A heavy rain traps travelers at the Shanbei Inn, where the atmosphere is thick with tension. Among the patrons are the mysterious Zhan Rifei, who watches from the second floor with his hat pulled low, and Huo Linglong, who is disguised as a young man. The focus of the room is Ge Yunfei, the Third Chief of Shengyun Stronghold, who is anxious to move a secret treasure despite the storm.

The silence is broken when assassins from the Tang Sect’s Wuning Hall arrive to seize the package. A violent struggle ensues, leaving the Shengyun men dead. As Ge Yunfei lies dying, he attempts to kill a mute boy traveling with them, but Huo Linglong intervenes to save the child. Though the assassins flee with the package, Huo Linglong realizes the boy is not actually part of Shengyun Stronghold and bears scars from previous abuse.

The Tang assassins soon return, suspecting the boy is the real carrier of the treasure. Huo Linglong mocks their lack of observation, noting the boy's thin clothes could hide nothing. The situation escalates when the Shengyun Stronghold’s First and Second Chiefs, Jiao Chaogui and Mu Xiuquan, arrive to find their brother dead. In the resulting chaos, the boy signals a yellow dog to bite one of the assassins.

Huo Linglong eventually reveals her connection to Linglong Manor, causing the Tang Sect members to retreat out of caution. Tensions remain high as Huo Linglong refuses to hand the boy over to the untrustworthy Shengyun leaders. When Jiao Chaogui attacks, a broken spear suddenly flies from the shadows, striking Mu Xiuquan dead. The fatal blow is a display of incredible redirection by Zhan Rifei, who used Jiao’s own sword to deflect the spear.

Terrified by the hidden master's skill, Jiao flees into the rain. Shortly after, the mute boy slips away from the inn, only to be captured by a military envoy named Feng Shao. Commandant Shao Jizu soon arrives at the inn to investigate the carnage.

He identifies the Tang Sect’s poison but is most intrigued by Mu Xiuquan’s death, noting the killer used "redirected force" to either hide their martial arts style or compensate for being too weak to use a direct strike. Shao Jizu orders a lockdown of all routes leaving Xiangzhou. During the search, Huo Linglong and Zhan Rifei are forced to hide together in the inn's cellar.

While hidden, they overhear the guards discussing Shao Jizu’s arranged marriage to the eldest daughter of Linglong Manor—Huo Linglong herself. She is visibly annoyed by the mention of this unwanted engagement. After the authorities depart, Huo Linglong—using the alias Huo Xiaodi—confronts Zhan Rifei. He reveals he recognized her "A Fleeting Glimpse" lightness technique and her divine weapon, the Yin Yang An, which is forged from Ink Fire to counter cold-based arts.

In return, she identifies his weapon as the Yanling Sword, a heavy blade forged by the legendary Zhang Yajiu. Though Zhan Rifei tries to leave to avoid involving her in his troubles, Huo Linglong convinces him to help her rescue the boy. The pair tracks the guards to a pavilion, only to find that the boy has been intercepted by the Sun and Moon Envoys of Hanshui Palace.

The envoys are threatening the child with "Bone-Piercing" poison to extract a secret. Zhan Rifei asks Huo Linglong to lure away a persistent tracker named Yan Ziqing while he confronts the envoys. Zhan Rifei engages in a brutal fight against the Moon Envoy, who wields the "Love Longing" chain, and the Sun Envoy, who carries the "Piercing Sun" saber. Despite being heavily injured, Zhan Rifei holds his ground against the Sun Envoy’s "Dragon-Slaying Coil." Exhausted, both sides eventually break off the fight, leaving the conflict over the boy's secret unresolved.
