> Resumos de THE REBEL
Lin Nansheng, disguised in a puppet army officer's uniform, returned to his lodging in the Japanese-occupied zone late at night, avoiding suspicion from patrols. Zhu Yizhen, who had been waiting anxiously, cooked noodles for him. The two shared a quiet meal, finding solace in each other's presence. Meanwhile, Wang Shi'an oversaw the final stages of Plan Gecko, receiving the detailed list of evacuees from Gu Shenyan.
He announced that the total number of evacuees was 116, and the last batch would depart the next day, marking the end of the plan. Wang Shi'an then decided to personally go to the Qingpu District contact point to rebuild and develop new forces, rejecting offers of escort as more men would make them a bigger target.
He assigned Secretary Zhang to handle communications and Section Chief Sun to protect important records, instructing them to contact the Qingpu point if anything happened. Wang Shi'an attributed their station's narrow escape from annihilation to the Japanese army's brutality, exacerbated by "Traitor Chen." He then tasked Gu Shenyan with Plan Fengye, an operation to eliminate Chen Moqun by the 18th of the month, emphasizing its critical importance and demanding its success at all costs.
As Japanese military police established a presence in the French Concession and expatriates evacuated from British and American enclaves, Shanghai plunged into fear, with artillery fire echoing nightly. Lin Nansheng slipped out to investigate and discovered that Japan had declared war on Britain and America, sinking the British HMS Peterel and moving large numbers of Japanese soldiers towards the British and American concessions. Upon learning this critical news, Zhu Yizhen felt an urgent need to contact her party organization.
Lin Nansheng advised against going out due to the widespread arrests, suggesting the information would soon be public. However, Zhu Yizhen insisted that these few hours were crucial, prompting Lin Nansheng to escort her out of the city. To avoid heavily guarded stations and checkpoints, he drove along small paths. At a puppet army checkpoint, Lin Nansheng, still in his officer's uniform, presented himself and Zhu Yizhen as a couple needing to travel to Suzhou for an urgent family matter.
When questioned by an officer about his division's supposed campaign in Anhui, Lin Nansheng quickly claimed he was recuperating in Shanghai after being shot twice during the campaign, firmly asserting he shouldn't have to provide further details. His bold demeanor convinced the officer, and they were allowed to pass into the regular zone. Lin Nansheng remarked to Zhu Yizhen that he never expected his puppet army uniform to be so useful.
Lin Nansheng dropped Zhu Yizhen off near her secret command post, reminding her that they were now in the regular zone and she should change out of her current disguise for safety. At the command post, Zhu Yizhen reported the Japanese declaration of war and the perilous situation in Shanghai, highlighting the destruction of their radio and the death of Old Ji.
She urged her superior, Chief Wei, to immediately notify the central committee, order the evacuation of concession contact points, and dispatch the Security Division to aid those still inside. Her superior praised her timely report, acknowledging that it would save many lives by allowing the central committee to grasp the rapidly changing situation.
Zhu Yizhen explained that she had been hiding with Lin Nansheng from the Military Intelligence Bureau, who saved her after Old Ji's death and helped her pass the checkpoint today. She also informed them that "Mailman," another comrade from the Military Intelligence Bureau who only contacted Old Ji, had lost contact with the organization. Believing Mailman was still alive, she requested the organization to locate him, a sentiment her superior shared.
After Zhu Yizhen completed her report, Lin Nansheng picked her up, and they returned home, both aware of the uncertain future. Meanwhile, Wang Shi'an, accompanied by two men, arrived at the Qingpu contact station, only to fall into an ambush orchestrated by Chen Moqun. The couple operating the station had already been bribed by Chen Moqun, one of them remarking on the "three thousand silver coins" they had received.
Chen Moqun had no intention of killing Wang Shi'an or seeking Japanese recognition for his capture. Instead, he wanted Wang Shi'an to facilitate his return to the Chongqing bureau. Chen Moqun openly admitted his desire to rejoin the central committee, claiming the Japanese were "crazies" who would "suffer in the future" for attacking Britain and America. Wang Shi'an, though initially unwilling, conceded that his life was more valuable than his death.
