Helan Wanyin's heart was completely shattered, confessing that her dreams and heart were broken, leaving her with only cold, empty despair. Helan Mingyu, unable to understand, pointed out that Xiao Chengrui had genuine affection for Helan Wanyin, and their struggles should have ended with a new beginning of happiness. But Helan Wanyin retorted bitterly, believing her joy over her son Qiheng, which she saw as Heaven's gift, had ultimately ended in vain.

She declared that everything was Helan Mingyu's fault, expressing immense hatred and questioning when their lifelong battle would finally end, accusing Helan Mingyu of destroying everything she had. As the poison took effect, Helan Wanyin began hallucinating about Qiheng's return, while Helan Mingyu pleaded with her to calm down and realize her delusion. Shortly after, both women collapsed from the poison, Helan Mingyu vomiting blood and losing consciousness, followed by Helan Wanyin.

An imperial physician informed Helan Yunqi that although the poison had been cleared, the women's lives were still in danger. He revealed that the Imperial Physician's secret warehouse held a powerful cinnabar pill, which could be brewed into a restorative soup, but its use required Xiao Chengrui's personal verbal decree. With only ten days to half a month left for both women, Helan Yunqi worried they wouldn't survive long enough for Xiao Chengrui to return from the war.

Helan Wanyin awoke, but Helan Mingyu remained unconscious. Helan Yunqi gave Helan Wanyin a hateful glance before rushing to Helan Mingyu's side, where Ling Zhen'er tearfully begged her to seek justice for Consort Xian. Helan Yunqi promised to report the truth to Xiao Chengrui, but Helan Wanyin seemed oblivious. Helan Yunqi pondered how to convey the gravity of the situation to Xiao Chengrui. Ling Zhen'er questioned if he would truly abandon the war to return and save them.

While Helan Yunqi worried about disrupting the war effort, she acknowledged that Helan Wanyin and Helan Mingyu couldn't wait any longer. Ling Zhen'er suggested enlisting Xiao Chengxu, believing he understood the military situation and could manage Xiao Chengrui's temperament. Helan Yunqi, however, was apprehensive, fearing Xiao Chengxu might exploit the situation against Xiao Chengrui, given their past grievances.

Ling Zhen'er countered that Xiao Chengxu was a principled man who acted honorably and would not betray the country, especially since the matter also concerned Helan Mingyu. Convinced by Ling Zhen'er's arguments, Helan Yunqi decided to write a letter to Xiao Chengxu, but she only informed him of Helan Wanyin's poisoning, not Helan Mingyu's. Xiao Chengxu received the urgent message from the palace regarding the Noble Consort's critical condition, noting that only His Majesty could save her.

He mused on Xiao Chengrui's past adoration for Helan Wanyin, yet questioned why Helan Yunqi would send the letter to him, wondering if it was Helan Mingyu's idea. He reflected on how Xiao Chengrui had once been willing to let Helan Mingyu die, and now another life-or-death situation had arisen, pondering if Xiao Chengrui would again disappoint those he loved.

Xiao Chengxu later approached Xiao Chengrui in the military camp, revealing the urgent news about Helan Wanyin's poisoning and presenting Helan Yunqi's handwritten letter as proof. He implored Xiao Chengrui to return and save her, highlighting her worsening condition and the despair in the palace. Xiao Chengrui, however, hesitated, expressing his concern for the country's territory and his soldiers' morale.

He stated that leaving the front lines for personal reasons would be a dereliction of duty and a stain on his reputation, ultimately choosing to stay. Xiao Chengxu was deeply disheartened, drawing a parallel to when Helan Mingyu did not have to be sacrificed, implying Xiao Chengrui had made similar choices before.

Xiao Chengrui, lost in thought, acknowledged his past regrets, admitting he could protect the land but not a person's heart, and that perhaps from that point on, things were irreversibly changed. He then dismissed Xiao Chengxu. Unyielding, Xiao Chengxu proposed a plan that would allow Xiao Chengrui to return to the capital without alarming the army.

He offered to risk his life to keep the Emperor's absence a secret, requesting that Xiao Chengrui leave his military token and seal, along with a handwritten letter, to temporarily place the Dragon Battalion under Xiao Chengxu's command. Xiao Chengrui was initially wary of entrusting such authority to Xiao Chengxu.

To assure him, Xiao Chengxu dramatically broke an arrow, swearing that if even a hint of Xiao Chengrui's return leaked out and damaged his honor, he would be willing to be destroyed just like the arrow. Convinced by Xiao Chengxu's earnestness and desperate to save Helan Wanyin, Xiao Chengrui finally agreed. He entrusted Xiao Chengxu with the entire army and his battle plans, ordering him to make no mistakes until his return.

