Su suggested that if Lu stayed out of it, he could finally have a peaceful life.
When Lu offered to take Su away if he stopped the madness, Su only managed a bitter smile, admitting that although he was the master of the valley in name, he was not truly in control. Disgusted by Su’s lack of concern for human life, Lu ordered him to leave. Afterward, Xin Mei entered to comfort Lu, and he shared the story of their past. Years ago, Lu had been a palace painter who taught the princes calligraphy.
He had saved a young Su Taiyi, a stubborn performer who was nearly made a eunuch and was frequently punished for his sharp tongue. Later, after being betrayed by Emperor Ding—the very man he had helped put on the throne—Lu left the palace with Su by his side. Recognizing Su's natural talent for medicine, Lu mentored him, which eventually led to the creation of Chongling Valley.
Lu gave Xin Mei three Gongshan Jade Tablets to replace the one she had lost, remarking that people only truly understand if a prize is a blessing or a curse once it is in their hands. Meanwhile, Lin Muhan's greed intensified. Suspecting Bai Zongying of stealing tablets, Lin lured him away to search his room. The search turned up nothing, and Lin was instead badly injured by a defensive formation Bai had hidden.
When Lin sought treatment from the physician Zhu Yu, his arrogance led to him being kicked out by the assistant, Huai Qing. Matters worsened for Lin when he discovered his own jade tablets had been stolen, leading to a heated, but ultimately futile, confrontation with Bai. Lu Qianqiao’s suspicion of Bai Zongying grew when he noticed the man wearing a dark jade pendant—the one Xin Mei had previously said was intended for someone else.
Xin Mei explained their history, noting that both she and Bai were born on the ninth day of the ninth month, making them "Heavenly Talents" according to a prophecy about a world savior. While Bai was considered a genius, Xin Mei recalled seeing him practice a single move over five hundred times in one night. Lu, unimpressed, concluded that neither of them seemed like a savior. To uncover the truth, Lu had Xin Mei lead Bai away.
As they walked, Xin Mei questioned Bai about the value of the immortality pill. Bai justified the Tianyuan Sect’s aggressive acquisition of twenty tablets as the right of the strong. When Xin Mei bluntly asked if he had murdered Elder Cai, Bai remained calm. Simultaneously, Lu infiltrated Bai’s courtyard and broke his defensive formation. The triggered alarm brought Bai rushing back, only to be easily defeated and brought to his knees by Lu.
Lu revealed the stolen jade tablets he had found in the room, including Xin Mei’s original one. Having recently confessed her feelings for Bai, Xin Mei was devastated to realize that her respected senior brother was a thief and a killer who had stolen from her. Lu offered the tablets to her, but she refused them. She realized that since the news of the pill spread, the valley had seen nothing but death.
Lu agreed, noting that while no one had achieved immortality yet, the pile of corpses continued to grow. Looking at the blood-stained tablets, Xin Mei questioned if the pill was truly worth the eternal bloodshed it caused.
