Following the fallout of the rooftop incident, Lysen’s human resources department issues a company-wide announcement: Bai Liangliang is suspended from all duties, and Chen Xi is appointed to temporarily oversee Investment Dept 1. Desperate, Liangliang reaches out to Bai Muran for help, but he has already decided to stop being her stepping stone. Harboring his own ambitions to replace her, Muran dismisses her with excuses.
Chen Xi later visits Liangliang’s office to gloat, mockingly promising to be an excellent "stepmother" for the department while Liangliang takes an forced vacation. Meanwhile, Ren Jing meets with Rao Yuci and subtly suggests she should resign for the sake of the company’s "safety." Yuci counters that Jiang Dongchao actually needs new talent like her to break the current stagnation.
The tension is interrupted when Yu Peidong barging in to drag Yuci back to her desk, insisting she focus on making money. After they leave, Ren Jing warns Jiang Dongchao over the phone that Yuci is dangerous. Jiang, however, is intrigued by Yuci's boldness, noting that the human heart is even more unpredictable than the market. Yu Peidong is highly entertained by how Yuci nearly drove Liangliang to a breaking point.
Now fully supportive of her, he proposes they team up to take down their common enemies. He even suggests a secret code for their collaboration: if Yuci calls him a "total idiot," he will know it is time to act. On the golf course, Bai Muran tries to recommend himself to Jiang Dongchao as the permanent head of Dept 1. Jiang remains noncommittal and instead invites Rao Yuci to a quiet restaurant for authentic Jiangxi cuisine.
Over Nanchang fried rice noodles, Jiang reminisces about his past in New York before shifting to business. He reveals his plan to acquire Bosi Real Estate and hands Yuci the Linwei Alley Urban Project proposal. He offers a major incentive: if she completes the acquisition, she can lead any of the three investment departments. Liangliang is not without her own resources.
Miss Gao, Jiang’s assistant, feels indebted to Liangliang for helping her son with school and risks her position to provide Liangliang with a copy of the Linwei Alley project. Armed with this leverage, Liangliang visits Li Wancheng, promising she can handle Jiang Dongchao if she is reinstated. Li Wancheng remains skeptical, making it clear he only cares about results and that she must prove her worth before they can negotiate.
Seeking her own leverage, Yuci asks Han Congfei to investigate the relationship between Liangliang and Xian Pengyu. Han tails Pengyu for days and uncovers a mystery: while Pengyu holds no official title at Yuanjian Club, he owns a company called Yinyu Technology. The firm doesn't engage in tech but owns a commercial building that has curiously remained vacant and unleased for a long time.
Inside Investment Dept 3, Sima Yang rallies the team by explaining that the Linwei Alley project is the key to controlling Yang Jinwan, the head of Bosi Real Estate. The team is excited by the prospect of a high-profile project, and Yu Peidong decides to take it on for the sake of his employees' futures. However, Yuci flatly rejects the project during a meeting with Ren Jing.
She confesses she knows she was merely used as a "knife" to eliminate Liangliang and refuses to be a puppet for the company’s internal games. Her refusal leaves Yu Peidong bewildered and furious. With Xian Pengyu’s help, Liangliang discovers the biggest obstacle to the urban renewal is a property at No. 88 Linwei Alley, owned by her stepfather, Mr. Xu. Twelve years ago, her mother married the gentle Mr. Xu after her previous husband fled from debt.
Despite Mr. Xu’s kindness and financial support for her education, Liangliang’s heart remained hardened by her past. Fifteen years ago, a young Liangliang was consumed by jealousy over the wealthy lifestyle of her friend Zhang Xinyi. After overhearing Xinyi’s mother speak disparagingly about her family's shop and her mother's multiple marriages, Liangliang sought revenge by publicly exposing Xinyi’s private diary. That act of ruthlessness defined her character.
In the present day, Liangliang finds the frail Mr. Xu at a rehabilitation center. Showing no familial affection, she pushes his wheelchair to a bridge and uses a cold, threatening tone to pressure the old man into signing the house over to her.
