Jinzhao recalls her parting moment with Chen Yanyun at the border. At that time, he had comforted her with Qingpu fruit from Pingyang Prefecture, and told her about a keepsake box containing his most treasured possessions hidden behind a painting in his study. He had told her that while he had always put the state first, this time, her safety was his only priority, begging her to live well.
Back in the present, Gu Lan and Xue Qinglan offer their condolences to the exhausted Gu Jinzhao. Jinzhao requests that her grandmother's family and her Fifth Aunt be invited from Daxin to pay their respects. Once they are in private, Jinzhao reveals the truth to Old Madame Chen and Second Lady Chen: Chen Yanyun is actually alive. The revelation brings immense relief to Old Madame Chen, who breaks down in tears of deep regret.
She laments how she always unfairly scolded Yanyun during childhood sibling disputes just because he was the sensible one, and how she constantly pressured him to secure his brothers' futures without ever offering him a single word of praise. Jinzhao comforts her, suggesting she save these heartfelt words to tell him in person when he returns. Shortly after, Jinzhao's grandmother and Fifth Aunt, who is Ye Xian's sister, arrive at the mansion.
Jinzhao meets Fifth Aunt in the study to deliver the heavy truth. She gently breaks the news of Ye Xian’s heroic fall at Tiger Roar Gorge, explaining that in his final moments, he wished to keep his death a secret so that his troops could continue to fight the barbarians under the banner of the Ye Family Army. As Fifth Aunt weeps in devastating grief, Jinzhao hands over Ye Xian's final letters, including the ones addressed to his sister and to the Emperor.
