Dong Ruoxuan expressed that disregarding His Majesty's feelings was wrong. She declared that she would follow the person she loved to the ends of the earth, sharing his feelings. The King of Xi Qi, angered by her defiance and her belittling of Xi Qi's prestige, sought out Xiao Qiyuan. Realizing her feelings for him, Xiao Qiyuan immediately went to her.
Upon seeing Dong Ruoxuan in a garden, he approached her, expressing that he understood her heart and knew she had suffered for his sake. He promised that they would never be apart again. Dong Ruoxuan wept in his arms. Later, the King of Xi Qi confronted Helan Mingyu, questioning if Great Sheng still honored the former emperor's promise to make his daughter, Situ Zhen, empress.
He demanded to know why a selection was being held instead of immediately bestowing the title. Helan Mingyu explained that after the Prince Regent's long influence, Xiao Qiyuan resisted having his life dictated. The selection was a way to save face and give him a sense of agency. She also assured the King that she had inquired about Xiao Qiyuan's feelings and he held no special affection for any of the major princesses.
Xiao Qiyuan, overjoyed by Dong Ruoxuan's reciprocated feelings, found himself unable to sleep. His attendant, Xiao Linzi, worried about potential trouble on the selection day. Xiao Qiyuan, however, refused to tell Helan Mingyu, fearing Dong Ruoxuan might be excluded from the selection entirely. He asserted his imperial authority, stating that he could not mistreat Dong Ruoxuan and intended to give her the golden headdress, making her empress.
He reasoned that if the King of Xi Qi was unsatisfied with Situ Zhen being made Imperial Noble Consort, he would meet them in battle, confident that the people of Xi Qi were tired of war and would blame their own king for any further conflict. Meanwhile, Consort Dowager Qiao visited Helan Mingyu, pleading for Xiao Qirong's marriage. She revealed that Xiao Qirong was smitten with Dong Ruoxuan, praising her gentle nature.
Helan Mingyu was put in a difficult position, admitting she had initially considered Dong Ruoxuan as a consort for Xiao Qiyuan. Consort Dowager Qiao quickly retracted her request but then lamented Xiao Qirong's supposed misfortune. On the day of the selection, five finalists were presented. When Xiao Qiyuan reached for the golden headdress, presumably to give it to Dong Ruoxuan, Helan Mingyu intervened. Seeing his apparent displeasure, she offered to make the announcement in his stead.
Helan Mingyu then declared Situ Zhen, daughter of the King of Xi Qi, as the Empress, and named Miss Xiao and Miss Chang as Consort Shu and Consort De, respectively. Xiao Qiyuan, angered, left the hall. Xiao Linzi later informed a crestfallen Xiao Qiyuan that Helan Mingyu had betrothed Dong Ruoxuan to the Seventh Prince, Xiao Qirong.
Xiao Qiyuan immediately confronted Helan Mingyu, admitting his fault and begging her to return Dong Ruoxuan to him, revealing they had promised their lives to each other. Helan Mingyu was angered to learn they had fallen in love outside the palace, having been kept in the dark about their secret relationship.
Xiao Qiyuan defended Dong Ruoxuan, explaining she was unsure of her feelings and had evaded him, only to brave her heart after being threatened by the King of Xi Qi. He implored Helan Mingyu to fulfill their wish. Helan Mingyu, however, lamented the difficult situation this created with Consort Dowager Qiao, especially since Xiao Qirong himself had expressed his desire to marry Dong Ruoxuan. She reminded Xiao Qiyuan that as Emperor, he must possess more tolerance and acceptance.
Xiao Qiyuan questioned if his happiness was to be sacrificed. Dong Ruoxuan's family was pleased with the match, believing that marrying a respected nobleman like Xiao Qirong would ensure her an honorable position as the most revered person in his manor, away from the complexities of the deep palace. Her father, the Prince of Xin An, specifically did not wish to send her into the imperial court merely to curry favor.
