Following the recent victory, the troops celebrated the successful battle. Duan Xu attributed the triumph to the strategy devised by He Simu, leading the soldiers to toast her. Duan Xu revealed that he had orchestrated the destruction of the Guan River bridge a day earlier, having anticipated an enemy raid due to a mole within their ranks. By calculating the enemy's mobilization time, he determined that the night of the operation was the ideal moment for an ambush.

When Commandant Wu reacted with fury at the betrayal, Duan Xu urged him to focus on the greater defense of Shuozhou, as the arrival of the Hulan commander, Awo'erqi, was imminent. He Simu consulted Fengyi, seeking to understand the nature of existence. Fengyi, whose clan lived short lives, described each sunrise as a hard-won blessing. He inadvertently mentioned that once He Simu gained her five senses through her "spell bearer," she would finally understand the joy of living.

Recognizing that the spell bearer was Duan Xu, He Simu tasked Fengyi with investigating Duan Xu’s past to give her leverage when they eventually exchanged senses. Regarding her duties as the Sovereign of Spirits, He Simu faced criticism from Fang Chang, who had been ordered to execute Shao Yinyin. Fang Chang argued that the act was unreasonable, but He Simu sternly rebuked him.

She emphasized that spirits, if left with unchecked desires, would descend into chaos, asserting that her authority was maintained through firm discipline rather than mere reasoning. As the new year approached, He Simu took Chengying to the market, sharing her stipend to let the girl buy festive items. Meanwhile, Duan Xu and his men received a shipment of grain from Marshal Qin, only to find the bags filled with husks.

Recognizing this as the result of court infighting—where officials aimed to prevent his successful return—Duan Xu chose to keep the sabotage secret to maintain military morale. He ordered the usable grain to be distributed to the civilians to calm the public and ordered the remainder sealed, tasking his men with ensuring the people had a peaceful New Year. He Simu observed a suspicious soldier delivering a letter to an encampment, which she reported to Duan Xu.

Shortly after, a fire broke out at the granary, set by He Yan, a former courtesan and native of North Chong who resented the city. As He Yan defiantly blamed the city for her downfall, He Simu, observing Duan Xu’s tightening grip on his sword, realized he had intended to kill her. However, He Simu intervened, seizing the blade and striking He Yan down herself, an act that signaled her own lethal resolve.

Throughout these developments, Duan Xu remained composed despite the psychological warfare waged by Awo'erqi, who signaled his presence with a mysterious black cat outside the city walls. He Simu continued to probe Duan Xu about his willingness to gamble his life, but he remained focused on his ultimate goals: the destruction of the Hulan forces and lasting peace for the realm.
