Fang Muyang brought home a 206 manual turntable, surprising Fei Ni with the elegant sounds of Mozart. In an era of scarcity, the music and a homemade paper lantern created a rare romantic atmosphere. However, concerned about the potential trouble of owning such a luxury, Fei Ni urged him to return it. Suspicious of its origins, she followed him that night to the home of Engineer Gao, a skilled technician from the No. 2 Electromechanical Factory.
There, she discovered they were clandestinely assembling a television set from a pile of parts and blueprints. Fei Ni decided to support their efforts, and the group worked tirelessly to complete the difficult project. Meanwhile, Fang Mujing prepared to move to Jiangcheng University for a research project. When she finally told her husband, Qu Hua, he was heavily intoxicated and pleaded with her not to leave, but he called her "Yan Yan."
Realizing she was merely a substitute for Qu Hua’s late ex-girlfriend—whom she strikingly resembled—Mujing was heartbroken. She left a photograph of the woman and a parting note for Qu Hua before boarding the train to Jiangcheng. Despite Qu Hua’s frantic search for her at the station, Mujing remained hidden in the carriage, weeping as the train departed. Back at the workshop, the homemade television was a success.
Fei Ni and Fang Muyang delivered the device to Chief Wang, whose home was immediately crowded with neighbors eager to see the marvel. Satisfied with the results, Chief Wang fulfilled her promise and helped secure Fei Ting a position as a regular cadre in the Publicity Department, finally ending his days of menial labor at the milk station. With a stable job, Fei Ting visited Lin Mei’s family to discuss marriage.
However, he overheard her nephew, Lin Jianshe, revealing that the family wanted Lin Mei to marry someone with better connections to help her brother’s career. To further test him, Lin Mei’s parents demanded a complete set of furniture known as "thirty-six legs" as a condition for the wedding. Determined to marry Lin Mei without her suffering further slights, Fei Ting promised to provide the furniture within a single month.
He used his life savings to source lumber from his former contacts at the farm, while Fei Ni and their father pooled their remaining money to ensure he could complete the task. In another development, Ling Yi brought books to Ye Feng, injuring herself in the process. Touched by her sincerity and realizing he had overlooked her while previously pining for Fei Ni, Ye Feng finally asked Ling Yi to be his girlfriend.
At home, Fang Muyang continued to show his devotion to Fei Ni by setting up a private "bathhouse" area with a curtain. Though Fei Ni initially insisted they maintain a polite distance to avoid further emotional complications, she was clearly moved by his constant efforts to improve their life together.
