Huo Linglong administered a dose of Linglong Honey to Zhan Zhao, hoping to ease his suffering even if it could not save his life. The poison, known as "Old Souls at First Glance," had already seeped into his marrow. Bai Yutang, still disguised as Ding Zhao Hui, stepped in to tighten the "Iron Shackles" acupoint technique on Zhan Zhao, successfully buying him two more days.

He admitted that while he could not cure the poison himself, he knew of a legendary medical family in Tanxi Town—the Jin family—who could. Bai Yutang urged Linglong to head for the capital immediately, noting that the item she carried was far too dangerous to keep on the road any longer. He convinced her to split up: she would deliver the evidence to the capital while he took charge of the dying Zhan Zhao.

Meanwhile, Shao Jizu’s men scoured local clinics but found nothing. To mislead the pursuers, Bai Yutang traded their horse carriage for a donkey cart with a local couple, instructing them to tell anyone searching that a man in white and a boy in blue had fled into the mountains to escape enemies. In Tanxi Town, Bai Yutang approached the two young sons of the physician Jin Zhenping.

He lured them in by offering to fix their broken kite and then kidnapped them to leverage the physician. Back at the Jin estate, the butler Xu An rushed to tell Jin Zhenping that his sons were gone. The kidnapper left a message: if the master refused to help a certain patient, he would never see his children again.

Just then, the donkey cart arrived at the gate carrying Zhan Zhao, surrounded by a massive pool of what appeared to be blood. Jin Zhenping rushed out to inspect the body, quickly realizing the "blood" on the ground was actually chicken blood. However, Zhan Zhao’s condition was real and dire; he had also been struck by the "Great Compassion Palm."

Jin Zhenping initially declared the man beyond saving, but the surrounding townspeople began to jeer, accusing the famous physician of being heartless and fearing for his reputation. Under the weight of public pressure and the threat to his sons, Jin Zhenping was forced to have Zhan Zhao carried into the estate. Bai Yutang sent another message through the butler, mocking Jin Zhenping's mediocre skills and demanding he use the secret Jin family medicine, the "Lament Pill" (Naihe Yin).

Inside, Jin Zhenping recognized the patient as Zhan Zhao of the Kaifeng Prefecture. Fearing the political trouble surrounding the man, he was reluctant to help. However, Madam Zhang, the widow of his fourth uncle, reminded him of their duty as healers and the immediate danger to the kidnapped children. The mention of the Lament Pill triggered a painful memory.

Fifteen years earlier, a boy in white had knelt before the Jin family for days begging for the medicine, only to be heartlessly driven away. Since the formula for the Lament Pill had long since been destroyed, only one pill remained. Using it on an outsider would surely invite punishment from the clan elders, but Madam Zhang stepped forward, offering to take full responsibility.

Together, they administered the pill and used the "Heavenly Root Moon Cave" needle technique to purge the toxins. Zhan Zhao was eventually stabilized and sent out of town in a carriage as instructed. True to his word, Bai Yutang released the children. The boys returned home unharmed, happily telling their father about the "uncle in white" who had played "Herb Duel" with them. Hearing this, Jin Zhenping was certain the man was the boy from fifteen years ago.

When Zhan Zhao regained consciousness in the carriage, Bai Yutang revealed he knew Huo Linglong was a woman. Their conversation was cut short by an ambush from Tang Sect assassins. Despite his own injuries, Bai Yutang borrowed Zhan Zhao’s sword and used his formidable martial arts to drive the attackers away. He assured a worried Zhan Zhao that Linglong was safe, as his diversions had successfully misled the pursuers.

As they continued their journey, Bai Yutang repeatedly tested Zhan Zhao to see if he recognized his true identity, even introducing himself as "Jin Maoshu." Zhan Zhao remained elusive, even when Bai Yutang teased him about his "Imperial Cat" title and suggested that he only joined the court for fame and fortune. Zhan Zhao countered that he served the court to fulfill the trust of a late friend and to protect a vital item that could destabilize the empire.

During a stop, Shao Jizu met secretly with the mysterious Si Ming to report his failure. Si Ming presented him with a masterfully forged sword and medicine for his wounds, explaining that the item Linglong carried was only useful as long as Zhan Zhao was alive to testify; without the man, the evidence was "dead." They agreed to prepare a backup plan to deal with the shifting situation.

Later, Zhan Zhao’s servant, Ming Zhu’er, found them after being directed by Bai Yutang. He reported that Linglong had safely reached the capital with the Prince. He then informed Zhan Zhao of a new crisis: the "Jinmao Rat" (Golden-Haired Rat) had recently caused an uproar at Kaifeng Prefecture. Because he couldn't find Zhan Zhao, the thief had stolen Lord Bao’s official seal and left a note demanding a duel.

Zhan Zhao, realizing he could no longer ignore the situation, admitted he had known his companion's identity all along. With the official seal at stake, he decided they must head immediately to Xiankong Island.
