Shao Yinyin, a spirit from the Shanling Temple whose obsession with offspring has turned her into a predator of children, chases Chenying through the dark streets of Liangzhou. Captain Meng Wan and her Tabai Army patrol intervene, but they are no match for the spirit’s supernatural powers. Just as the situation turns dire, He Simu arrives. Her presence alone terrifies Shao Yinyin, who flees in haste.

To maintain her human disguise as He Xiaoxiao, He Simu quickly puts on an act of a panicked older sister. She scolds Chenying for breaking the curfew but embraces him, reminding him that she is his only remaining family. Meng Wan remains highly suspicious, questioning why a sister would let her brother wander alone at night.

Upon learning that He Simu and Chenying are the guests staying at the Prefect's Mansion, Meng Wan accuses He Simu of having ulterior motives for approaching General Duan Xu. He Simu playfully counters by claiming she fell in love with the General at first sight when he rescued the city.

She teases the captain, suggesting that since neither of them are noble ladies from Nandu, they are kindred spirits in their shared affection for Duan Xu, leaving Meng Wan annoyed and speechless. While the city remains under guard, an assassin infiltrates the mansion. Duan Xu immediately orders his men to capture the intruder alive, but the pursuit ends abruptly. Han Lingqiu, the defense captain of the Tabai Army, reports that the assassin committed suicide before he could be apprehended.

Duan Xu is visibly skeptical, doubting that a warrior of Han Lingqiu’s skill would allow a captive to kill himself so easily. This failure deepens the General's suspicion that there may be a traitor within his ranks. In the spirit realm, He Simu summons the Lord of Shanling Temple, Guan Huai, and the Vice Lord, Fang Chang, to answer for the chaos caused by Shao Yinyin.

It is revealed that the spirit had been illegally hoarding the spirit flames of six children, a flagrant violation of the 32 Golden-wall Decrees. He Simu is a cold and absolute ruler; she mocks Guan Huai’s long hair and dismisses his excuses about his age, reminding them that she crushed the rebellions of the 24 Temples before she was even a century old.

She leaves Shao Yinyin’s punishment to Guan Huai but orders the temple lord himself to report to Yan Ke for his own lashes due to his negligence. Duan Xu, having noticed He Simu’s uncanny ability to predict the weather, visits her to request her services as a weather observer for the Tabai Army. He specifically needs a strong east wind and snow for his planned campaign against Shuozhou.

He Simu agrees but insists on going to the city wall to "read" the wind. She continues her act of being a frail woman who is terrified of heights. Duan Xu, prepared for this, offers her a sedan chair or to carry her himself. She chooses the sedan, and once atop the wall, she describes the wind as "white cobwebs" weaving through the sky. On the wall, Duan Xu begins to test He Simu’s senses.

He points to his sleeve—which is actually blue—and asks if the wind is the same color as his "white" cuff. He Simu, unable to perceive colors, agrees with him. He then shares a story about building sandcastles by the sea as a child, claiming he learned that everything eventually returns to sand. He Simu realizes his true intention is to wage war on Shuozhou to force a peace.

Before they leave, they share a sugar figure of the deity Shen Shu that He Simu made. Duan Xu claims it is far too sweet, and He Simu, who lacks the sense of taste, agrees to hide her condition. Back at their lodgings, Chenying gives He Simu some Dingsheng Cake from a neighbor.

When Chenying notes that the cake is much sweeter than the sugar figure she made, He Simu realizes Duan Xu lied to her just to see if she could taste. She asks Chenying about the color of the General's sleeves earlier that day, and he confirms they were blue, not white. Realizing she is being probed by a very cunning man, He Simu summons Fengyi to investigate Duan Xu’s history.

She notes that Duan Xu’s supposed hometown of Daizhou and his upbringing in Nandu are nowhere near the sea, making his sandcastle story another calculated deception. Internal conflict arises within the Tabai Army when Commandant Wu Shengliu openly protests Duan Xu’s attempt to promote his own men. Wu Shengliu challenges the General to a duel to settle the matter. He Simu and Chenying watch the fight from a rooftop while remaining invisible to the soldiers below.

During the match, He Simu uses her magic to subtly sabotage Wu Shengliu, ensuring Duan Xu maintains the upper hand. As she observes Duan Xu’s swift and lethal movements, she realizes he is far more dangerous than he appears. His sharp eyes and keen ears are not the traits of a scholar from Nandu, but those of a man who has killed more people than any soldier on the field.
