At a family meal, Gu Dezhao informed Gu Lan of a marriage proposal from Vice Director Mu for his eldest son, Mu Zhidi. Gu Lan was horrified and rejected the match, complaining that Mu Zhidi was as unattractive as a "pillar." Her father rebuked her sharply, stating that as a legitimate eldest son from a scholarly family, Mu Zhidi was a superior match for a concubine-born daughter.

He ordered her to stop judging by appearances, reminding her that marriage was a decision for parents to make. Gu Lan turned to Lady Han, pleading for her to intervene. Lady Han admitted she had already spoken to the Master on Gu Lan's behalf, but he had flatly refused to listen. Gu Lan reacted with bitterness, accusing Lady Han of refusing to help out of a long-standing resentment toward her mother, Lady Song.

Later, Gu Lan visited Lady Song and found her in despair. Lady Song revealed that Nanny Zhou had died almost immediately after being sent to the farm, and Lady Han had even forbidden a proper burial, ordering her body to be thrown into a mass grave. Desperate for leverage, Gu Lan recalled a secret Nanny Zhou had shared and decided to find a woman named Yuping to expose a scandal from the past.

Meanwhile, Gu Jinzhao met with Chen Yanyun to discuss her mother’s worsening situation. Frustrated by her father’s constant support for Lady Song, Jinzhao expressed a wish for her mother to seek a divorce and return to her maternal Ji family in Tongzhou. Chen Yanyun took her to his private estate near Baoxiang Temple, suggesting it was the perfect place for Lady Han to recuperate away from the household's turmoil.

Jinzhao agreed to the plan but decided to tell Lady Han that the estate belonged to a friend of her brother, Gu Jinrong, to avoid any unease. Back at the residence, Lady Song bypassed her confinement to bring Yuping before the Master. Yuping, who had served Lady Yun years ago, claimed that Lady Han used to visit Lady Yun’s kitchen frequently.

She alleged that Lady Han had switched Lady Yun’s miscarriage-prevention medicine with labor-inducing soup, causing the woman to die during a premature birth. Furious, Gu Dezhao confronted Lady Han, accusing her of murdering Lady Yun out of jealousy. He even brought up how Lady Han had once taken Jinrong away because the boy had been too close to Lady Yun.

Lady Han was stunned to realize that her husband had harbored these suspicions for years, explaining his long-standing coldness toward her. Gu Jinzhao intervened to defend her mother, demanding evidence and pointing out that Lady Song was the one who benefited most from such slander. Despite the defense, the Master left in a rage. Jinzhao later confronted Gu Lan, correctly guessing her role in finding Yuping. Gu Lan admitted it, fueled by her anger over the Mu family marriage.

She argued that Lady Han had only ever cared about Jinzhao and Jinrong’s futures while ignoring her own. Jinzhao countered by asking if Gu Lan had ever truly acted like a daughter to Lady Han in return. Seeking the truth, Lady Han visited Lady Song. During their confrontation, Lady Song revealed a painful truth: the Master had never loved Lady Han.

She claimed he only married her because he was desperate for the Ji family’s status and support, and his only true affection had been reserved for the deceased Lady Yun. Exhausted and heartbroken, Lady Han coughed up blood, later telling her nanny that the release made her chest feel lighter. Determined to end the misery, she sat down and wrote a divorce agreement.

When Gu Dezhao received the letter, he mocked her, accusing her of faking illness and using the divorce as a tactic to force an apology. He called her a "jealous woman" who wore a mask of virtue. He revealed that he had drafted his own divorce papers to cast her off many times before but had burned them only to protect their children's marriage prospects. He warned her never to mention divorce again before leaving her alone in her grief.
