Life at Hailan University has officially begun. Tong Xiaole has joined the photography club and quickly become a popular figure on campus. Luo Ningzi and Chen Fan have started their university romance, though Ningzi is so dedicated to her cello practice that she rarely has time for dates. Qiao Mengmeng and Chen Fan attend a different university but frequently visit their friends.
While studying in the library, Chen Fan and Qiao Mengmeng are joined by Xiaole and Yi Lan, who discuss the upcoming Freshman Dance organized by the music department. The event is a traditional mixer that requires mixed-gender pairs for entry. Chen Fan is surprised to learn that Ningzi, as a freshman representative, will be performing the opening act, as she had been too busy to mention the dance to him.
Determined to secure a full scholarship, Luo Ningzi seeks out Professor Ye Mei. The professor explains that there is only one slot available each year and that the decision is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the student's overall performance, not just their grades. She advises Ningzi to participate more in extracurricular activities and the student union. Later, Chen Fan finds Ningzi in the library to bring her food.
After apologizing for being hard to reach due to her busy schedule, Ningzi invites him to be her partner for the upcoming dance, which he happily accepts. Meanwhile, Yi Lan finds Shan on the football field and asks him to be her date, explaining that she wants to avoid the jealousy of other girls if she were to go with the popular Xiaole.
At the same time, Qiao Mengmeng makes a deal with Xiaole: she will go to the dance with him if he helps her figure out Yi Lan’s true feelings. At the Freshman Dance, Luo Ningzi delivers a beautiful cello solo that leaves the audience, especially Chen Fan, in awe. Following her performance, Tong Xiaole is invited onto the stage as the top-scoring freshman who chose the Department of Photography.
During an interview with the host, Xiaole clarifies that while he does not have a girlfriend, there is a girl he likes, a confession that leaves Yi Lan wondering about the person's identity. During the event, a student named Xia Han from the Department of String Music approaches Chen Fan to invite him to a karaoke outing, but he politely declines, as his only focus is waiting for Ningzi.
As the evening continues, Professor Ye Mei finds Shan to talk, leaving Yi Lan temporarily without her partner. Qiao Mengmeng finds herself interested in a senior from the photography department named Chen Chen. Xiaole introduces them, and Chen Chen takes Mengmeng on a tour of the dance, where they hit it off and plan to see a movie together. This leaves Xiaole and Yi Lan to dance together.
They appear as a perfect match on the dance floor, and Mengmeng even asks Chen Chen to capture a photo of the two of them. After the dance, Chen Fan asks for more time together, and Ningzi suggests they meet for lunch every day, though her evenings remain committed to her music. As the dance concludes, Chen Chen asks Xiaole about the rumors of his million-follower social media account, which Xiaole modestly dismisses as an exaggeration.
When a sudden rainstorm begins, Yi Lan’s roommate leaves for a date, but Shan happens to pass by and offers to walk Yi Lan back to her dorm under his umbrella. Xiaole, who had also prepared an umbrella for her, feels a pang of jealousy as he watches them walk away together.
Convinced by a tarot card reading that Shan is her "Mr. Right," Yi Lan dresses up in a sophisticated outfit to visit the musical instrument store where Shan works. Xiaole tags along and spends his time trying to interfere, eventually suggesting that Shan might actually be interested in the single Professor Ye Mei to discourage Yi Lan's crush. The day of the specialized course tryouts with Professor Ye Mei arrives.
While waiting for her turn, Yi Lan notices another candidate suffering from acute gastroenteritis and kindly decides to take her to the infirmary. By the time Yi Lan returns, the assessment has finished, and she is disqualified for being late. When she asks for another chance, Professor Ye Mei tells her that while she has great emotional expression, her basic skills are still weak and she must practice harder for next year.
Despite the setback, Yi Lan remains cheerful when she talks to Xiaole later. She confesses that she is experiencing a racing heart, a feeling she associates with falling in love, and asks Xiaole how he recognized his own feelings for the girl he liked in high school. Xiaole confirms the feeling but remains uneasy, wondering who Yi Lan has fallen for.