Dong Ruoxuan, however, was anxious after hearing that Xiao Qiyuan was locked up by Helan Mingyu, refusing to eat or drink. She realized he must have had a fierce argument with his mother and mused that perhaps their deep love was not destined enough. Helan Mingyu was also deeply troubled by Xiao Qiyuan's behavior. Ling Zhen'er suggested simply giving Dong Ruoxuan to him.
Helan Mingyu refused, explaining that she had tolerated Consort Dowager Qiao and her son for Xiao Qiyuan's sake, and feared that if Dong Ruoxuan became a consort, the harem would not be tranquil. She admitted she was forced into this difficult decision. Ling Zhen'er then asked if Helan Mingyu, after all these years, had forgotten her own love for Xiao Chengxu.
Helan Mingyu confessed that it was precisely because she knew the pain of deep love and bitter goodbyes that she did not want Xiao Qiyuan to follow her path. Helan Mingyu attempted to persuade Xiao Qirong by showing him portraits of eligible women, but he reiterated his desire to marry Dong Ruoxuan, finding her to be the most gentle and incomparable.
Soon after, Consort Dowager Qiao arrived at Helan Mingyu's residence to press the matter, prompting Helan Mingyu to feign illness to avoid her, a move that made Consort Dowager Qiao suspicious that something was truly amiss. Concerned by reports of Xiao Qiyuan's continued confinement and refusal to eat, Dong Ruoxuan wrote a letter, entrusting it to Lu Lingyi to deliver to Xiao Qiyuan.
In the letter, she conveyed that even if they were not destined to be together, she did not wish for any harm to befall him. She believed she had to make him give up on her, fearing what he might do if their attachment remained unresolved. She reflected that it would be better to abandon their love since there was no hope for it. Xiao Linzi brought Xiao Qiyuan some southern desserts.
Xiao Qiyuan, initially refusing to eat, became intrigued by the name "Smiling Spring Breeze" and a veiled reference to Dong Ruoxuan in the chef's name. When a second dessert, the "Eight Treasures Bun," was presented, he dismissed his attendants to eat it privately. There, he discovered Dong Ruoxuan's hidden note, which read, "It's over in this lifetime. Hope to be together in the next life." Heartbroken, Xiao Qiyuan questioned if even Dong Ruoxuan was abandoning him.
Xiao Linzi urged him to accept that everything was set and to stop contradicting Helan Mingyu. With no other choice, a sorrowful Xiao Qiyuan married Situ Zhen. On their wedding night, he left the nuptial wine untouched and immediately retired, leaving Situ Zhen alone and unhappy. Situ Zhen attempted to complain to Helan Mingyu about Xiao Qiyuan's neglect, but Helan Mingyu cut her short, stating that while she could force the marriage, she could not control romantic affections.
Ling Zhen'er reported that Xiao Qiyuan had refused intimacy with Situ Zhen for three days. Learning that Situ Zhen had beaten a servant girl named Rou'er, Xiao Qiyuan retaliated by summoning Rou'er to his bedchamber that very night and subsequently showered her with gifts and a private residence. Situ Zhen, infuriated, saw this as a deliberate humiliation and sent a message to Xi Qi, complaining of her suffering in the palace.
Helan Mingyu found herself increasingly frustrated by Xiao Qiyuan's willfulness and Situ Zhen's extreme reactions. She acknowledged her desire for Xiao Qiyuan's happiness but emphasized that imperial matters required reason and order. She admitted that while Great Sheng bore some fault for delaying the marriage, Situ Zhen was now being disrespectful, thinking she could disregard everyone with Xi Qi's backing.
Xiao Qirong visited Xiao Qiyuan, suggesting they go hunting to relieve stress, but also complained that Dong Ruoxuan was still sick after the selection and their marriage was postponed. He worried he might have done something inappropriate, as she refused to see imperial physicians or him. Xiao Qiyuan grew anxious, but Xiao Linzi quickly interjected, assuring him that Dong Ruoxuan, as a future Princess Consort, would surely have good fortune and health.
