Helan Mingyu remarked to Xiao Chengxu that among all the royal brothers, the Emperor doted on him the most, a truth that held both in the past and present. As they selected horses, Xiao Chengxu expressed his admiration for a particular steed. Helan Mingyu noted that he had a keen eye, for it was one of Yonglin's strongest and most enduring horses, though exceptionally stubborn and loyal only once it recognized its owner.

She challenged Xiao Chengxu to see if he could tame it. Despite nearly being thrown, Xiao Chengxu managed to subdue the wild horse and playfully pulled Helan Mingyu onto its back for a ride. He then asked her to name it. Helan Mingyu, seeing the horse's untamed spirit yet great potential, likened it to Xiao Chengxu himself, a dragon at its lowest point, and named it Black Dragon. Xiao Chengxu, holding her hand, promised never to disappoint her.

During a class lecture, the teacher spoke of governing with virtue and the importance of history. Xiao Qihan, however, was engrossed in a book on military strategy, leading the teacher to question his interest in history. Xiao Qihan argued that with the ongoing war against Great Liang, it was time for his generation to fight, not to dwell on history. The teacher then asked Xiao Chengxu for his thoughts.

Xiao Chengxu eloquently explained that a prosperous nation relies on everyone fulfilling their roles, and that policy decisions, even on the battlefield, draw lessons from history. He emphasized that understanding the past is crucial to understanding the present and the enemy. The teacher commended Xiao Chengxu's insightful judgment, noting the striking difference in maturity between him and Xiao Qihan, despite their similar age, and urged Xiao Qihan to improve.

Later, Su Yuying deliberately bumped into Helan Mingyu, spilling a drink on her, then offered a sarcastic apology. Helan Mingyu calmly suggested they talk to resolve any prejudices, advising Su Yuying that constant anger was unhealthy. Su Yuying angrily refused to chat. Just then, Xiao Chengxu arrived, presenting Helan Mingyu with a bouquet of asters, a rare flower in Shengzhou that her own efforts to grow had failed.

Xiao Chengxu explained that he had gone to great lengths to find them, and his brother Xiao Chengxuan commented on the effort he put in for Helan Mingyu. Xiao Chengxu promised to take her to the southern mountains when the flowers bloomed again. Meanwhile, Xiao Qihan’s mother was furious over his poor homework, threatening him with kneeling before his father.

Ling Zhen'er, on her way to deliver fruit wine from Helan Mingyu to Helan Yunqi for Xiao Chengrui's cough, overheard this. The wine was a folk remedy Helan Mingyu knew, made with great sincerity, and Xiao Chengrui, though initially dismissive, promised to reward her for her thoughtfulness regardless of its effectiveness. Outside the hall, Ling Zhen'er noticed Xiao Qihan lingering, afraid to face his father. She teased him, comparing his stubborn pride to her younger brother's, which angered him.

However, when she revealed that her brother had been killed when Xi Qi destroyed Mu Qing Zhou, Xiao Qihan's demeanor softened, expressing regret. Ling Zhen'er then offered to help him, tearing up his badly graded assignment. She advised him to tell his father that the teacher had given an oral test on applying history to the battlefield, and to simply repeat Xiao Chengxu's earlier profound answer.

She cautioned him, however, that this trick could not be used often and that he must study diligently going forward. Separately, Su Yuying attempted to enter Xiao Chengxu's private quarters but was blocked by Ling'er, who explained that only Helan Mingyu was allowed in. Enraged, Su Yuying slapped Ling'er, complaining about how everyone compared her unfavorably to Helan Mingyu, calling her less beautiful, less noble, and less valuable, despite both having "Yu" in their names.

Ling Zhen'er stepped in to defend Ling'er, warning Su Yuying about hitting a servant assigned by the Princess Consort, which could provoke Xiao Chengxu. Su Yuying scoffed, believing Xiao Chengxu would never scold her for a mere servant, to which Ling Zhen'er retorted that Xiao Chengxu deliberately avoided her. Their argument escalated into a physical fight, with Su Yuying accusing Ling Zhen'er of being an "ill-bred girl whose family are all dead."

Xiao Chengxu and Helan Mingyu arrived, quickly pulling the two apart. Xiao Chengxu immediately confronted Su Yuying, accusing her of starting the fight and demanding an apology. Su Yuying refused, blaming Helan Mingyu for Xiao Chengxu's changed behavior towards her. In a fit of jealousy, she grabbed the asters Helan Mingyu was holding and scattered them, along with the bees Helan Mingyu had caught for plant pollination.

Helan Mingyu and Xiao Chengxu quickly used water to ward off the swarming bees. Xiao Chengxu sternly warned Su Yuying, explaining that Helan Mingyu had caught the bees for pollination and that she had brought this trouble upon herself by disrupting the flowers. Helan Mingyu clarified that she had splashed water on Su Yuying earlier to remove pollen, which attracts bees, but Su Yuying misunderstood her intentions.

