Old Madam Chen expressed her desire to find a new wife for Chen Yanyun, noting that since Chen Xuanqing had already passed the imperial exams and was preparing to marry, it was high time his uncle did the same. She questioned if he was still mourning his late wife, Lady Jiang, pointing out that they had only been married for two years and he had remained a widower far too long.

Chen Yanyun deflected the suggestion, claiming he was simply too preoccupied with other matters. When his servant arrived with urgent news regarding the Gu family, Chen Yanyun used the opportunity to excuse himself. The servant informed Chen Yanyun that the Bureau of Justice had been tracking a group of southwestern bandits and had compiled a list of their associates. Surprisingly, Gu Jinzhao’s younger brother, Gu Jinrong, was on that list.

It appeared that Jinrong had been renting out private rooms in a gambling house to these outlaws, though the officials believed he was unaware of their true identities. Lord Zhang intended to act quickly to resolve the case. Concerned, Chen Yanyun sent word to Gu Jinzhao, requesting an urgent meeting. During their meeting at a restaurant, Chen Yanyun warned Gu Jinzhao about the impending raid.

Jinzhao admitted she knew of her brother’s involvement in the gambling house but had hesitated to confront him because of their mother’s illness. She vouched for Gu Jinrong’s character, insisting he was merely motivated by profit and would never knowingly conspire with bandits. Before leaving, she returned the cloak Chen Yanyun had previously lent her. She explained that she had mended the tears with gold thread, and Chen Yanyun graciously accepted the gift.

Despite Gu Jinzhao’s efforts to keep an eye on him, Gu Jinrong was soon kidnapped in broad daylight. When Gu Dezhao learned of the situation, he was consumed by rage rather than concern, fearing the public disgrace of his son’s gambling habits. He strictly forbade reporting the matter to the authorities to keep the scandal quiet. Meanwhile, the news reached Lady Han through the gossip of two servants, causing her to collapse from the shock.

Gu Jinzhao suspected that the information had been intentionally leaked to harm her mother. After Gu Jinzhao’s maid spotted Ye Xian’s guard near the place where Gu Jinrong was being held, it became clear who was responsible for the disappearance. Soon after, Li Xianhuai returned the boy to the Gu residence. However, the relief was short-lived. Gu Dezhao, having been impeached by the censors because of the gambling den scandal, ordered his son to be beaten.

When Lady Han tried to intervene, Gu Dezhao turned his anger on her, blaming the Ji family’s obsession with wealth for his son’s lack of character. Gu Jinzhao stood her ground, retorting that the household only stayed afloat thanks to her mother’s dowry and the Ji family's resources. The heated argument caused Lady Han to cough up blood.

Later, while bedridden and filled with regret, Lady Han confessed to Gu Jinzhao that she had never forgiven herself for allowing Gu Dezhao to send Jinzhao away to Tongzhou as an infant based on a superstitious prophecy. She wept, telling her daughter that this was the greatest regret of her life. Determined to confront Ye Xian, Gu Jinzhao invited him to a restaurant under the guise of a thank-you dinner, only to trap him and demand the truth.

Ye Xian admitted he had staged the kidnapping to scare Gu Jinrong into changing his ways, believing it was a favor to her. Gu Jinzhao was incensed, pointing out that his "help" had nearly killed her mother. While Ye Xian argued that the fault lay with her brother’s actions, Jinzhao was finished with his interference.

In the search for the bandit leader, Mr. Jiang discovered that the man they were looking for, Xiao Qishan, was a divine healer with a distinctive lump by his left ear. Chen Yanyun and the Bureau of Justice traced him to Xuanmiao Temple. Using the pretext of retrieving a talisman for the Crown Prince, they questioned the monks and learned that a layperson fitting the description had just fled.

During the pursuit, Chen Yanyun and his men were caught in a smoke bomb ambush. Amidst the chaos at home, Gu Jinrong left a letter of apology and ran away, prompting Gu Jinzhao to lead a search for him. While traveling through a storm, her carriage broke down, forcing her to seek shelter in a roadside hut. There, she unexpectedly found the injured Chen Yanyun, who had managed to escape the ambush but was in desperate need of medical attention.
