Eight years ago, a devastating plague ravaged the capital. Han Changsong, the Deputy Director of the Imperial Medical Academy, was falsely accused of treason over a single prescription. The Emperor ordered the execution of the Han family to the third generation, the razing of their ancestral hall, and the burning of their medical texts to extinguish their lineage. Amidst the chaos, young Han Yunling was nearly buried alive but was rescued by a mysterious savior.

Now grown into a skilled physician, Han Yunling learns that her brother (and last male heir of the Han family), Han Mo, is reportedly being held in the dungeons of the Jinglan capital and is gravely ill. Refusing to believe her uncle's claim that the boy is dead, she orchestrates a plan to reach the capital by disguising herself as a bride for the Jinglan Special Envoy, Zhao Gao.

At the border's Tianlang Pass, war looms as the Changmo general, Gan Yi, challenges General Xiao Chi, known as the "God of Slaughter." Despite suffering from a chronic ailment, Xiao Chi defeats Gan Yi in a duel. Gan Yi retreats, claiming he does not wish to win against an ill opponent or harm civilians. Before Gan Yi leaves, Xiao Chi warns him to tell the Changmo Emperor to cherish the upcoming marriage alliance to ensure lasting peace.

Meanwhile, the Jinglan Minister of Revenue, Fei Zheng, suspects the alliance is a ruse and hastens his journey to the pass. In the envoy's residence, the corrupt Zhao Gao is eager to "inspect" his new bride. Captivated by Yunling's beauty, he attempts to force himself on her before the ceremony.

Thinking quickly, Yunling invents a Changmo legend, warning him that any man who has intimate contact with a bride before the wedding rites will be cursed with divine retribution and misfortune. Terrified for his life, Zhao Gao restrains himself and proceeds with the formal rites. The festivities are interrupted by Xiao Chi, who arrives to arrest Zhao Gao for embezzling 800,000 taels of military funds.

Zhao Gao attempts to invoke the influence of his uncle, Wang Ruhai, but the disciplined Xiao Chi has him dragged away. When Xiao Chi lifts the bride's veil, he immediately recognizes her as his childhood playmate. He remembers a time when she stayed by his side when he nearly drowned, even though she couldn't swim. However, he does not reveal his recognition immediately, choosing to be cautious.

Yunling hides her identity, claiming she was a traveler saved by Zhao Gao in the desert. To secure her stay at the General's residence and continue her search for Han Mo, she demonstrates her medical prowess by identifying the hidden ailments of the General and his lieutenant, Xu Chengfeng. She notes Xiao Chi’s lifelong physical weakness and accurately diagnoses Chengfeng with a persistent case of constipation. Intrigued, Xiao Chi allows her to stay under his observation.

While Xiao Chi reminisces about their past, Yunling works to earn his trust. She provides Chengfeng with a pill for his condition and prepares a prescription for the General. During an acupuncture session the following day, Xiao Chi tests her by asking if she would save a child who wanted to die. Yunling denies her past but confesses a deep desire to see the prosperity of the capital.

Xiao Chi promises that once the wars are over, he will take her there himself. Realizing that Tianlang Pass is heavily fortified and requires a specific token to exit, Yunling attempts to slip away at night. She is intercepted by patrolling guards but lies her way out of trouble by claiming she is searching for herbs for the General.

She learns from her contact, Ms. Wu, that as a Special Envoy, Zhao Gao must possess a unique token that allows passage. Suddenly, a massive fire breaks out at the envoy’s residence. After investigating the scene, Xiao Chi realizes the arson was professionally executed by someone within their own ranks, suggesting a conspiracy. Taking advantage of the chaos, Yunling heads to the prison. She encounters a jailer whose son she had previously saved from death at the city gates.

Using the pretext of delivering a new prescription for the boy, she gains entry to the cells. Yunling finds Zhao Gao and questions him about the token. The cunning official realizes she needs it to escape and demands that she break him out of prison in exchange for the Envoy's token. Just as they strike a deal, Xiao Chi arrives at the dungeon and finds Yunling standing before the prisoner's cell.
