Having observed Zhu Yizhen in the library's reading room for several days, Lin Nansheng found no significant breakthrough. He noted that Zhu Yizhen's borrowed books covered an unusually wide range of subjects, and she always appeared very cautious when selecting them. This led him to suspect that she might be using the books to exchange information with the Communist Party.
However, the library was an open space, frequented by many students, teachers, and staff, making it impossible to narrow down a specific suspect from this lead. Chen Moqun praised Lin Nansheng's detailed observations, emphasizing that Zhu Yizhen was a vital clue. He tasked Lin Nansheng with getting close to her and manipulating her to uncover the Mailman's contact person, all while ensuring the Mailman remained unaware.
Lin Nansheng was instructed to go undercover as an assistant professor named "Xu Liwen" at Shenjiang University. To facilitate this, Lin Nansheng faked his mother's severe illness and requested a temporary leave from Gu Shenyan. Though Gu Shenyan seemed to doubt the sincerity of Lin Nansheng’s excuse, he expressed concern, even offering to arrange transport for Lin Nansheng’s mother to Shanghai for better medical care. Lin Nansheng politely declined, explaining that travel might worsen his elderly mother's condition.
Gu Shenyan then gave him some money as a supplement, which Lin Nansheng initially refused but accepted after Gu Shenyan insisted, telling him not to stand on ceremony and to call if he needed anything else. Later that afternoon, Chen Moqun arranged a meeting with Lin Nansheng at a dance hall. Before Chen Moqun arrived, he sent a dancer, Lan Xinjie, to test Lin Nansheng’s composure and suitability for the mission.
Lan Xinjie approached Lin Nansheng, who maintained a polite but awkward distance, stating he was waiting for a friend. When a waiter informed him that Chen Moqun would be late, Lan Xinjie sat at his table, ordered dinner for both, and tried to engage him in conversation. She observed his loneliness and remarked that he was different from others in the establishment, suggesting he would only truly love Shanghai if someone he cared about was there.
When she invited him to dance, he politely declined, claiming he didn't know how. Chen Moqun then made his entrance. Lan Xinjie reported to Chen Moqun that Lin Nansheng was a sincere man with pure, clean eyes, unlike anyone she had met in a long time, but lacked experience with women. Chen Moqun found this "even better" for their purposes and dismissed her.
He then told Lin Nansheng that Lan Xinjie was intelligent because she understood how to "cut off her feelings" to prevent them from clouding her judgment. He advised Lin Nansheng to understand Shanghai's social culture, as someone of Zhu Yizhen's identity might frequent such places. Lin Nansheng affirmed his understanding, and Chen Moqun instructed him to find an undercover identity that suited his style. After completing all necessary preparations, Lin Nansheng officially began his undercover role at Shenjiang University.
He watched Zhu Yizhen display her spirited nature on the basketball court, even stepping in as a referee when the original one was injured. Later, in class, he observed her brilliantly reciting a poem from "Leaves of Grass." These initial impressions left him deeply captivated. After class, Lin Nansheng introduced himself as Xu Liwen, praising her recitation and analysis of the poem, and asked to borrow her notebook to learn more.
Zhu Yizhen, however, did not recognize him from a past encounter where he had helped her with a bag snatching incident. She remained polite but wary, limiting their interaction, and Lin Nansheng couldn't get a chance for further conversation. Zhu Yizhen proceeded to the school library, where a notice for "Madame Bovary" served as a pre-arranged signal. Following the instructions, she then headed to Zhang's Tailor Shop. Unbeknownst to her, Lin Nansheng and Xu Bin were tailing her.
Lin Nansheng waited in a car across the street, while Xu Bin informed him that Zhang's was a renowned tailor shop in Shanghai, popular among the city's wealthy ladies and young women for its master tailor. This meant Zhu Yizhen's presence there was entirely normal and didn't immediately raise suspicion. Inside the shop, a shop assistant named Fu An was seen sweeping the entrance, acting as a lookout.
Ji Zhongyuan met Zhu Yizhen in a changing room, where he explained the recent security concerns. He informed her that the library was no longer a safe meeting point and that Zhang's Tailor Shop would serve as a new contact hub. Future meetings would be arranged by instructing her to come to the shop to try on new dresses. If she needed to contact the organization, she was to wear a specific hair clip and go to the library.
Ji Zhongyuan also explained the urgent need to purchase an expensive, high-quality radio to receive orders from their superiors, a task suited to Zhu Yizhen's affluent background. She was to be responsible for transcribing these orders and then passing them to him through other channels. He emphasized the cruelty of war and the constant need for alertness and caution, warning her to observe those around her and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Meanwhile, Gu Shenyan, still suspicious about Lin Nansheng's sudden leave, contacted Ji Zhongyuan by phone. He expressed his belief that Chen Moqun, known for his paranoia, would not simply let Lin Nansheng return home, especially after the failure of the Wang Zhi operation. Gu Shenyan asked Ji Zhongyuan to send someone to Lin Nansheng’s hometown address to verify his presence. He also cautioned Ji Zhongyuan to remain vigilant, particularly regarding the female comrade they had previously discussed.
The next day, Lin Nansheng returned Zhu Yizhen's notebook and attempted to forge a deeper connection by mentioning their past encounter outside Lan Xin Theater, where he had intervened during a bag theft. Zhu Yizhen finally remembered him but remained highly alert, quickly excusing herself. Her suspicions were further piqued, leading her to discreetly inquire about "Xu Liwen" at the Chinese Language Department, only to find no record of such a tutor.
Upon learning of Zhu Yizhen's inquiries, Chen Moqun understood her heightened vigilance. He provided Lin Nansheng with a comprehensive file containing Zhu Yizhen's family background, educational history, friends, and even her favorite movies and books, instructing him to use this information to find common ground. Chen Moqun emphasized that to truly gain Zhu Yizhen's trust, Lin Nansheng needed to establish a convincing social circle for his "Xu Liwen" identity, making it feel real rather than just a cover.
Shortly after, the radio Zhu Yizhen had ordered arrived at her home. She insisted on carrying the heavy package herself, refusing her maid, Aunt Zhang's, offer to help, and quickly took it to her room. She later modified the radio with a screwdriver to ensure it could receive directives, preparing to fulfill her organization's task of acquiring intelligence for the Shanghai underground party. She also made an excuse to Aunt Zhang about a college prom that Sunday afternoon, stating she wouldn't be home for lunch, presumably to create opportunities for her clandestine activities.
