Following the advice of Fang Muyang, Fei Ting visits Lin Mei at the supply and marketing cooperative to resolve their conflict. To get her attention, he makes a scene by purchasing large quantities of fruit candy, fabric, rice, and pork. When they step outside to talk, Lin Mei insists that he must get his job back at the Publicity Division.
However, Fei Ting explains that he never felt like he belonged there, as he lacks a passion for writing and reading. He tells her that he is much more at home in the kitchen, working with his hands and dealing with the heat and smoke of cooking. Comparing himself to Fang Muyang, he argues that one can live a good life without a prestigious title.
Lin Mei eventually accepts the real Fei Ting, though she demands to take control of their finances and requires him to earn at least thirty yuan a month. That evening, disaster strikes when Fang Muyang trips over a basin while going out to empty footbath water for Fei Ni, resulting in a head injury. In her rush to take him to the hospital for observation, Fei Ni forgets to lock their front door.
Feng Lin, passing by on factory business, notices the open door and enters the home. She discovers a copy of the banned foreign novel "Pride and Prejudice" and immediately reports it to Xu Hongqi. Fei Ni is soon detained by the factory security section. Hearing the news while still at the hospital, Fang Muyang rushes to the factory to save his wife.
He attempts to take all the blame, claiming the books belong to him and that he hid them from Fei Ni, even signing a confession. Ling Yi adds that universities have become more tolerant of such literature. Worried that a public scandal involving a "bad element" would disqualify the factory from being named a city-level advanced production unit, Xu Hongqi decides not to fire Fei Ni. Instead, she issues a factory-wide criticism and revokes the couple's housing unit. Losing their first home, Fang Muyang and Fei Ni move back into her parents' house.
To avoid overcrowding the small space, Fang Muyang stays at his sister’s apartment, sleeping in the living room. Not long after, a magnitude 7. 5 earthquake strikes Beishan City, and the powerful aftershocks reach Jiangcheng, causing many buildings to collapse. During the disaster, Fei Ni manages to rescue a young girl. Fang Muyang uses the survival skills he gained in the Great Northern Wilderness to lead the neighbors in building temporary shelters out of scrap wood and oilcloth.
He even constructs a small, private tent for Fei Ni so she won't have to sleep in the crowded public shelter. Tucked away in their own small space, the couple finds a sense of security and intimacy despite the surrounding devastation. As the earthquake relief efforts intensify, the factory shifts its focus to sewing rescue tents, with Xu Hongqi declaring the production line to be the new front line.
The magazine office responds to the government's call by sending a team to the epicenter to provide on-site coverage. Given Fang Muyang’s talent for illustration and his proven ability to survive in harsh environments, his supervisor selects him for the assignment. The situation is urgent, leaving Fang Muyang with only an hour to prepare for departure. Unable to find Fei Ni before he has to leave, he calls her workplace. A colleague answers the phone, and Fang Muyang asks her to tell his wife that he has been sent to the disaster area to support the relief efforts.
