Ran Fangxu had previously conducted a silent investigation of the room Qiao Suqing rented. By simulating the crime scene, he discovered a disturbing detail on a lampshade in the bathroom. After spraying it with alcohol, traces of blood became visible, confirming his suspicion that the room held secrets. He meticulously preserved this evidence, keeping his findings hidden in a woodworking box until they could be found later.

Following Ran Fangxu’s passing, his colleague Zhao Jie went to Ran's home to organize his belongings. In the study, he found the woodworking box but was initially too grief-stricken to open it, keeping it sealed for years. Meanwhile, at the police station, Zhao Jie insisted that the primary credit for the recent progress in the case belonged to He Xiaohe.

He noted that he would soon be transferring back to a local station, while He Xiaohe’s career in the criminal department was just beginning, and she needed the record more than he did. In a search for information on Qiao Suqing’s past, the police called Xingwang Restaurant in Yuede City to reach her aunt. The aunt was defensive, claiming she hadn't heard from Qiao in five or six years.

She insisted she hadn't "sold" her niece; rather, she claimed she found her a place with the wealthy Yao family to save her from a predatory uncle. She even alleged that Qiao’s own mother had intended to marry her off during a trip to Mount Wu years ago, suggesting the family had simply been looking for a "way out" for the girl. Qiao Suqing was briefly released from custody, signing for her returned phone and bag.

However, before she could even leave the premises of the bureau, He Xiaohe intercepted her with a new arrest warrant. Faced with the reality of the situation, Qiao appeared defeated. During the interrogation, He Xiaohe confronted her with evidence Ran Fangxu had gathered, specifically an image from an elevator.

He Xiaohe revealed the truth Ran had deduced: the person being carried in the photo wasn't Xu Zhihong, but Qiao Suqing herself, proving that Xu Meng had been the one acting as the carrier. Initially, Qiao tried to take the full blame, confessing to the murders of Xu Meng and her father. She claimed she and Wu Shanlong had conspired to kill them, with Wu handling Xu Meng’s body while she dismembered Xu Zhihong at home.

She described carrying the remains to the garage in batches, admitting she had accidentally left behind an electrician’s bag. She even offered a hollow compliment to He Xiaohe, stating that Ran would have been proud of the investigator she had become. However, Xiaohe coldly told her she wasn't worthy of mentioning Ran's name. The interrogation shifted when He Xiaohe accused Qiao of a second murder: the death of Ran Fangxu.

Qiao was stunned and adamantly denied it, insisting Ran’s death was an accident, just like Yao Baiyuan's. He Xiaohe then presented road surveillance from the night of Chinese New Year in 2003, showing a figure dressed exactly like Qiao near the crash site. She also pointed out that the deaths of Yao Baiyuan, Wu Shanlong, and Ran Fangxu all involved construction sites and slippery grease. Qiao was visibly shaken, eventually breaking down and shouting that she had been lied to.

Realizing that Xu Meng had used the clothes she gifted her to frame her, Qiao revealed that Xu Meng was still alive and was the true killer of Ran Fangxu. The police tracked Xu Meng down to a riverbank where she was calmly fishing. When they arrived with the detention warrant, she showed no fear, accepting her arrest with an eerie sense of tranquility. Back in the interrogation room, Qiao Suqing recounted the true history between them.

They had met as pen pals in 1995, bonded by sharing the same birth date and coming from broken homes—one missing a father, the other a mother. They had hoped to bring their surviving parents together to form a complete family. Their plan led to a tour group trip to Mount Wu in August 1995. While crossing a narrow path, a thick fog rolled in. Qiao, suffering from the cold, fainted.

When she woke up, her mother was gone, and the Xu family had vanished. She spent years believing her mother had simply fallen in a tragic accident. The two women reunited six months later in Weiyang while Qiao was living at the Yao household. They were like two trapped animals; Xu Meng was being tormented by her father, Xu Zhihong, a gambling addict who constantly beat her for money to pay off shark loans.

Qiao recalled a specific Chinese New Year when they exchanged gifts, trying to find a moment of happiness. Qiao had encouraged Xu Meng to move in with her, but Xu Meng felt bound by her debts and her father. Eventually, the situation turned fatal. When Xu Zhihong discovered Xu Meng had taken out high-interest loans and threatened to kill "that little brat" (Qiao Suqing), Xu Meng killed him.

Qiao helped her hide the truth and dispose of the body, while Xu Meng lied to a neighbor, Uncle Wang, claiming the noise was just her chiseling a door frame for a wardrobe. It was during this time that Xu Meng revealed the darkest secret of Mount Wu: back in 1995, her father hadn't just watched Qiao’s mother fall. He had pushed her off the cliff while trying to steal her coat for warmth because Qiao was freezing. From that moment on, the two women believed they were the only family each other had left, bound together by a legacy of survival and blood.