Xiao Chengxu concluded by telling Su Yuying that since she now understood the situation, she should stop causing trouble. Ling Zhen'er observed that Xiao Chengxu was very thoughtful, always knowing what Helan Mingyu liked. Helan Mingyu acknowledged that she had given her heart to Xiao Chengxu and was waiting for him to marry her, though Ling Zhen'er reminded her that Xiao Chengxu was still in mourning for his parents for three years.

Helan Mingyu simply stated that she would wait for him. Two years later, Great Sheng achieved a major victory against Great Liang in a mountain battle, reclaiming two long-encroached regions. Xiao Chengyao was credited for forcing Great Liang's army out of Verdant Mountain Pass, and Xiao Chengrui decreed a special Lantern Festival celebration, despite one year of mourning still remaining. At the lively festival, Xiao Chengxuan kept Helan Mingyu company, while Ling Zhen'er went to buy fried chestnuts.

Xiao Chengxu, spotting Su Yuying, quickly pulled Helan Mingyu into hiding, leaving Xiao Chengxuan to distract Su Yuying. Su Yuying questioned Xiao Chengxuan about Xiao Chengxu's whereabouts, expressing her confusion as to why Xiao Chengxu didn't see her efforts to change. Xiao Chengxuan, for the promise of a valuable sword, led her away. Helan Mingyu playfully teased Xiao Chengxu about his undeniable charm. Elsewhere, Ling Zhen'er was solving lantern riddles when Xiao Qihan appeared, helping her with an answer.

They then playfully competed over other lantern riddles. Xiao Chengxu and Helan Mingyu went to the Moon God Temple to make a wish and draw a divination stick for their marriage fate, only to find it blank. Xiao Chengxu took Helan Mingyu’s hand and asked her to write their own marriage wish on the blank stick, vowing never to be separated and to be eternally entangled, with the Goddess of the Moon as their witness.

He revealed he had already requested a military position from Xiao Chengrui, intending to temper himself, achieve merits, become a great hero in her heart, and build his own manor. He asked if she would wait one more year for him to return victoriously from the military to marry her. Helan Mingyu readily agreed, promising that once he returned safely, they would write their wishes on the stick together.

Later, Xiao Chengxu told Helan Mingyu that he heard common folk women embroidered pouches for their lovers. He asked her to embroider one for him, despite her admitting she was terrible at needlework. After some playful teasing and a chase, Helan Mingyu kissed him. Xiao Chengxu then revealed his wish from the temple: for them to be together forever, never separating. Helan Mingyu, in turn, wished for their safety and peace throughout their lives.

The next day, Helan Mingyu eagerly searched for needle and thread to embroider the pouch, much to Ling Zhen'er's amusement, who correctly guessed it was a gesture of love for Xiao Chengxu. In court, Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan volunteered to lead troops against Xi Qi, who had violated Great Sheng's borders. Xiao Chengyao expressed skepticism due to their lack of battlefield experience, but Xiao Chengxu confidently stated that their Wolf and Eagle Battalions were well-trained and ready.

Xiao Chengrui agreed, appointing Xiao Chengyao and Xiao Chengtai as chief commanders, with Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan leading the flanks to attack Xi Qi. The night before departure, Xiao Chengxu gazed at a golden helmet, a gift from his late father, who had intended him to wear it for a victorious first battle. Helan Mingyu comforted him, assuring him his father was watching from Heaven.

Xiao Chengxu expressed his determination to win and return a great hero, hoping Helan Mingyu would wait for him to become a true commander before asking Xiao Chengrui for their marriage. Helan Mingyu promised to watch the moon every day and wait for his early return. The next day, Xiao Chengrui sent off Xiao Chengyao, Xiao Chengtai, Xiao Chengxu, and Xiao Chengxuan.

He presented Xiao Chengxu with the Thunder Bow, a personal gift, hoping it would aid him in protecting the nation. Xiao Chengxu, after a glance at Helan Mingyu on the city wall, mounted his horse and rode off to battle. However, Xiao Chengyao and Xiao Chengtai discussed their disdain for Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan, especially after learning Xiao Chengxu was investigating Su Qiu.

They secretly plotted to let the inexperienced brothers fall into enemy traps, using the chaos of battle as an excuse. As the battle raged, Xiao Chengxu's forces, moving swiftly, broke through Xi Qi's defenses. Upon hearing of the swift defeat, Situ Kun, the Xi Qi commander, angrily blamed Helan Wanyin, accusing her of bringing bad luck and conspiring against him with her sister, then violently struck her.

Meanwhile, back in the palace, Helan Mingyu diligently embroidered pouches with mandarin ducks and scriptures, hoping for Xiao Chengxu's safe return. Suddenly, a messenger reached Xiao Chengxu on the battlefield, reporting a dire betrayal: Fourth Prince Xiao Chengyao's Tiger Xiao Battalion had intentionally opened a path, allowing Xi Qi's ballistas to enter, trapping Xiao Chengxu's forces and blocking all escape routes. Faced with an impossible fight against the ballistas and no way to retreat, Xiao Chengxu found himself surrounded.
