Helan Mingyu was consumed by sorrow. Meanwhile, Xiao Chengrui announced his decision to generously promote and reward the soldiers who had returned from the expedition. Xiao Chengli prompted Xiao Chengyao to express his gratitude to His Majesty. Xiao Chengrui then pulled Xiao Chengyao aside, asking him to understand his difficulties, explaining that he sometimes had to be impartial.
Xiao Chengyao apologized if he had seemed too eager, and Xiao Chengrui reassured him, stating that as true brothers who had endured wars together, any past minor issues could be forgotten. Ling Zhen'er, having recently argued with Su Yuying, worried that Helan Mingyu might send her back to Yonglin. She sought help from Ge'er, who thought Ling Zhen'er deserved it for her ongoing conflicts with Princess Yuying.
Ling Zhen'er defended herself, saying Su Yuying constantly used Xiao Chengxu to trouble Helan Mingyu. Unbeknownst to them, Xiao Qihan overheard their conversation. He commented that Xiao Chengxu died on the battlefield due to his own lack of skill, and there was no point in clinging to a useless person. Ling Zhen'er sharply retorted that even a "useless person" was better than someone too scared to fight.
She pointed out that Xiao Qihan was the same age as Xiao Chengxu and would have achieved something if he had the ability, instead of lashing out at her. She concluded that Xiao Qihan was worse than Xiao Chengxu in every way. Xiao Qihan angrily vowed to achieve military merits and prove her wrong. Ling Zhen'er mockingly replied that she would be waiting to see it. Later, Ling Zhen'er expressed her frustration to Helan Mingyu about Su Yuying's hurtful words.
Helan Mingyu gently replied that since she had chosen this path, a few words from Su Yuying could not hurt her, acknowledging Ling Zhen'er as the one who understood and protected her most. She cautioned Ling Zhen'er that they could not confront Su Yuying directly, as doing so would negate all their efforts. Xiao Chengxuan came to visit Helan Yunqi, who advised him to overcome his grief for Xiao Chengxu and strive for self-improvement.
Just then, Su Yuying arrived and informed Xiao Chengxuan about the King's "double celebration": the King's consort was pregnant, and he was naming a new side concubine. She then revealed that this new concubine was none other than Helan Mingyu, who had been bestowed the title Consort Li. Stunned by the news, Xiao Chengxuan immediately rushed off.
Xiao Chengxuan found Ling Zhen'er and furiously demanded to know why Helan Mingyu had married the King, especially after Xiao Chengxu's recent death and given the King’s potential involvement in his mother's demise. Ling Zhen'er initially tried to say Helan Mingyu had "hardships" but couldn't elaborate.
Seeing Xiao Chengxuan's distress and resolve to confront Helan Mingyu, Ling Zhen'er finally revealed the truth: Helan Mingyu chose to marry the King partly to honor Xiao Chengxu and prevent his death from being in vain, and partly to save Xiao Chengxuan's life. Meanwhile, Helan Mingyu visited the secluded spot where she and Xiao Chengxu had once secretly pledged their love. She recalled Xiao Chengxu's solemn promise never to leave or abandon her.
Tearfully, she acknowledged that she was to be married tomorrow, a day she had long awaited, but the groom was not him. She felt she had no choice but to move forward, hoping one day to see Xiao Chengxu in heaven. The next day, as Helan Mingyu prepared for her wedding, a severely wounded Xiao Chengxu was frantically rushing back. He collapsed from his horse, unconscious, prompting his subordinate, Yan Hai, to seek immediate help.
Helan Mingyu, adorned in red bridal robes and crown, walked towards a marriage that felt inherently wrong, stepping into the treacherous world of the imperial harem. News soon reached Xiao Chengxuan that Yan Hai had arrived, claiming Xiao Chengxu was still alive. Overjoyed, Xiao Chengxuan rushed to the outskirts of the city, where he found his brother covered in blood. In his unconscious state, Xiao Chengxu repeatedly murmured Helan Mingyu's name.
At the wedding banquet, Xiao Chengrui was in high spirits. Su Yuying rose to toast him and began to recount a story about a beautiful woman from Yonglin who, after her lover's death in battle, swiftly married a rich and powerful man. Helan Yunqi tried to interject, but Su Yuying insisted that the King himself would decide the story's ending.
