Following Chen Hui’s instructions, Gao Songge sought out the vengeful Huo Kaiming, claiming she had finally found the person he was looking for. She directed him to meet Chen Hui at the Shiguang Photo Studio at one o'clock that afternoon. At the studio, Hui and Songge staged a happy couple’s photo shoot to establish an alibi. The photographer, pleased with their look, offered a discount on the condition that he could display their portraits in his shop window.
While the shoot was concluding, Songge slipped away to Huo Kaiming’s house to plant cough syrup bottles under his bed, further incriminated him. Meanwhile, Chen Hui led Huo Kaiming away, claiming he would help identify the target, Jiao Yuqin. Sensing her son was missing, Ding Yue began to worry. Hui led Huo Kaiming deep into the remote outskirts. As the road ended, Huo grew suspicious and threatened to burn Hui alive if he was being deceived.
Seizing the opportunity, Hui made a staged phone call to his father’s colleague, Limin, shouting that Huo Kaiming was demanding the release of the lottery shop owner, Cai Jie, or he would be killed. Shortly after, a violent struggle and a staged car crash occurred, intended to frame Huo for attempted murder. In the aftermath, Chen Hui remained in a "coma" to divert police attention.
He realized that framing Huo Kaiming as the kingpin of the Peidun cough syrup trade was a tactical error, as the police would eventually realize Huo lacked the necessary resources. To maintain his innocence while supposedly incapacitated, Hui secretly instructed Songge to continue shipping the illicit goods by swapping the contents of legitimate soda and liquor shipments with the cough syrup.
At the skating rink, Songge paid a delivery driver, Mr. Hu, to watch over the "unconscious" Hui for half an hour, using both guilt and extra cash to ensure his cooperation. At the police station, Captain Liu Na prepared to return to the municipal bureau as the investigation into the lottery shop seemed to be concluding. She informed the team that Yu Susu—the woman who had conned Huo Kaiming—had been captured in Yunchuan and was being extradited.
However, Chen Hongbing discovered a new lead while examining the evidence. He noticed a peculiar, colorful rainbow shimmer on the rims of the new cough syrup bottles that was absent from those found at the lottery shop. This rainbow glow felt hauntingly familiar to him, though he couldn't yet place it. Meanwhile, Cai Jie’s daughter, Xin Yu, decided to sell the lottery shop to save money for her mother, who was facing a life sentence.
Feeling she could no longer stay in Fengyang, she resolved to move to Beijing to pursue her singing dreams. On her final night at the skating rink, Songge paid her a full month’s salary and a bonus as an investment in her future. With a final performance of "Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies," Xin Yu bid a tearful farewell to her life in Fengyang. The investigation took a dark turn when Chen Hongbing witnessed a man collapse near the Electronics Mall.
The man had suffered a seizure and hallucinations after drinking a soda he hadn't paid for. Reports of similar incidents soon flooded in. A technician named Tang eventually identified the mysterious crystals on the "glowing" bottles as polyacrylamide, a substance used for water purification at water treatment plants. This suggested the distribution network was not only active but had evolved. Exhausted by the case, Chen Hongbing returned home to find his son still seemingly unresponsive.
While trying to feed him, Hongbing accidentally scalded Hui’s hand with hot porridge. Overwhelmed with guilt and the stress of the case, Hongbing apologized to his son, confessing that he regretted ever suspecting him of being involved in the crime. Seeing his father’s hair turning white from the strain, Chen Hui could no longer maintain his ruse. He gripped his father’s hand and spoke for the first time, calling him "Dad." The family was overjoyed by the "miraculous" recovery.
The following day, Huang Liang was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for illegal mining. Hongbing attended the trial and later met with Liu Na, insisting on merging the current investigation with the 20-year-old cold case involving the death of Gao Ying. He noted that the method of burning the body was identical and pointed out that Huo Kaiming had been the safety officer on duty during the fire that killed Gao Ying.
He felt he needed to resolve the case for himself and his wife, who had been Gao Ying’s best friend. Medical tests showed that the blood clot in Hui’s brain had shrunk, and he was cleared to return home. Outside the hospital, Songge asked why he had chosen to "recover" so suddenly. Hui admitted that while he wasn't afraid of men like Huo Kaiming, he could never win against his father and couldn't bear to see him suffer any longer.
Upon returning home, Hui teased his grandfather by pretending not to recognize him before laughing it off. That evening, the family gathered for a celebratory dinner. However, amidst the toasts, Hongbing suddenly looked at his son and asked exactly what Huo Kaiming had said to him on the day of the accident. The question caught Chen Hui completely off guard, leaving him in a cold sweat.
