Fang Muyang informed his parents that the newspaper was sending him to the epicenter for a reporting assignment. Though his parents were concerned about the danger, he explained that first-hand information could only be gathered on-site. He attempted to call Fei Ni at the factory, but since she was busy in the workshop, he left a hurried message with her colleague, Ms. Liu, stating that he had to leave immediately for the disaster area.
Upon receiving the message, Fei Ni frantically requested leave and rushed to catch the departing reporting team, which consisted of members from the newspaper, magazine, and publishing house. The bus had already started its journey, and she chased it for a long distance. Hearing her shouts, Fang Muyang urged the driver to stop and hopped off. The two shared a tearful, hurried embrace. Fang Muyang comforted her, promising to return safely before boarding the bus again.
Meanwhile, Qu Hua finished a grueling night of eight surgeries only to receive orders to support the epicenter. Concerned by reports of colleagues dying in aftershocks, he visited Fang Mujing with a signed divorce agreement. He explained that if something happened to him, he didn't want her to feel burdened. Fang Mujing was deeply moved but firmly rejected the idea, tearing up the agreement in front of him.
She told him that if the person she loved were injured, he would only need her more, and she urged him to stay safe so he could save more lives. On the journey to the disaster area, Fang Muyang opened a package Fei Ni had prepared with the help of her friends Lin Mei and Nurse Xiao Zhou. It was filled with biscuits, canned beef, fruit, and essential medicines.
A note from Fei Ni reminded him that many people were waiting for his return and that he shouldn't leave her to repay all those favors alone. The gesture filled him with a profound sense of having a home to return to. The disaster area was a scene of devastation. While the reporters were assigned to a safe temporary post, Fang Muyang felt that drawing pictures was secondary to saving lives.
He approached the commanders, volunteering his skills in carpentry to build emergency shelters and stretchers, even offering to help move stones to rescue victims. Similarly, Qu Hua requested that his operating table be moved as close to the victims as possible. During the rescue efforts, Fang Muyang and Qu Hua crossed paths. Amidst the ruins, they worked tirelessly by day and found brief moments at night to gaze at the full moon, sharing their quiet longing for their wives.
Back in the city, the lack of communication left Fei Ni and Fang Mujing in constant anxiety. Fang Mujing compared her brother to a "copper pea"—stubborn and resilient—to comfort Fei Ni. However, a radio broadcast soon reported a 6. 2-magnitude aftershock, mentioning that several members of the "Great Northern Wilderness Educated Youth Rescue Team" had been seriously injured.
Terrified, Fei Ni sought information from Fang Muyang’s Uncle Fu, who confirmed that Muyang had joined the rescue team with the army but had no further news. Unable to wait any longer, Fei Ni pleaded with Xu Hongqi to send her to the front lines. Despite the danger of ongoing aftershocks, Xu Hongqi eventually relented, moved by her determination.
Fei Ni’s parents packed a bag of food, and her father mentioned a bottle of fine liquor he was saving to share with his son-in-law upon his return. After a bumpy journey, Fei Ni arrived at the medical station. She searched through the tents, asking everyone if they knew Fang Muyang. Finally, she spotted him—covered in grime and about to head back to the rubble.
He had been injured while saving an older man who had been trapped for four days. Fang Muyang shared a heartbreaking story about a little girl who called herself a "little radish" while he sang to her during the rescue, though they ultimately couldn't save her.
When Fang Muyang tried to arrange for Fei Ni to return on a supply truck, she refused, insisting that as a woman she could "hold up half the sky" and would stay by his side to help. The rescue work continued for thirty-five days. Qu Hua returned home first, sharing an emotional embrace with Fang Mujing and telling her he had helped save 112 people. Soon after, Fang Muyang and Fei Ni also returned safely. Seeing the whole family reunited, Fei Ni’s parents were moved to tears and immediately began preparing a feast to celebrate their safe return.
