In 2015, He Yuanhang and Ran Fangxu return to Yuanlongli, a derelict building complex that has recently become a trendy "urban exploration" spot for social media influencers. The surge in foot traffic has coincided with the disappearance of several children, including a boy named Han Zi'ang. While He Yuanhang searches for the child, Ran Fangxu is burdened by the past.

He blames his own handling of a case in this very building eighteen years prior for his decision to leave the police force and become a teacher in Beijing. He Yuanhang, however, dismisses this guilt, maintaining that Ran Fangxu was always a talented detective. The narrative shifts back to 1997, during the time of the Hong Kong handover. He Yuanhang and a younger, more impulsive Ran Fangxu are investigating a mystery at Yuanlongli.

He Yuanhang uses his experience to manage local informants, eventually tracking them to Jin Manshan (Mr. Jin). Despite his criminal background, Mr. Jin insists his organization has transitioned into a legitimate business entity focusing on public management, security, and beauty wellness. He Yuanhang remains unconvinced and inquires about the whereabouts of Mr. Jin's brother, Jin Manlang, also known as Wolf. Meanwhile, Ran Fangxu’s meticulous investigation leads him to the 18th floor.

While attempting to retrieve cigarette butts from a ledge as evidence, he accidentally breaks a window, injuring a young woman named Qiao Suqing. Feeling responsible, he accompanies her home to clean the wound. At her apartment, they share a brief moment of connection, and she gives him a pair of slippers to keep.

As the investigation continues, a disturbing rhyme about "eighteen pillars and eighteen heads" begins to circulate via flyers, warning of "bloodshed" for those who do not pass it on. Ran Fangxu hears children singing it and questions locals. One boy mentions seeing a man with a bag soaked in blood.

Security guards reveal that the top floor once housed a secret club shut down during a prostitution crackdown, and they show Ran Fangxu a hidden door leading to the rooftop, which was concealed to prevent intoxicated guests from falling. Simultaneously, He Yuanhang receives a series of urgent pager messages from a witness named Old Wang, requesting a meeting at "New York Harbor Room 407."

Upon arriving, He Yuanhang finds Jin Manlang hiding in the room, claiming to be a "gas company worker" to avoid suspicion. He Yuanhang quickly apprehends him, suspecting he was there to silence Old Wang. On the rooftop of Yuanlongli, Qu Dahai and his team arrive at what they believe is a murder scene, only to find the bodies of eighteen chickens with their throats slit. The owner, Mr. Ge, is hysterical over the loss of his livestock.

While Qu Dahai dismisses the incident as a nuisance, Ran Fangxu remains serious. He suspects the killer slaughtered the chickens to mask the presence of human blood with animal blood. Despite the skepticism of his colleagues, Ran Fangxu insists on taking blood samples for forensic testing. Back at the station, He Yuanhang interrogates Jin Manlang. Though initially flippant, Jin Manlang eventually cracks under pressure.

He admits to meeting a masked individual who paid him 10,000 yuan upfront, with a promise of another 30,000 yuan and high-end Flip-top Yuxi cigarettes. The stranger’s chilling instruction was simple: he wanted certain targets to "disappear."
