Xiao Chengxu, leading the Wolf Battalion, vehemently rejected the idea of retreating to safety while abandoning his soldiers. He declared his refusal to be a coward and vowed to live or die with his brothers, urging them to fight their way out. Helan Mingyu was waiting for her grandfather, Helan Mingzhe, and older brother, Helan Keyong, when her horse suddenly got spooked.
She remained remarkably calm, impressing Xiao Chengrui, who remarked on her composure in the face of danger and confessed his growing admiration for her. Despite her outward calm, Helan Mingyu admitted to feeling anxious all day. Soon after, Helan Mingzhe and Helan Keyong arrived, with Helan Mingzhe expressing his delight at seeing his beautiful granddaughter.
During the banquet, Helan Mingzhe praised Xiao Chengrui's reign, acknowledging him as a capable leader who had surpassed even the late king in his ability to manage Great Sheng. Helan Yunqi then teased Mingyu about finding a good husband, but Mingyu quickly demurred, stating she had no desire to marry yet. Helan Keyong then jokingly brought up an old prophecy that declared Helan Mingyu would one day reign as a queen, which subtly piqued Xiao Chengrui's interest.
Later that night, Helan Mingyu stood alone looking at the moon, deeply missing Xiao Chengxu. Xiao Chengrui found her there and asked if she had considered choosing a husband from her many admirers. Helan Mingyu became lost in thought, remembering Xiao Chengxu's promise to return a hero and marry her. Xiao Chengrui noticed her distraction, then excused himself as Ling Zhen'er approached. Xiao Chengrui then went to Helan Yunqi's quarters, where she joyfully announced her pregnancy.
While delighted by the news, Helan Yunqi, citing her condition, suggested bringing more beautiful and well-tempered ladies from Yonglin to the harem. Xiao Chengrui, however, revealed he already had someone in mind—Helan Mingyu. He confessed his "love at first sight" for her, though he felt a sense of distance. Helan Yunqi expressed reservations, reminding him that Helan Mingyu was her young cousin.
But Xiao Chengrui was unyielding, bringing up the prophecy that Mingyu would be a queen and hinting that this potential destiny should remain within his grasp if he were to be the one to unify the Central Plains. Helan Yunqi, though hesitant, eventually conceded. Helan Yunqi then informed Helan Mingzhe of Xiao Chengrui's intentions.
Helan Mingzhe was thrilled, seeing it as an excellent opportunity to further strengthen Yonglin's ties with Great Sheng, especially given Xiao Chengrui's perceived capabilities as a future unifier of the Central Plains. Meanwhile, Helan Keyong reminisced about his adventures with Xiao Chengxu and, noticing Helan Mingyu's clear affection, told her he knew of her feelings for Xiao Chengxu, thanks to Ling Zhen'er. He then promised to speak to Helan Mingzhe and Helan Yunqi about arranging their marriage.
Helan Mingyu, however, was preoccupied with worry for Xiao Chengxu on the battlefield and for Helan Wanyin, her sister married to the hot-headed Eldest Prince of Xi Qi, especially with Great Sheng and Xi Qi now at war. Helan Mingyu later visited Xiao Chengxu's room, telling Ling Zhen'er not to tidy anything as she wanted to preserve his scent.
Ling Zhen'er, observing her sadness, cheerfully speculated that Helan Yunqi's upcoming meeting with Mingyu after dinner was to arrange her betrothal to Xiao Chengxu, advising her to finalize the marriage soon before any complications arose. Later, Helan Yunqi, with Helan Mingzhe present, formally proposed that Helan Mingyu marry Xiao Chengrui as a side consort, explaining that her pregnancy prevented her from serving the King and that Mingyu, as a fine lady, was a suitable choice.
Helan Mingzhe enthusiastically supported the idea, believing it would further deepen the ties between Yonglin and Great Sheng. Helan Mingyu was stunned and outright refused, declaring that she would rather never marry than marry Xiao Chengrui, whom she considered a respected elder. She then revealed her deep love and prior marriage agreement with Xiao Chengxu, pleading with Helan Yunqi not to separate them, as both would be devastated.
