The Moon Envoy intervened to stop the skirmish, asserting that the girl’s death was not the work of Hanshui Palace. She warned that He Bo already knew how they had infiltrated the embroidery shop and Zhongxiao Pavilion, urging them to return immediately to protect those they had left behind. Realizing the danger to Fan Zhongyu, Zhan Zhao, Bai Yutang, and Huo Longlong raced back at once.

While Jing Xingze and his men searched the area, Hua Chong took advantage of the group's absence. He tricked Fan Zhongyu with news of his sister, Yu Lian, before headbutting him and escaping. However, Hua Chong ran straight into Jing Xingze's assassins. To save his own life, he led the killers back to the hideout.

Zhan Zhao arrived just in time to save Hua Chong from Jing Xingze, but he was too late for the others; Fan Zhongyu and the clerk, Fang, had already been murdered. Overcome with grief and guilt for leaving them unprotected, Bai Yutang attempted to kill Hua Chong. Zhan Zhao and Huo Longlong intervened, arguing that Hua Chong must face a legal trial and remained their only lead to rescue Yu Lian.

Bai Yutang, disillusioned by the corruption in Xiangzhou, argued that the law was a hollow formality and that only his blade could deliver justice. The confrontation ended abruptly when Bai Yutang, exhausted and injured, collapsed. With the clerk dead, the Magistrate of Yicheng became the sole remaining witness to Liu Hongyi’s case. Knowing he was the next target for elimination because the capital intended to summon him, the Magistrate sat in his office waiting for the end.

Zhan Zhao arrived through a torrential downpour to confront him. Despite the impending danger, the Magistrate remained unrepentant, boasting that his corruption had secured his family’s future—something Liu Hongyi’s integrity could never provide. Under interrogation, the Magistrate revealed that He Bo, Jing Yi Ming, controlled Xiangzhou’s officials through secret ledgers of their transgressions at Zhongxiao Pavilion. He recounted how Liu Hongyi had been brutally tortured to death for refusing to abandon his investigation into Yu Lian’s disappearance.

Though consumed by fury, Zhan Zhao spared the Magistrate’s life, vowing to bring him to Kaifeng Court to prove that justice still existed. As assassins closed in, Zhan Zhao fought off waves of attackers to protect the witness. After the rain subsided, Zhan Zhao returned to the hideout and found a lotus-shaped ornament among Fan Zhongyu’s few belongings, intended for Yu Lian.

When Bai Yutang regained consciousness, he was moved to tears by the sight of the medicine Fan had been brewing for him before his death. Haunted by the memory of his friend and the grim deadline set by Zhi Hua, Bai Yutang struggled with his guilt. The following morning, after burying Fan Zhongyu, Zhan Zhao sat in somber silence, weighed down by the pervasive darkness of the world.