As she was about to reveal that the woman in the story was Helan Mingyu, the auspicious hour for the wedding ceremony arrived. Simultaneously, a messenger burst in to report that Xiao Chengxu had returned. Xiao Chengrui, along with Xiao Chengli, immediately went to see Xiao Chengxu. Su Yuying attempted to follow, but Helan Yunqi stopped her.
Yan Hai explained to Xiao Chengxuan the harrowing details of Xiao Chengxu's survival: he had fallen off a cliff and was buried under a pile of corpses, only to be found after days of searching. They had to evade Xiqi soldiers and endured immense hardship on their journey back. Yan Hai believed that it was solely the thought of Helan Mingyu that kept Xiao Chengxu alive. Hearing this, Xiao Chengxuan clenched his fist in anger.
Xiao Chengrui and Xiao Chengli soon arrived to visit the injured Xiao Chengxu. Xiao Chengxuan expressed his concern about his brother's grave condition. Xiao Chengrui reassured him that now that Xiao Chengxu was back, he would ensure no further harm came to him. He ordered the imperial physician to use all necessary palace medicines to aid Xiao Chengxu's recovery, emphasizing his desire for his brother to regain his health.
Meanwhile, Helan Keyong discreetly informed Ling Zhen'er that Xiao Chengxu was alive. Ling Zhen'er excitedly rushed to tell Helan Mingyu, who wept tears of joy upon hearing the news. Overwhelmed, Helan Mingyu declared her intent to see him immediately, but Helan Keyong and Ling Zhen'er desperately tried to stop her. They warned her that on her wedding day with the King, any attempt to meet another man would lead to unimaginable consequences.
Helan Mingyu was resolute, stating that she had believed she would live her life like a walking corpse, but Xiao Chengxu's return signified hope, a second chance. She believed this was a divine opportunity, and if she went to him, they still had a future together. If not, their lives would be ruined. Seeing her determination, Ling Zhen'er vowed to protect Helan Mingyu as she went to see Xiao Chengxu.
However, Helan Yunqi arrived and intercepted them, urging Helan Mingyu to come inside. Xiao Chengxu awoke, and Xiao Chengrui personally fed him ginseng soup. Inside, Helan Mingyu pleaded with Helan Yunqi, arguing that since her marriage ceremony with the King was not yet complete, there was still hope for her and Xiao Chengxu. She was willing to confess everything to the King and accept any punishment. Helan Yunqi became angry, questioning if Helan Mingyu was trivializing the King's reputation.
Helan Mingyu declared that even if the King ordered her and Xiao Chengxu killed, they would choose to die together. At Xiao Chengxu's bedside, Xiao Chengli highlighted Xiao Chengrui's deep affection, pointing out that the King had abandoned his own wedding celebration to rush to Xiao Chengxu's side. Helan Yunqi fiercely reminded Mingyu that she had married the King to save Xiao Chengxuan and their homeland, Yonglin.
She cited historical examples of countries being destroyed for similar slights, asking if Helan Mingyu would watch Yonglin be annihilated for her actions. She also brought up the prophecy of Helan Mingyu becoming a Queen and warned that if she left with Xiao Chengxu, the King would never let him go. Helan Yunqi emphasized Empress Mu’s dying wish for her sons' well-being and cautioned that the Empress would not forgive her for such a betrayal. Helan Mingyu visibly weakened.
Helan Yunqi reminded her that once she had agreed to marry the King, there was no turning back. She suggested that perhaps their separation was fate, signifying that she and Xiao Chengxu were not destined to be together. She urged Helan Mingyu to consider the many lives dependent on her decision, acknowledging that life often required sacrifice.
After Xiao Chengrui and Xiao Chengli departed, Xiao Chengxuan told Xiao Chengxu that he had moved to Xiao Chengli's side courtyard and brought him there. Xiao Chengxu, worried about Helan Mingyu's anxiety, asked Xiao Chengxuan to inform her that he was safe. Xiao Chengxuan, carefully concealing the truth of the wedding, simply told him to focus on recovery and that Helan Mingyu likely couldn't leave the palace easily that day, suggesting they could meet once he was fully healed.
Xiao Chengxu seemed reassured. Back in her room, Helan Mingyu wiped away her tears. Helan Yunqi entered, thanking her on behalf of Yonglin. Helan Mingyu, looking at her wedding attire, finally accepted that she had to go through with the marriage, understanding she could not abandon her people.
