Xiao Chengxu was consumed by despair, drinking alone while memories of his past vows with Helan Mingyu flooded his mind. He recalled promising to build a manor and marry her grandly once he achieved meritorious service, while she only wished for a peaceful and simple life together, without luxuries. Meanwhile, Xiao Chengrui visited Helan Mingyu, expressing concern for her being easily frightened earlier in the day. Helan Mingyu flattered him, comparing him to Mount Tai and herself as incomparable.

Xiao Chengrui noted her fatigue and informed her he had ministerial meetings, preventing him from staying. She promptly bid him farewell, emphasizing the importance of state affairs, to which he promised to return the next day. Ling Zhen'er then arrived, urgently informing Helan Mingyu that Xiao Chengxu was refusing medicine for his injuries and had locked himself in his room, even declining to see Xiao Chengxuan. Alarmed, Helan Mingyu immediately decided to leave the palace.

Upon their arrival at Xiao Chengxu’s residence, Xiao Chengxuan questioned their presence, asking if they wished to see his brother suffer more. Ling Zhen’er explained that Helan Mingyu had rushed out despite the risks due to her worry, which Xiao Chengxuan eventually understood, allowing her to try speaking with Xiao Chengxu. Helan Mingyu called out to Xiao Chengxu from outside his door, urging him to open it.

From inside, Xiao Chengxu coldly reminded her that consorts and concubines of the harem were forbidden from meeting other men privately. Helan Mingyu countered that rules were insignificant compared to his life, to which Xiao Chengxu retorted that a promise meant nothing to her, so rules would be even less important. He declared his unwillingness to see someone he considered untrustworthy and unfaithful. Desperate, Helan Mingyu offered to leave forever if he would only promise to treat his wounds.

His anger flared, claiming his life and death had nothing to do with her and that he would have preferred to die on the battlefield. Helan Mingyu then took out a knife, threatening to die with him if he gave up and degraded himself, vowing to remain a hateful presence if he refused to recover. Xiao Chengxu finally opened the door, but his words were harsh.

He claimed her life and death were irrelevant to him and pushed past Xiao Chengxuan, running out into the rain. Helan Mingyu quickly grabbed an umbrella and pursued him, telling him that even if he hated or blamed her, he must live. Xiao Chengxu, however, declared her irrelevant to him from that day forward, questioning if she was even worthy of his hatred. With tears in her eyes, Helan Mingyu wished that his words truly reflected his heart.

As Xiao Chengxu’s body began to give out, Helan Mingyu rushed forward in concern but was pushed away. Ling Zhen’er, observing Helan Mingyu’s own deteriorating health, helped her return to the palace. Back in the palace, Xiao Chengrui personally nursed a feverish Helan Mingyu, coaxing her to take medicine. He noted her past spirited nature and wondered if palace life had brought on her illness.

Helan Mingyu attributed her cold to the changing weather and expressed concern about passing it to him due to his busy schedule. Xiao Chengrui assured her and stayed until she fell asleep, instructing Ling Zhen’er to care for her and report any needs. Ling Zhen’er later cautioned the palace maids to attribute Helan Mingyu's illness solely to the weather, forbidding any mention of her being caught in the rain. Meanwhile, Xiao Chengxu's condition worsened dramatically.

Helan Mingyu, even in her sleep, cried out his name, waking in a cold sweat. Xiao Chengxu appeared pale and despondent, collapsing by the window. Xiao Chengxuan helped him back to bed, desperately pleading with him to take his medicine and not seek death, but Xiao Chengxu remained resolute in his refusal. Frustrated, Xiao Chengxuan sent a message to Ling Zhen’er. Ling Zhen'er arrived to find Xiao Chengxu still refusing food and medicine, drinking heavily.

Xiao Chengxu lamented that wine was more honest than people, and that after so long, a bottle of wine was better at warming his heart. Ling Zhen'er angrily confronted him, asking how he could disrespect Helan Mingyu's sacrifices. Xiao Chengxu questioned if Helan Mingyu married for his sake. Ling Zhen’er clarified that it was Xiao Chengrui who initially desired to marry Helan Mingyu.

