Lin Nansheng left the French Concession to confront Wang Shi'an about Lan Xinjie's dangerous mission. He pressed Wang Shi'an on when he planned to send Lan Xinjie and her child to Chongqing. Wang Shi'an, however, retorted that Chen Moqun had regained consciousness the previous night, so the mission was not complete, and there would be no arrangements for Lan Xinjie.
He blamed Lin Nansheng for interfering, which prevented Chen Moqun from dying and made him aware that the bureau was responsible. Lin Nansheng countered, reminding Wang Shi'an that he had not informed Lan Xinjie about the cyanide's toxicity and had threatened her with her child. Wang Shi'an dismissed these concerns, reiterating that Chen Moqun's execution must proceed, and only then would he commend Lan Xinjie to Chongqing.
He warned Lin Nansheng of potential retaliation from Chen Moqun due to his unauthorized actions. Meanwhile, Imai Yosuke visited Chen Moqun in the hospital. Far from offering sympathy, Imai Yosuke chided Chen Moqun for failing to prevent the assassin of General Uemura from escaping, noting that the assailant was a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Communist student movement group.
He also questioned Chen Moqun about being poisoned by a dancer, sternly reminding him that Jessfield 76 was not a place for leisure. Imai Yosuke threatened to have the Special Agent Commission make other arrangements if Chen Moqun didn't swiftly capture the "Fisherman." Understanding the severity of the threat, Chen Moqun immediately arranged for his discharge from the hospital. That same day, amidst heavy rain, Hu Daoyi led a team to apprehend Lu Youming from the telecommunications department.
Chen Moqun, after having Lu Youming tortured, tried to leverage their past camaraderie and Lu's daughter, Qi, whom he knew loved glutinous rice cakes, to extract the exact location of the Military Intelligence Bureau's Shanghai division and the Fisherman's radio. However, Lu Youming steadfastly refused to cooperate, declaring that "a noble man won't forget morality and justice even in a time of crisis," and simply requested a quick death, which Chen Moqun, respecting his integrity, granted.
After dealing with Lu Youming, Hu Daoyi reported to Chen Moqun that they had narrowed the Fisherman's radio location to within a 1500-meter radius in the French Concession. Hu Daoyi proposed a concentrated sweep of the area, but Chen Moqun dismissed it as too risky, fearing it would alert their targets. He suggested a more discreet approach: radios consume significant electricity, so they should investigate electricity consumption records.
Hu Daoyi understood and later bribed a meter reader from the Hunan France Electricity Corporation for three months' worth of electricity records for Avenue Petain and Route Andre Cohen. Separately, Wang Shi'an held an internal meeting, announcing Chongqing's new directive for the execution of Chen Moqun, code-named "Plan Fengye," which had been disseminated nationwide to all stations.
Lin Nansheng requested to lead the operation, but Wang Shi'an denied him, citing Lin Nansheng's previous failure and expressing concern that he might show mercy to Chen Moqun. Instead, Wang Shi'an assigned the mission to the Nanhui action team, whose members were new to Shanghai and had a proven track record.
Meanwhile, Zhao Jinglong reported to Lin Nansheng that Lan Xinjie and her son had been safely settled in a secluded location, and Lin Nansheng instructed for a maid to be hired for them and for Lan Xinjie to avoid going out. Zhao Jinglong also informed Lin Nansheng that, as per his instructions, they had apprehended a military policeman from the Japanese military police command.
This individual revealed that Song Li Cheng was the officer on duty the night the tip-off call about Chen Moqun was received. Lin Nansheng quickly tracked down Song Li Cheng and interrogated him. Initially hesitant, Song Li Cheng confessed under duress that the caller's voice sounded like Wang Shi'an's.
He claimed he had served as Wang Shi'an's secretary for two years and knew his voice well, promising Lin Nansheng a promotion if he reported this information to the higher authorities and spared his life. Enraged, Lin Nansheng bound Song Li Cheng and dragged him to Wang Shi'an's office for a direct confrontation. However, Song Li Cheng, terrified in Wang Shi'an's presence, recanted his statement, claiming he had made everything up.
Without hesitation, Wang Shi'an shot and killed Song Li Cheng, branding him a traitor whose words were untrustworthy. Wang Shi'an then warned Lin Nansheng to keep silent about the incident. Afterward, Lin Nansheng reflected on his impulsiveness, regretting the loss of the witness and his inability to report the matter to Chongqing. Gu Shenyan tried to console him, explaining that Chongqing would likely not have believed the testimony of a known traitor anyway, especially with "Plan Fengye" already in motion.
He urged Lin Nansheng to focus on the future and to be more cautious in his actions and words, as Wang Shi'an would not pursue the matter further with him. Lin Nansheng, however, struggled to understand why Wang Shi'an would betray a colleague when facing such a formidable enemy. The next morning, Wang Shi'an, seemingly to appease Lin Nansheng, called him into his office. He acknowledged Lin Nansheng's passion and promised to personally uncover the mole who betrayed Chen Moqun.
He then assigned Lin Nansheng a new task: to meet with the Communists again. Wang Shi'an emphasized the urgency due to more intelligence department chiefs defecting to Jessfield 76, which he believed was orchestrated by the Japanese. He instructed Lin Nansheng to be humble and sincere in their offer of 50 guns, three radios, and ten gold bars in exchange for intelligence sharing. Meanwhile, Hu Daoyi began covertly investigating businesses with high electricity consumption.
He visited Ji Zhongyuan's "Nanyuan Frame Trading" shop under the pretense of needing a name seal, observing an electric heater that seemed to be rarely used. Ji Zhongyuan sensed something suspicious about Hu Daoyi. He later cautioned Zhu Yizhen via phone call to be extra vigilant when meeting their Military Intelligence Bureau contact, as he suspected they were under surveillance.
Upon learning that Hu Daoyi had entered the shop, Chen Moqun angrily reprimanded him for "spooking the snake" and immediately began preparing for action. Ji Zhongyuan, noticing an increase in surveillance around his shop, quickly closed it, went upstairs to burn sensitive documents, and placed a different colored flower on the windowsill as a signal. Simultaneously, Zhu Yizhen met Lin Nansheng at a cafe.
Lin Nansheng mentioned seeing many French policemen near her contact point at Route Pershing, near Avenue Petain. When Zhu Yizhen saw Ji Zhongyuan's signal, she immediately realized something was wrong at her contact point and swiftly departed the cafe.
