> Resumos de THE REBEL
Following an earlier forced agreement, Lan Xinjie met with Chen Moqun. He was notably more guarded than when he served as a military intelligence station chief, making it difficult for her to get close, and their interaction remained superficial. Zhao Jinglong observed their meeting from outside and secretly photographed the entire encounter. The next morning, Wang Shui Gen urgently sought out Zhao Jinglong, informing him that the Pudong Detachment and Hunan Detachment had collectively defected to Wang's pseudo-government.
Wang Shui Gen revealed that many members who refused to betray their allegiance were brutally killed in a shootout, and he was the sole survivor who managed to escape. Shocked by the news, Zhao Jinglong immediately reported the situation to Wang Shi'an. Enraged by this sudden and significant defection, Wang Shi'an suspected Chen Moqun's involvement. He then ordered Gu Shenyan to expedite the assassination of Uemura Netto, viewing it as their only chance to salvage the Shanghai division's reputation.
Wang Shi'an also noted a recent telegram indicating strong winds, which would necessitate moving their attack point 200 meters closer, putting the operatives in extreme danger, but he insisted they had no other choice. However, Chen Moqun, leveraging his intimate knowledge of the Military Intelligence Bureau's operations, anticipated their move and set up an ambush.
The assassination team suffered heavy casualties, and had Gu Shenyan not ordered a timely retreat, Zhao Jinglong, who was part of the mission, believed none of them would have returned. Upon learning of the mission's failure and seeing a newspaper headline about the Pudong Detachment's defection, Lin Nansheng, still in confinement, angrily left his cell.
He confronted Wang Shi'an, who was discussing the mission failure with his officers, requesting permission to carry out the assassination of Uemura Netto at the upcoming celebration ceremony. Wang Shi'an initially chastised Lin Nansheng for leaving confinement and blamed him for Chen Moqun's escape, which he believed led to the Japanese knowing their plans. Despite Wang Shi'an's initial refusal, citing the celebration's extraordinary security, Lin Nansheng declared his unwavering resolve, vowing not to leave the venue alive if he failed.
Seeing this as a solemn pledge, Wang Shi'an eventually agreed to Lin Nansheng's request, promising him full credit if he succeeded. Meanwhile, Ji Zhongyuan convened with Zhu Yizhen and Wang Yunwei to finalize their own plan for Uemura Netto's assassination. He emphasized that Uemura Netto's history as a butcher, responsible for massacres, made his appearance at the Broadway Mansions celebration a "golden opportunity."
Ji Zhongyuan explained there were two infiltration methods, and only Zhu Yizhen and Wang Yunwei were suitable for the perilous mission. Ji Zhongyuan arranged to transport necessary items into the venue's kitchen under the guise of a delivery, while Wang Yunwei would blend in with the performers. Zhu Yizhen, on the other hand, would use a forged female employee pass to enter the venue as a staff member.
On the day of the celebration, Lin Nansheng and Zhao Jinglong, posing as naval officers Hao Bin and Gao Zhi Li using stolen invitations, and Zhu Yizhen, entering with a staff pass marked for "Health Inspection," infiltrated the venue, each seeking an opportunity to strike. Lin Nansheng and Zhao Jinglong had hidden their pistols in their hats to bypass security, while Zhu Yizhen retrieved her pistol from food supplies in the kitchen.
Shortly after their entry, Hu Daoyi reported to Chen Moqun that two naval officers' bodies were discovered nearby, raising suspicion about the identity thieves inside the venue. Zhu Yizhen used her "health inspection" role to access the kitchen, where she retrieved a hidden gun from the food supplies. As the celebration progressed, an announcer welcomed guests and introduced a university student choir.
After their performance, Uemura Netto, identified as a senior military adviser and deputy chief of staff, stepped onto the stage to deliver a speech. Just as Uemura Netto began addressing the attendees, Hu Daoyi spotted Lin Nansheng on the second floor and shouted his name, drawing attention to an anomaly and plunging the venue into chaos. Lin Nansheng engaged in a fierce fight with Japanese military police.
Amid the confusion, Wang Yunwei managed to shoot and kill Uemura Netto but was immediately gunned down himself. Ignoring her personal grief over Wang Yunwei's sacrifice, Zhu Yizhen prioritized saving Lin Nansheng, who was being cornered by Japanese forces. She led him to a secluded conference room, where she provided him with a change of clothes.
Inside, Lin Nansheng proposed a desperate escape plan, offering to cover Zhu Yizhen while she made her getaway, and even giving her a small gun to use for a quick end if captured, urging her to live. They then deployed a rope from the window, creating a diversion to make it appear as though they had already escaped the building.
Chen Moqun, arriving at the conference room, noted the rope hanging outside and assumed they had fled, briefly checking the cabinets before ordering a broader search of the streets. Outside the venue, Zhao Jinglong used a public telephone to inform the station that Uemura Netto was dead but Lin Nansheng might be trapped. Wang Shi'an expressed satisfaction over the mission's success but showed little concern for Lin Nansheng's fate, stating his survival depended on his own luck.
Gu Shenyan, however, was visibly worried and began devising a rescue plan overnight. Trapped in the conference room overnight, Lin Nansheng thanked Zhu Yizhen for saving his life. She responded that she did so because they were both Chinese, fighting against the Japanese. Zhu Yizhen expressed her sorrow for her young comrade Wang Yunwei, who died before turning twenty but fulfilled his mission.
She spoke of the Nanjing Massacre and the ongoing Japanese atrocities, questioning how many more sacrifices would be needed for their country's freedom and when peace would finally arrive. Lin Nansheng assured her that day would come, and Zhu Yizhen affirmed her own belief, stemming from her decision to join the Communists, that peace would eventually prevail.
By early morning, Zhu Yizhen observed that many military police had withdrawn, but the imminent arrival of office workers meant they needed to contact the outside world quickly. Gu Shenyan put his rescue plan into action, with Zhao Jinglong disguised as a rickshaw puller, driving him around the Broadway Mansions. Gu Shenyan hurled smoke grenades into the building's windows, triggering the fire alarm.
As people panicked and rushed out of the building, Lin Nansheng and Zhu Yizhen blended into the crowd and escaped. They drove away in a car Gu Shenyan had prepared, reaching the outskirts of the city before parting ways. Lin Nansheng gave Zhu Yizhen his small pistol for self-defense, while Zhu Yizhen reminded him to dispose of any incriminating items and urged him to stay alive. They both wished each other to survive and remain safe.
Upon Lin Nansheng's return to the station, he was reinstated as the captain of the operation squad by Wang Shi'an. Lin Nansheng immediately requested permission to continue the mission to execute Chen Moqun, but Wang Shi'an, while acknowledging his hatred for traitors, ordered him to rest, claiming he would handle Chen Moqun's execution himself. Gu Shenyan subtly noted that Wang Shi'an had stayed up all night awaiting Lin Nansheng's return. Lin Nansheng thanked Wang Shi'an for his consideration.
