As Madam Ji prepares to return to Tongzhou, she offers Gu Jinzhao a final warning, noting that life in the capital is far more taxing than in her hometown. She urges Jinzhao to remain sensible and never hesitate to send word if she faces hardships she cannot carry alone. Meanwhile, within the Gu household, Lady Song and Gu Lan are embittered by the budget for Gu Lan’s upcoming coming-of-age ceremony.

Despite Gu Lan’s maternal family holding a fourth-rank official status, the common treasury has only allotted two hundred taels for the event. Gu Lan is deeply resentful, knowing that Jinzhao’s own ceremony cost ten thousand taels, funded entirely by the wealthy Ji family. When a messenger from the Marquis of Changxing arrives to deliver an invitation for Jinzhao to dine at Linxia Zhai, Gu Lan intercepts and hides it, determined to thwart Jinzhao’s meeting with Ye Xian.

Unaware of the invitation, Jinzhao is called by Lady Han to receive three pairs of handmade, goose-down kneepads intended for the men of the family. While Jinzhao is happy to give pairs to Ji Yao and the soon-to-return Gu Jinrong, she is reluctant to do anything for her father. Lady Han advises her that regardless of his faults, maintaining a filial appearance is vital for her marriage prospects.

Jinzhao decides to head to Cunshan Academy immediately to deliver the kneepads to Ji Yao and return a borrowed book to Chen Xuanqing. At the same time, Ye Xian waits fruitlessly at the restaurant before learning that Jinzhao has gone to the academy instead. At the academy, Chen Xuanqing is occupied with a lecturer and asks Ji Yao to retrieve the book from Jinzhao. However, Ji Yao refuses, fearing his cousin's temper since she did not specifically ask for him.

They eventually send a scholar named Zhang to meet her. Just as Jinzhao hands over the book, Ye Xian arrives and mockingly accuses her of meeting a lover. He proceeds to bully Scholar Zhang, cruelly baiting him with a promise of a high-ranking position in the Marquis's household if he abandons his upcoming exams. When the desperate scholar agrees, Ye Xian reveals it was a mere joke to expose the man's "worthless" character.

The humiliation is so great that Zhang collapses, coughing up blood. The conflict escalates as Jinzhao scolds Ye Xian for his arrogance, calling him an idle noble who contributes nothing to society while others toil in the fields or study by candlelight. Enraged, Ye Xian strikes her with a whip, injuring her arm before Chen Xuanqing and Ji Yao can intervene. After Jinzhao is led away, Xuanqing finds the notes she dropped.

In them, she writes about the "stranger at home" and her humorous method of self-consolation: blaming others instead of questioning herself and eating lavishly at Linxia Zhai until her mind is too stuffed to feel sorrow. Gu Jinrong returns from the academy early, bringing gifts for his sisters. He presents Jinzhao with a jade bracelet worth five taels, privately hoping she will reciprocate with expensive antiques or paintings.

To Gu Lan, he gives a handmade ivory concentric ball, which she uses to taunt Jinzhao about the value of handmade gifts. Jinzhao, however, simply gives Jinrong the handmade kneepads. Disappointed by the lack of a valuable return gift, Jinrong complains to Gu Lan and later attempts to borrow money from her, revealing he is in undisclosed financial trouble. To appease him, Jinzhao eventually offers him some of her calligraphies and paintings.

The tension continues as Chen Xuanqing’s servant, Yunting, visits Jinzhao to invite her to celebrate his master’s birthday on the seventeenth at Yong'an Bridge. Gu Lan’s people overhear the plan and quickly report back. Meanwhile, at the Chen mansion, Old Lady Chen discusses Chen Xuanqing’s future, expressing her desire to betroth him to Yu Wanxue of the esteemed Yu family. She believes it is an excellent match and plans to exchange birth date cards after the Spring Festival.

Ye Xian’s reckless behavior finally catches up with him. After a night of heavy drinking where he nearly clashes with the Grand Secretary and Chen Yanyun at the restaurant, his mother informs him of a royal decree. The Emperor has dismissed him from his position as the Crown Prince’s study companion, using his heart condition as a public excuse. The announcement brings great shame to his father, the Marquis. To escape his father’s fury, Ye Xian is told to flee to his sister’s residence in Daxin to hide.
