In 1997, the interrogation of Jin Manlang revealed a shady deal with a masked man. Jin was instructed to wait at the Qihuang Clinic—an unlicensed qigong center—on the afternoon of June 30th to make two people "disappear." However, Jin claimed he never intended to kill them; he only wanted to scare them into leaving Weiyang forever. He had waited on the 17th floor, but the targets unexpectedly went to the 18th floor.

Frustrated after waiting until sunset and unable to collect his final payment, Jin fabricated a story of a double murder using a bag of chicken blood and a stained cloak to gain status among his peers. The detectives also questioned Du Mandun, the resident of unit 407. A dedicated fan of detective novels, the old man initially claimed he saw nothing because he had fallen into a deep sleep after reading.

However, Ran Fangxu used his knowledge of micro-expressions to determine that both Jin and Du were genuinely recalling memories, as their eyes reflexively moved to the left while speaking. Eventually, Du Mandun recalled seeing a woman twice—once in a staircase corner and again while she was carrying an old man. He noted a specific detail: she had medical patches on both of her wrists. The narrative shifts to 2015, where He Yuanhang and Ran Fangxu returned to the now-abandoned Yuanlongli.

He Yuanhang, who kept calling Ran by the name "Han Ziyang," seemed deeply fixated on the past. In the vacant unit 407, they discovered a box containing items from the old case: a detective novel belonging to Du Mandun and a mooncake box belonging to "Xiao Huilang." Most unsettling was a missing person poster that appeared brand new, with fresh ink and paper despite the years that had passed.

While checking for a noise in unit 407, they found only a few pigeons, but Ran grew increasingly uneasy, feeling that He Yuanhang was prioritizing these old mysteries over Ran's current teaching curriculum. Back in 1997, Ran Fangxu proposed searching medical records for the woman with wrist patches, but He Yuanhang dismissed the idea, arguing such patches could be bought anywhere.

During the investigation, He Yuanhang took a call from his daughter, Xiaohe, and his wife, who suspected rumors that he was trying to transfer back to a local police station to avoid the dangers of the criminal department. Ran Fangxu used the distraction to get He Yuanhang to sign off on further investigative steps.

Later, while purchasing orchids to compensate Qiao Suqing for a broken window, Ran spotted a pair of "Double Fish" heels at a night market, identical to those worn by the missing woman. Following this lead, the duo met a woman at a hotpot restaurant who identified the person on the poster as "Mengmeng," a former colleague from a massage parlor.

She revealed that Mengmeng was a local named Xu Meng, who was known for her quiet nature and her devotion to her gravely ill father, Xu Zhihong. The investigation led them to "Muse Foot Massage," where Xu Meng was rumored to have worked after her previous workplace, Pattia, was raided. Fearing he would be recognized from previous police raids, He Yuanhang forced Ran to go in first.

The plan turned chaotic when Ran was mistaken for a lewd customer and splashed with footwater, but they successfully obtained a photocopy of Xu Meng’s ID. Upon arriving at Xu Meng’s residence, the detectives were met with the stench of rotting meat. After Ran picked the lock to gain entry, they found a meal left out in haste. Ran discovered an expensive dress from a high-end brand called "Baozi," which seemed far too luxurious for Xu Meng's lifestyle.

He also noted a bottle of Penicillin for her father's lung disease and recalled seeing the old man with a cigarette in security footage—a strange contradiction for someone with a severe respiratory illness. As they finished their search, they noticed someone lurking outside and prepared to intercept the intruder.
