The next morning, Fang Muyang and Fei Ni were discovered sleeping in the factory office by a crowd of onlookers. Xu Hongqi was furious at their stunt, but Fang Muyang remained firm, shamelessly claiming that since the factory had failed to provide them with housing, they had no choice but to stay in the office. He declared that they would remain there until a unit was assigned.

Xu Hongqi, refusing to be swayed, ordered her assistant, Feng Lin, to throw their bedding out and called security to have them removed. However, the situation took a sharp turn when Fang Muyang recognized Feng Lin. He realized she was the woman whose home he had entered during a past storm to rescue her partner.

More importantly, he remembered that she had been living with a man without being married—a scandal that would ruin her reputation as a college-educated factory cadre. Using subtle hints about that "dark and stormy night," Fang Muyang pressured her. To keep him quiet, Feng Lin suddenly "volunteered" to give up her own housing unit to the couple, claiming she wanted to uphold the spirit of "hardship first, enjoyment later."

Xu Hongqi, relieved to have the matter settled, praised Feng Lin’s "high level of awareness." Feng Lin did not leave graciously; she vandalized the walls of the unit with oil paint before handing over the keys. When Fang Muyang and Fei Ni caught her in the act, Fang delivered a final warning: as long as she never troubled Fei Ni again, he would ensure his "memories" of her past stayed forgotten. Terrified, Feng Lin backed down.

Rather than being discouraged by the ruined walls, Fang Muyang and Fei Ni bought pigments and painted a vibrant mural of golden rapeseed fields under a bright sun. Fei Ni added a small poem to the wall, and for the first time, the two felt the genuine happiness of having a place to call home. Meanwhile, Fang Mujing and Qu Hua celebrated their wedding.

Marrying into Qu Hua’s high-ranking cadre family immediately protected Mujing from the discrimination she had faced due to her family background, allowing her to return to her research project. While Qu Hua’s parents were welcoming, his grandmother, suffering from a brain tumor that clouded her memory, called Mujing "Yan Yan" while giving her a wedding gift. Mujing soon learned that Yan Yan was Qu Hua’s former love and that she bore a striking resemblance to her.

Their wedding night was cold and filled with mutual resentment. After Mujing confronted him about being a substitute, Qu Hua countered by pointing out her own opportunism, noting how quickly she had used the Qu family name to secure her research position. They reached a bitter understanding: since they both married for practical gains, they should not expect love.

Despite the tension, when Mujing brought Qu Hua food and a change of clothes at the hospital the next day, he was momentarily moved by her appearance in a bright yellow dress—a color she had previously been too afraid to wear for fear of being labeled "bourgeois." As they settled into their new unit, Fei Ni insisted on buying secondhand furniture to save money for her dream of attending university.

Because the room was too small for two separate beds, she insisted on a bunk bed to maintain their agreement of having "no marital reality." Fang Muyang teased her but eventually agreed. They also purchased a large trunk to serve as a dining table and a desk that doubled as a nightstand. At the factory, Fei Ni faced social pressure from her colleague, Liu-jie, to provide wedding candy, which Fei Ni considered a waste of money.

She also found herself in a line for "contraceptive supplies" being distributed to married workers. Though embarrassed, she was warned by an older worker that "science is more reliable than luck" when it came to family planning. Later, Fang Muyang found the supplies in her bag, leading to an awkward and playful exchange between the two. Fang Muyang also visited his mentor, Uncle Fu, at the newspaper office to announce his marriage.

There, he met Ling Yi, who apologized for not visiting him during his recovery. Fang Muyang told her there was no need for an apology; he was actually grateful she hadn't come, because if she had, Fei Ni might not have looked after him, and they wouldn't be married. He made it clear that they were only childhood friends and that she should focus on her own life. Finally, as the couple finished decorating, their neighbor, Chief Wang, stopped by. While the mural was admired, the sight of a bunk bed in a newlyweds' room left the neighbors whispering that there was something very strange about the couple’s relationship.