Helan Mingyu had confessed her relationship with Xiao Chengxu to the Princess Consort, but no solution was found. When Xiao Chengxuan returned with news of Xiao Chengxu's supposed death and his golden helmet, Helan Mingyu nearly went mad and attempted suicide. Ling Zhen'er explained that Helan Mingyu then willingly married Xiao Chengrui to avenge Xiao Chengxu and save Xiao Chengxuan, as they had discovered Xiao Chengxu's defeat was a scheme orchestrated by Xiao Chengyao, who intended to kill both brothers.

Helan Mingyu kept this secret from Xiao Chengxuan to protect him, enduring scorn and torment from others. Realizing the truth, Xiao Chengxu was devastated, deeply regretting his wrongful accusations and acknowledging that Helan Mingyu’s actions were all for him. He blamed himself for not returning sooner, believing it would have prevented everything. He then wanted to immediately go to Helan Mingyu to apologize.

Ling Zhen’er stopped him, explaining that Helan Mingyu's current status made it impossible for her to leave the palace, and her previous visit disguised as a eunuch was already a huge risk. Dongming Palace was now part of the inner palace, inaccessible to him, and he shouldn't be impulsive and expose them. Xiao Chengxu expressed his frustration and inability to see Helan Mingyu, causing Ling Zhen’er to promise to find a way for them to meet.

As Ling Zhen’er left, she encountered Xiao Qihan, who noticed her red eyes and teased her for crying over Xiao Chengxu, assuming it was due to a one-sided love. He offered her a handkerchief, but Ling Zhen’er, offended, called him a busybody and ran off crying. Ling Zhen’er then sought out Helan Yunqi, confessing her unauthorized visit to Xiao Chengxu. Helan Yunqi was deeply worried upon learning Xiao Chengxu wished to die, having refused all medical treatment.

Ling Zhen’er explained that Xiao Chengxu suffered from a "heart sickness" that only "heart medicine" could cure, implying Helan Mingyu was that cure. After careful consideration, Helan Yunqi agreed to arrange a meeting, emphasizing the need for absolute secrecy due to Helan Mingyu’s status. Helan Mingyu's fever had subsided. Ling Zhen'er informed her that Helan Yunqi had consented to a meeting, under the pretense of praying for blessings.

However, Helan Mingyu was hesitant, preferring Xiao Chengxu to hate her if that hatred gave him a reason to live. Ling Zhen'er urged her, revealing that Xiao Chengxu now understood her sacrifices and wished to apologize. She stressed that Helan Mingyu was his only hope, and without her, he might be lost forever. Helan Mingyu eventually agreed to meet Xiao Chengxu, who appeared much thinner. He immediately apologized for his cruel words and the pain he had caused.

Helan Mingyu forgave him, though she admitted being angry at his self-destructive behavior and refusal of medicine. Xiao Chengxu confessed that no medicine could cure his aching heart, asking if he was meant to live an empty life without her. Helan Mingyu gently released his hand, acknowledging that they had no choice but to accept their fate.

She urged him to forget her but made him promise to remain the high-spirited Xiao Chengxu she first knew, for her peace of mind and for the sake of those who cared for them. Xiao Chengxu finally agreed, resolving to endure, believing there were no dead ends in life and that they would find a way to live on, refusing to believe this was their end.

Upon returning to the palace, Helan Mingyu felt relieved, knowing Xiao Chengxu had promised to live well. Xiao Chengrui presented her with a thoughtful gift: her cherished possessions from Yonglin, including a wood carving from her older brother and a horsewhip from her grandfather. He then took her to a horse track, explaining that he knew she felt confined and wanted her to ride whenever she felt bored or annoyed, despite it being against the rules.

He asserted that his words were the rules and vowed to do everything to ensure her happiness and bright smile. Helan Mingyu thanked him, but privately confided to Ling Zhen’er that while Xiao Chengrui's deep affection was rare and touching, her heart was given to Xiao Chengxu and could never accept another. She felt she had betrayed Xiao Chengrui's thoughtfulness. Later, Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan encountered Xiao Chengyao. Xiao Chengxuan noted Xiao Chengxu's improved complexion. Xiao Chengxu then directly confronted Xiao Chengyao, grabbing his collar and demanding how he would take responsibility for the soldiers who died unjustly because of his scheme.