To ensure Wang Shi'an's cooperation, Chen Moqun coerced him, threatening that he would "end up like me" if he didn't help. Wang Shi'an agreed to broker Chen Moqun's reinstatement, emphasizing the need to leave no trace of his capture to avoid suspicion of disloyalty in Chongqing. Chen Moqun, now calling Wang Shi'an "Brother," declared they were "on the same boat" and that Wang Shi'an would "do anything for me." Wang Shi'an, curious about Plan Fengye, asked who would execute it.
Chen Moqun cryptically replied that Wang Shi'an "knew all of them." Chongqing's reply to Wang Shi'an's telegram soon arrived. As a "gift" and a display of his leverage, Chen Moqun handed over the Qingpu couple who had betrayed Wang Shi'an. Wang Shi'an showed them no mercy, and their desperate pleas were cut short by gunshots. In Hong Kong, the Japanese military government was established under General Takashi Sakai, and order was reportedly being restored in war-torn areas.
Meng Annan, working as a reporter, actively exposed Japanese atrocities by risking his life to take photos, which he insisted be distributed to all newspapers. He had gained the trust of pro-Communist individuals, including one who acknowledged Meng Annan's request for a meeting, confirming his successful infiltration.
Meng Annan described how he helped rescue people from a Japanese traffic stop at Shenzhen Bay by disguising them as Tanka people, whose language and customs he was familiar with from growing up by the beach. Gu Shenyan and Lin Nansheng discussed Plan Fengye.
Zhao Jinglong, who had scouted the Press Office, reported that security was exceptionally high due to senior officials of the Shanghai Municipal Pseudo-Government regularly attending newsreel screenings there, making a direct assault during a screening nearly impossible. Lin Nansheng expressed his concern about executing such a risky mission now that Shanghai was under full Japanese control and anti-Japanese forces were almost annihilated.
He argued that after the headquarters' order to evacuate for reconstruction, it was inappropriate to risk their remaining strength. Gu Shenyan, acknowledging Lin Nansheng's points, countered that with Japan having declared war on Britain and America, attacked Pearl Harbor and Nanyang, and Hong Kong fallen, the situation would only become more severe. He insisted that his plan, which involved him sneaking into the Press Office tonight, was the "only way."
He ordered Lin Nansheng and Zhao Jinglong to coordinate with him from outside tomorrow, stating he had a retreat plan and would share the details, pointing out the screening hall's street-facing wall. On his way home, Lin Nansheng purchased a butterfly brooch, along with food, necessities, and newspapers. He told the salesman the brooch was for a "very important friend," not his wife. Back home, he urged Zhu Yizhen to use the provisions and stay indoors.
When he announced he was going out that night, Zhu Yizhen sensed something was amiss. He casually mentioned that she would be leaving in a few days and reminded her to leave the key in the usual spot in the bush. Zhu Yizhen, her voice filled with apprehension, asked if he would be away for a long time.
Lin Nansheng reassured her he would return as soon as possible and asked her to go back to her room so he could deal with something. As Lin Nansheng departed, Zhu Yizhen, holding the butterfly brooch, watched him leave from the window, a mix of concern and sadness on her face. Wang Shi'an returned to a backup contact station, inquiring about any telegrams from headquarters meant for him, but none had arrived.
He also asked if Gu Shenyan and the others had gone to the Press Office to execute Plan Fengye, but his subordinate had no information as they hadn't been there since Wang Shi'an left two days prior. Wang Shi'an instructed him to stay vigilant for any headquarters telegram. Later, Gu Shenyan met with Zhao Jinglong, asking about Lin Nansheng's whereabouts and why he wasn't there for the plan.
Zhao Jinglong explained that while Lin Nansheng had initially planned for Zhao Jinglong and himself to provide external support for Gu Shenyan's infiltration the next day, he had instead sent Lin Nansheng to the Press Office on his way there, indicating Lin Nansheng had decided to infiltrate the target himself that night.