Xiao Chengxu promptly had a fast horse and guards prepared for Xiao Chengrui's departure. Meanwhile, back in the palace, Helan Mingyu lay unconscious, too weak to take medicine, her condition rapidly deteriorating. Ling Zhen'er desperately urged her to hold on, hoping Xiao Chengxu's efforts would bring Xiao Chengrui back to save her. In another chamber, Helan Wanyin, in a daze, recited a poignant poem about separation and sorrow.

Xiao Chengxu hoped that Xiao Chengrui was not entirely heartless and would successfully save Helan Wanyin. Soon after, Xiao Chengxuan intercepted a secret military report detailing Great Liang's reinforcements and a plan by traitor Hong Guangzhi to steal their supplies. Xiao Chengxuan suggested informing Xiao Chengrui, but Xiao Chengxu, maintaining the deception, claimed Xiao Chengrui had a severe cold and was in isolation, with all military decisions now falling to him.

Xiao Qihan, suspicious, confronted Xiao Chengxu, demanding to see his father. Xiao Chengxu presented Xiao Chengrui's military seal, warning Xiao Qihan against disobeying a military decree. When Xiao Qihan insisted, Dragon Battalion guards barred him from entering. To manage the situation, Xiao Chengxu then gave Xiao Qihan a handwritten decree from Xiao Chengrui, ordering him to guard newly arrived provisions. Later, Xiao Chengxuan discovered that Xiao Chengrui was no longer in the camp.

Xiao Chengxu then revealed the truth about Xiao Chengrui's secret return to save Helan Wanyin. Xiao Chengxuan, seeing an opportunity, proposed leading a battalion to intercept and kill Xiao Chengrui before he reached the capital. Xiao Chengxu vehemently forbade it, explaining that such an act would lead to Helan Wanyin's death, cause chaos in their army, and endanger the common people.

He insisted that he always acted honorably and would not gamble with soldiers' lives or the safety of the populace for personal vengeance against Xiao Chengrui, reiterating that their grudge would have to wait. He then issued a command to Xiao Chengxuan, ordering him to lead vanguard troops to ambush Great Liang's reinforcements under the cover of night. Back in the palace, Helan Wanyin awakened in darkness and realized her vision was failing; she was going blind.

Resigned to her fate, she expressed that if she died, she could finally be reunited with her child. Her only remaining wish was to see Xiao Chengrui one last time, believing he might return for her. She asked her maid, Wen'er, to help her dress beautifully, wanting Xiao Chengrui to remember her at her best. However, as she looked into the mirror, she saw only darkness.

Meanwhile, Consort Hui and Su Yuying maliciously gossiped about Helan Wanyin's impending death and her dragging Helan Mingyu down with her. In Helan Mingyu's chamber, her condition worsened as she vomited blood, and imperial physicians declared they could do no more. Ling Zhen'er desperately cried over the unconscious Helan Mingyu, urging her to live for her young son, Qiyuan. Just then, news spread that Xiao Chengrui had returned to the palace.

Upon his return, Xiao Chengrui was informed that Helan Mingyu had also been poisoned. Helan Yunqi met him, explaining that she had already ordered the precious cinnabar pill to be prepared. However, an imperial physician interrupted, confessing that he had miscalculated; there was only enough potent cinnabar to make one dose of the medicinal soup, meaning only one of the consorts could be saved. Faced with this agonizing choice, Xiao Chengrui hesitated for a long moment.

Helan Yunqi tearfully pleaded for Consort Xian (Helan Mingyu), emphasizing her innocence. After a difficult internal struggle, Xiao Chengrui ordered everyone to Yong Ning Hall, Helan Mingyu's residence. Meanwhile, Helan Wanyin, adorned with the hairpin Xiao Chengrui had gifted her when she was made Noble Consort, eagerly awaited his arrival. Her maid then delivered the devastating news: Xiao Chengrui had indeed returned, but the elixir could only save one person, and he had chosen to save Consort Xian (Helan Mingyu).

Helan Wanyin was once again consumed by madness, clutching her head and refusing to believe it, insisting that she had to wait for him to come. In Yong Ning Hall, Ling Zhen'er wept over the unconscious Helan Mingyu, reminiscing about their difficult but simpler days at the temporary imperial palace, where despite the hardships, they didn't have to constantly guard against those closest to them.
