Late at night, Helan Mingyu found Xiao Chengxu, who was in mourning. He was sitting on the stairs, seeking to calm himself, but his forehead was burning with fever. He ignored her concern and asked her to drink with him. Helan Mingyu agreed, saying that drinking together was better than him suffering alone. Xiao Chengxu soon fell asleep, exhausted from the events since returning from Yonglin.
Helan Mingyu then asked Xiao Chengxuan to keep vigil by Consort Mu's coffin, while she looked after Xiao Chengxu, who called out for Consort Mu in his sleep. The next morning, Xiao Chengxu woke to find a letter from Helan Mingyu urging him to eat. She then entered and expressed concern that he hadn't touched the soup she left for him, but he assured her he was feeling much better and thanked her.
Meanwhile, Xiao Qihan, Xiao Chengrui's eldest son, noticed that several royal uncles had arrived, confirming his father's prediction that they were eager to act. Prince of Han, Xiao Chengyao, and Prince of Wei, Xiao Chengtai, were among those urging Xiao Chengrui to accept the throne. He feigned reluctance, but they insisted, eventually leading him to the Great Hall.
In the Great Hall, Prince of Zheng, Xiao Chengli, along with Xiao Chengyao and Xiao Chengtai, formally supported Xiao Chengrui's ascension to the throne. Xiao Chengrui again pretended to be humble, but the three princes swore their unwavering loyalty and assistance, pressing him to accept. Left with no choice, Xiao Chengrui finally agreed.
During this period, Helan Mingyu had been a constant support for Xiao Chengxu, and he was grateful for her company, admitting he wouldn't have known how to cope otherwise. As Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan escorted Helan Mingyu out of the palace, they encountered Xiao Qihan, who excitedly informed them that the royal uncles had nominated his father to be the king, and Xiao Chengrui had accepted.
This news stunned Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan, realizing their Third Royal Brother would now claim the throne. Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan visited Xiao Chengli to inquire about Consort Mu's burial. Xiao Chengli revealed that Consort Mu's only last words were for them to be well taken care of. Xiao Chengxu then asked about Xiao Chengrui becoming the new king.
Xiao Chengxuan, agitated, questioned if his Royal Father, Xiao Shangyuan, had left a last will and why Xiao Chengli, being the eldest, wasn't chosen. Xiao Chengli quickly interrupted him, sternly explaining that Xiao Chengrui had numerous military achievements and his ascension was a collective decision made for the future of Great Sheng. Deciding to hear it directly from Xiao Chengrui, the brothers sought him out.
They instead met Helan Yunqi, who informed them that Xiao Chengrui was at the military barracks. As Helan Yunqi had always treated them like her own younger brothers, Xiao Chengxu openly expressed his feelings of injustice and sorrow. Helan Yunqi solemnly reassured them that Xiao Chengrui would never harbor any ill will towards them, and Xiao Chengxu believed her. Xiao Chengxuan, however, remained furious, convinced that if Xiao Chengrui took the throne, he was responsible for Consort Mu's death.
Xiao Chengxu suggested that Xiao Chengrui might have been genuinely compelled by popular demand. He pointed out their current lack of power, stating that any rash action would not only cost them their remaining troops but also endanger their lives. Xiao Chengxu affirmed to Xiao Chengxuan that this matter would not be left unresolved, but they needed time to investigate thoroughly and strengthen themselves.
On the day of Consort Mu's interment, Xiao Chengrui attended the ceremony, even though custom dictated he should not, given his impending ascension as the new king. Xiao Chengrui acknowledged Xiao Chengxu's potential doubts, suggesting that Royal Father might have favored Xiao Chengxu for the throne. Xiao Chengxu immediately denied this, humbly stating his youth and inexperience made him unsuitable, and that Royal Father would not have had such intentions.
Xiao Chengrui then confessed his initial reluctance to accept the throne, but explained that after Royal Father's death, the nation could not be without a leader, and with the persistent urging of the royal brothers and ministers, he felt compelled to shoulder the heavy burden. He spoke of the perilous state of Great Sheng, facing threats from Great Liang and Xiqi, and a fragile alliance with Yonglin, portraying the throne not as power but as an immense responsibility.
Expressing his distress over the growing animosity between them, he presented Xiao Chengxu with a dagger, daring him to strike if he suspected Xiao Chengrui of involvement in Consort Mu's death. Xiao Chengxu quickly refused, affirming his trust and denying any ill will. Xiao Chengrui reiterated his desire for unity, urging Xiao Chengxu to let go of any lingering grievances.
He declared that apart from Xiao Chengyao and Xiao Chengtai, Xiao Chengxu was the brother he trusted most, expressing his hope that both Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan would achieve great feats and contribute to Great Sheng's prosperity. Xiao Chengxu was left pondering whether Xiao Chengrui's gesture with the dagger was a sign of profound calculation or genuine transparency.
He remembered the kindness shown to them by Xiao Chengrui and Helan Yunqi since childhood, making it difficult to accuse his brother without concrete proof. He refused to wrongly accuse a good person, especially his own royal brother. He realized that everyone close to Royal Father and Consort Mu had died, except Su Qiu, whom he suspected had fled with a secret. Soon after, Xiao Chengrui officially ascended the throne.
During the ceremony, he declared his intent to expand Great Sheng and confront Great Liang. Xiao Chengxu was conferred the title of Prince of Yan and bestowed a three-tasseled coronet, while Xiao Chengxuan was made Prince of Yu. Xiao Chengxu's search for Su Qiu yielded no results; her hometown had been burned down, and her relatives and neighbors had vanished overnight. This chain of coincidences confirmed his suspicion that someone was deliberately obstructing their investigation.
Xiao Chengxuan then informed Xiao Chengxu that Xiao Chengrui had ordered them to move into the palace. Since neither of them was old enough to establish their own manors, Xiao Chengrui arranged for them to reside in Dongming Court under Helan Yunqi's care. Xiao Chengxuan grumbled, convinced that Xiao Chengrui simply wanted to keep them under close surveillance. Helan Yunqi warmly welcomed them to Dongming Court, which she personally oversaw to ensure their comfort.
She explained that Xiao Chengrui had great expectations for them and intended to rigorously train them, warning them not to complain, though she promised an abundance of food and drink. Xiao Chengxu reminded Xiao Chengxuan to endure and be patient. Later, Helan Mingyu was skillfully using a slingshot to knock down wild fruits when Xiao Chengxu surprised her. She playfully hit him with a slingshot pebble, then took his hand, inviting him for tea.
She mentioned Helan Yunqi's meticulous preparation of their living quarters. Expressing her concern for Xiao Chengxu's recent travels, she advised him to maintain hope and purpose, even if he didn't have all the answers. As Xiao Chengxu ate some sweet cake, he choked, and Helan Mingyu quickly offered him tea, their gazes meeting in a moment of intimacy. Just then, Princess Yuying, on her way to deliver a housewarming gift to Xiao Chengxu, saw them.
Annoyed, she deliberately bumped into Helan Mingyu, causing her own prized glass ornament to shatter, then falsely accused Helan Mingyu. Xiao Chengxu immediately defended Helan Mingyu, offered Princess Yuying a replacement ornament, and dismissed her. He then took Helan Mingyu to the stables to pick a new horse, recalling how Xiao Chengrui had taught him to ride and his deep understanding of Xiao Chengxu's preferences when it came to horses.