Helan Yunqi, however, confessed that the request came directly from Xiao Chengrui and warned Mingyu that rejecting him, especially for Xiao Chengxu, could exacerbate the long-standing tensions between the brothers, potentially harming both Xiao Chengxu and Xiao Chengxuan. She emphasized that the fate of the two brothers now rested on Mingyu's decision. Despite the dire warning, Helan Mingyu adamantly refused, vowing to remain with Xiao Chengxu in life and death.
At that critical moment, Ling Zhen'er interrupted, announcing that Xiao Chengxuan had returned from the front lines and was frantically demanding to see Xiao Chengrui. Helan Mingyu's heart sank, and Ling Zhen'er confirmed that Xiao Chengxuan appeared to be in great pain and kept calling out Xiao Chengxu's name, leading Mingyu to fear the worst. Xiao Chengrui questioned Xiao Chengxuan about a report from Xiao Chengyao accusing him of desertion.
Xiao Chengxuan immediately retorted that Xiao Chengyao was responsible for Xiao Chengxu's death. He then recounted how a spy's report of a Xi Qi diversion targeting Xiao Chengxu's Wolf Battalion was dismissed by Xiao Chengyao, who refused to send reinforcements and threatened military punishment. As predicted, the Wolf Battalion was ambushed and annihilated. Xiao Chengxuan, defying orders, raced to the battlefield only to find a scene of scorched earth and countless corpses, with no sign of Xiao Chengxu.
Devastated, he declared that his brother was gone and blamed Xiao Chengyao. Xiao Chengrui, though shaken, ordered an immediate, extensive search for Xiao Chengxu but also chastised Xiao Chengxuan for abandoning his post and dismissed his accusations against Xiao Chengyao as mere speculation requiring investigation. Overhearing the tragic news from outside, Helan Mingyu was plunged into deep despair.
Xiao Chengxuan, accepting the charge of desertion, swore before the golden helmet given to Xiao Chengxu by their father, Xiao Shangyuan, that he would seek justice for his fallen brother. Helan Mingyu was overcome with sorrow, unable to speak or cry initially, until Xiao Chengxuan's guard delivered Xiao Chengxu's golden helmet to her, confirming his imprisonment and vow for revenge. Holding the helmet, Mingyu recalled Xiao Chengxu's promise to return a victorious general and ask for their marriage.
Feeling betrayed by his unfulfilled promise, she was consumed by hatred and grief, wishing to cut the sachet she had made for him and expressing that her heart had gone numb. In her despair, she went to a mountain, contemplating joining Xiao Chengxu in death. Ling Zhen'er desperately intervened, pleading with her to come down and reminding her of the pain it would cause Helan Mingzhe and that she was a desired consort of Xiao Chengrui.
Mingyu argued that she couldn't face Xiao Chengxu if forced into that marriage. Ling Zhen'er then starkly warned her that if she died, Xiao Chengxuan, already imprisoned for a grave military crime, would surely face execution without anyone to intercede for him. She also implored Mingyu to stay alive to investigate the injustice of Xiao Chengxu's death. Realizing that Xiao Chengxuan's life and Xiao Chengxu's revenge now rested solely in her hands, Helan Mingyu found a reason to live.
Despite continued searches, no trace of Xiao Chengxu was found. Xiao Chengrui's investigation into Xiao Chengyao yielded consistent testimonies from his commanding generals and deputy commander, the Prince of Wei, all asserting that Xiao Chengxu's death was unrelated to Xiao Chengyao. Helan Mingyu visited the imprisoned Xiao Chengxuan, who was distraught and felt abandoned.
He accused Xiao Chengrui of not truly investigating Xiao Chengyao and suggested that Xiao Chengxu's death might have even been orchestrated under Xiao Chengrui's instruction, especially given the swiftness of his own punishment. Xiao Chengxuan angrily vowed to take revenge himself if Xiao Chengrui did not act.
Helan Mingyu, as the only person he felt he could trust, calmed him down and urged him not to cause any more trouble, reminding him that reckless actions would only play into the hands of their enemies. She promised to find a way to secure his release and, more importantly, to personally investigate the truth behind Xiao Chengxu's unjust death.
