> Resumos de Light to the Night
In 2015, at the Weiyang train station, He Yuanhang experiences a vivid hallucination of his apprentice, Ran Fangxu, leaving for a teaching position in Beijing. The illusion is shattered when he encounters Qian Dajun, a developer and former property manager of Yuanlongli. Qian is stunned by He Yuanhang’s behavior and bluntly reveals the grim reality: Ran Fangxu has been dead for twelve years, having met a tragic and brutal end.
The shock of this realization causes He Yuanhang to spiral into a frenzy before collapsing, leading to his urgent hospitalization. While he is recovering, the truth behind He Yuanhang’s condition is revealed to his colleagues. For the past two years, his daughter He Xiaohe, along with neighbors and fellow officers, had been participating in a "benevolent charade." Whenever He Yuanhang hallucinated Ran’s presence, they would stage fake cases—such as missing children—to keep him occupied.
Once the "case" was solved, they would "send Ran off" at the train station to snap He Yuanhang back to reality. This system failed when a real disappearance occurred at Yuanlongli, causing He Yuanhang to lose his grip on the charade. Upon waking, he finally acknowledges that his apprentice is truly gone. The narrative shifts back to 2002, a time when China was swept up in the excitement of its first World Cup appearance.
He Yuanhang is serving as a deputy station chief, managing the unrest following the closure of the Qingsong Cement Factory, where workers are demanding a year's worth of unpaid wages from the hidden boss, Wu Shanlong. Meanwhile, Ran Fangxu is a rising star in the criminal investigation department. He is called to assist with a difficult triple homicide at a roadside hair salon.
Despite a heavy thunderstorm and open taps washing away the evidence, Ran uses his "creative thinking" to track the killer through a drainage ditch. He finds a discarded, blood-stained raincoat with a missing button that matches one found in a victim's hand, allowing the police to lock onto the suspect in less than half a day. During this same period, a resident in Yuanlongli searching for his missing rooster, "General White," discovers a human skull on a rooftop.
He Yuanhang returns from training to find his jurisdiction in an uproar. DNA tests confirm the remains belong to Xu Zhihong, the central figure of a missing person case from June 30, 1997. Forensic analysis reveals that Xu suffered blunt force trauma while alive and was later dismembered. This discovery proves that the 1997 case—which He Yuanhang and Ran Fangxu had closed as a disappearance to avoid debt—was actually a homicide.
Feeling responsible for the error, He Yuanhang tries to take the blame to protect Ran’s reputation, but Captain Feng views the case as a necessary test for the young detective. He Yuanhang is seconded back to the investigation and finds Ran at the crime scene in a state of despair. Consumed by guilt, Ran believes his failure five years ago led to the deaths of the Xu family.
He reveals that his obsession with missing person cases stems from the unresolved disappearance of his own parents. He Yuanhang tries to pull his apprentice out of his self-loathing, urging him to focus on bringing the killer to justice. However, while navigating the site, He Yuanhang suffers a heavy fall, causing a panicked Ran to rush to his aid.
